In this gritty guide, we challenge you to overhaul your strategy, placing the audience’s preferences at the core. It’s a clear call: disrupt your own models or be side-lined by those who will. For those daring to adapt, the future is bright; for the rest, irrelevance awaits.

Also returning to the BANFF stage in June is the Rockie Awards International Program Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious screen industry competitions, with participation from more than 45+ countries annually including an international jury of 150 industry professionals. Industry veterans Michelle Mama and Bill Taylor launch new production company Gay Agenda

From a media release:

Industry veterans and award-winning producers Michelle Mama and Bill Taylor today announced the launch of their boutique production company GAY AGENDA. With an aim to foster, mentor, and produce from a defiantly queer lens, and to discover and amplify the next generation of queer voices, the company is currently in various stages of development and production on a robust slate of feature films and scripted and factual TV and digital series. Production is currently underway throughout Canada and the U.S on the feature-length documentary AntiDiva: The Confessions of Carole Pope.

“Everything just clicked when I met Bill and I knew we could build something meaningful together. We share the same vision, work ethic, and commitment to giving back to the community,” said Michelle Mama. “We’re passionate about empowering talented queer creatives who have been misunderstood by the mainstream, and about depicting representations of queer people not in peril, grief, or living through tragedy – we’re in the business of creating and sharing queer joy.”

“Forming GAY AGENDA at a time when the world feels increasingly divisive, it’s important for us to tell our own stories that foster empathy, build bridges, and celebrate forgiveness and redemption,” said Bill Taylor.

Featuring interviews with music industry titans, making use of never-before-seen archival footage, and with exclusive access to Carole Pope today, AntiDiva: The Confessions of Carole Pope chronicles the fascinating career and current life of a queer maverick. Challenging mainstream notions about sex and sexuality with her band Rough Trade in a time when it was dangerous to be gay, the now 78-year-old icon is navigating a new chapter of her life – still gigging, working on a musical, and recording fresh new music with young artists in her thrall. Produced by Michelle Mama, Bill Taylor, and Allison Grace of Fall From Grace Productions, and written and directed by Michelle Mama, AntiDiva: The Confessions of Carole Pope is slated for release in 2025 on CBC Documentary Channel.

AntiDiva: The Confessions of Carole Pope was made possible with the support of the Canada Media Fund POV Program, the Ontario Creates Film Fund, the Hot Docs-Slaight Family Fund, and the Rogers Documentary Fund.

Additionally, GAY AGENDA is currently in various stages of development on the following projects:

  • That’s Just Super (8×30) – queer superhero series created by Julianna Notten (Erin’s Guide to Kissing Girls) and co-showrun by veteran writer Anthony Q. Farrell (The Office, Shelved)
  • Queer Elders (working title, 6×30) – documentary series directed by Maya Bastian (Farm Crime, Tigress)
  • Daygamers (8×30) – adult animated series created by Lester Trips (Content Farm)
  • My Fabulous Gay Orgasm (6×30) – comedic series created by Scott Jones
  • Change Your Life Forever in 60 Days (6×16) – comedy web series created and produced by Ink Cap Productions
  • 2 x formatted queer dating series – additional details to be released at a later date

MICHELLE MAMA is an award-winning, five-time Canadian Screen Award nominee who has been producing and directing in the factual and doc space for over two decades. Her most recent credits include executive producing doc feature Summer Qamp (TIFF ’23) Canada’s Drag Race Season 3 and “Canada vs. The World” (Crave), directing the trans makeover series Shine True (VICE), and show-running two seasons of the award-winning arts documentary series In The Making (CBC). Michelle most recently directed celebrated comic Mae Martin hosting of a special episode of The Nature of Things “Fluid: Beyond the Binary” (CBC) and had the pleasure of directing two 2024 Governor General Award films, produced by the National Film Board, honouring comedy icon Andrea Martin and puppeteering legend Ronnie Burkett.

BILL TAYLOR is an award-winning queer filmmaker who is committed to telling stories deeply rooted in the human condition. He began his career as a writer/director making several films that screened at festivals worldwide, including Silver Road (CBC, Iris Prize Nominee, MTV Logo), The Young Prime Minister (Bravo!), and Don’t Get Killed In Alaska. After directing, producing and writing his first feature, Bill turned his attention to television production, working on hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted shows.

Drew and Jonathan Scott’s Backed By The Bros premieres June 5 on HGTV Canada

From a media release:

Home renovation and real estate superstars Drew and Jonathan Scott will put their professional reputation, connections and resources on the line to help struggling property investors find success in the new HGTV Canada series Backed By The Bros. Premiering Wednesday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada and available to stream the same day and time on STACKTV, the 10-episode season will show another side of the Brothers – proven real estate moguls who know a good investment when they see one – as they relinquish total control of renovations to advise bewildered entrepreneurs, short-term rental owners and residential developers on high-stakes investment properties. To get each project across the finish line in an unforgiving housing market, the popular twins will back investors with their professional expertise, experience, invaluable insights, and top-notch resources – gratis.

In every episode of Backed By The Bros, Drew and Jonathan will consider two potential real estate investments. After assessing the properties and meeting the owners, they will decide who to back with their full suite of support. Offering their expert mentorship, project management capabilities, trusted trade contacts, a team of designers and a warehouse full of construction materials, furniture and décor, Drew and Jonathan will bring every resource to the table. The Brothers are ready to help the investors avoid pitfalls, but there’s no guarantee they will listen. Protégés may push back or go rogue, but if they make the right decisions, they’ll get the best return on their investment.

In the season premiere, Drew and Jonathan will review a troubled renovation project in North Hollywood that’s already more than $100,000 in the hole, as well as a detached garage in Burbank that the owners hope to transform into a rental unit. While only one will receive the backing opportunity, the other will still reap the benefits of the Brothers’ consultation and invaluable advice.

Backed By The Bros is produced by Scott Brothers Entertainment with Drew and Jonathan serving as executive producers.

Brian Scudamore is Canada’s newest investor on CBC’s Dragon’s Den

From a media release:

CBC today announced that 1-800-GOT-JUNK? founder and CEO Brian Scudamore will join DRAGONS’ DEN for Season 19. The visionary behind one of Canada’s most recognizable brands and the world’s largest junk removal company, Scudamore enters the Den ready to infuse the entrepreneurial landscape with his wealth of expertise and experience. Fans of Dragons’ Den can stream seasons 6 through 18 on the free CBC Gem streaming service.

A high school dropout, at 18 years old Scudamore ventured into the world of business – buying a $700 pickup truck to start a one-man junk removal service in Vancouver. Fast forward thirty-five years, and today that business has become a global success with 174 franchises across Canada, the US and Australia. Scudamore didn’t stop there, expanding his franchise business model into painting and home detailing, launching WOW 1 DAY PAINTING and Shack Shine under the umbrella company O2E Brands, which has been named one of Newsweek’s Most Loved Workplaces. Together, Brian’s portfolio of companies has given hundreds of aspiring entrepreneurs the chance to turn their business dreams into reality.

“I’m excited to be joining the team of Dragons on this iconic show that has impacted so many people,” said Scudamore. “I’ve been a huge fan of the show since the beginning and so I’m excited to play even a small role in an iconic show that helps inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs in Canada!”

“With Brian Scudamore taking a seat on the panel this year, the show gains not only a seasoned, well-known entrepreneur, but also a mentor committed to nurturing the country’s next generation of great innovators,” said Jennifer Dettman, Executive Director, Unscripted Content, CBC. “His presence enriches the Den’s dynamic, offering invaluable expertise and inspiration to Canadian audiences and aspiring entrepreneurs.”

As an advocate for up-and-coming talent, Scudamore has contributed as a board member for the Young Entrepreneurs Organization (YEO) and authored two best-selling books on entrepreneurship: “WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success” and “BYOB: Build Your Own Business, Be Your Own Boss.” His achievements also include receiving the Fortune Small Business’ Best Bosses Award and the prestigious Best Company to Work For award, which he has won three times. He has been honoured in The Globe and Mail’s Top 40 Under 40 list and recognized by the International Franchise Association as an Entrepreneur of the Year.

Scudamore joins Arlene Dickinson, Wes Hall, Manjit Minhas and Michele Romanow, as Robert Herjavec and Vincenzo Guzzo depart the Den.

Herjavec was one of the original Dragons back in 2006. After departing the series for a decade, he returned for two seasons, coinciding with his family’s move back to Canada. While he is a staunch supporter of Canadian entrepreneurs, his business priorities have him stepping back from doing more television.

“As I reflect on my return to Dragons’ Den, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to champion Canadian entrepreneurship,” says Herjavec. “I’ll forever cherish the experience shared and the connections made, and I’m excited to see the continued impact of the Den on future entrepreneurs.”

Guzzo’s departure from the series marks the end of an incredible six season run, characterized by his unique blend of entrepreneurial insight and captivating charisma. Moving forward, he will be focusing on his children and businesses, as he prepares for the next generation of Guzzos to take on the world.

“I am truly grateful for the incredible six-year journey on Dragons’ Den, and extend my thanks to my fellow Dragons, amazing entrepreneurs, and the viewers who made this experience unforgettable,” said Guzzo. “A parting thought: if they tell you it’s impossible, make sure to prove them wrong. It’s the fuel you need to keep going when you are thinking of giving up. Keep dreaming, innovating and making things happen!”

Production on Season 19 of DRAGONS’ DEN’s will begin later this spring at CBC in Toronto. Molly Middleton and Amy Bourne are Senior Producers.
