Upcoming series: Bathroom Divas: So You Want to be an Opera Star?, Bravo, Feb. 10

From Bravo:

The Curtain Rises for Season Two of Bravo!’s Bathroom Divas: So You Want to be an Opera Star?

Airs Saturdays at 9pm ET / 6pm PT, beginning February 10 (Encore presentations Tuesdays at 8pm ET / 5pm PT)

Canadian singing hopefuls from all walks of life transform themselves from singing in the shower to performing opera on stage in the second season of Bathroom Divas: So You Want To Be An Opera Star?, an exciting six-part, one-hour documentary series produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment for Bravo!. After a cross-country search for raw operatic talent, six finalists are hand-picked to participate in an extensive opera boot camp and one of the protégés ultimately wins the title of “Bathroom Diva.” After an overwhelmingly successful first season, the series returns to Bravo! February 10 and airs every Saturday at 9pm ET / 6pm PT, with encore presentations every Tuesday at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.

After a call for submissions, judges Mary Lou Fallis (soprano professor/comedienne), Tom Diamond (opera director/drama coach), Daniel Lichti (bass-baritone/professor) and Liz Upchurch (pianist/vocal coach) travel to Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax to audition hundreds of opera-star wannabes. The judges encounter singers with varied backgrounds; an orthopedic surgeon, a landscape gardener, a lobbyist, a beef and pork trader, a CEO of an advertising firm and a fashion designer. One candidate is so nervous that she has to lie down on the stage before performing, while another auditionee breaks down and cries at the end of his audition. One opera hopeful even claims to channel spirits when she sings. From this country’s deep talent pool, six finalists are selected to take part in an extensive three-week opera boot camp in Toronto.

The six finalists are revealed in the season premiere and a finalist is eliminated in each subsequent episode. The second season culminates with one singer selected as the winner and awarded the ultimate prize – a debut performance at the Orpheum Theatre with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra led by esteemed conductor Bramwell Tovey in front of an audience of thousands.

Bathroom Divas is more than just a singing competition; it’s an intimate look at the successes and failures of these opera hopefuls. The finalists get a rare opportunity to work with opera’s best, receiving coaching and singing lessons for 12 hours each week, as well as fencing, dancing, movement, Alexander Technique and etiquette classes from the coaches. And as a part of their training, the six contenders perform in front of a panel of expert high-profile guests that include Gage Averill, Jean Stilwell, Mary Morrison, Peter Tiefenbach, Luc Robert, Carrol Anne Curry, Yves Abel, Catherine Robbin and Measha Brueggergosman. For an aspiring opera singer, this exposure is priceless.

“This season of Bathroom Divas is even better than the last,” says vocal coach and producer, Mary Lou Fallis. “The quality of the singing is higher and on a show like this you can’t hide much. At the beginning the singers’ stress and confusion is obvious. But as always there is someone who, by a sheer act of will, emerges the winner, applying all the attention and care they have been given. That struggle is exciting to watch and let me tell you – it’s great to be in the business of making dreams come true.”

  3. When will Season 3 start? I am not an opera fan, but find this series fascinating, with something new to learn every time I watch it.

Unfortunately, the final episode of Season 2 is not coming though on Bravo
on February 10/07. This is at least my third time of watching the series, and I watched the first one at least twice.
