18 to Life shocking to US critics

From Jaime Weinman of Maclean’s Magazine:

  • 18 To Life Shocks the U.S. Critics
“That’s part of the point of the show: the characters make a decision that has more impact, legally and culturally, than any other, and one that their parents fear will ruin their lives. Both sides, then, would view 18 To Life as an invitation to irresponsible behaviour, so it opens itself up to twice the complaints a teen show would normally get.” Read more.

  1. Wow. Fascinating.

Interesting that no one’s mentioned the lovely review of the show in VARIETY, which, interestingly for a trade paper, appears to have risen above the xenophobia inherent in most of the American reviews:

    Dear Americans,

I hate to break this to you, but we Canadians took over your entertainment industry a LONG time ago. Glenn Ford, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Pam Anderson, Jason Priestly, Michael Cera, Ellen Page, Hart Hanson (creator of BONES), Rene Balcer (showrunner on pretty much all the LAW AND ORDER shows, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Cameron, Dan Ackroyd, Ivan Reitman (director, GHOSTBUSTERS), Jason Reitman (director, UP IN THE AIR), Will Arnett, Linwood Boomer (creator of MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE), Nathan Filion, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Lorne Michaels (creator, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE), Howie Mandel, Cory Monteith (GLEE), half the casts of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and STARGATE, Sarah Polley, Kiefer Sutherland, Alanis Morrisette, Avril Lavigne, Michael Buble, Paul Haggis (director, CRASH) – any of these names sound familiar?

Deal with it – and grow up.
