First airing on the CBC in 1996 (where it would run, on and off, until 2005), The Newsroom borrowed its cues from vérité-influenced sitcoms like HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show and Channel 4’s Drop The Dead Donkey. Set behind the scenes of a nightly news program at a network modeled after (and shot live at) the CBC, The Newsroom stood out. (Though we’d be lousy historians if we didn’t note that the show-within-a-show conceit distinctly recalls SCTV.) Read more.
