1.36 Million Viewers Watch Meaghan Become CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL on CTV

• Season Finale up 31% compared to season average
• Full-season marathon airs this Saturday on Star!

Last night, 1.36 million viewers* (*total viewers 2+ at 8:58 p.m., BBM Nielsen Media Research) were watching CTV as Meaghan Waller, 19 from Winnipeg, became the last model standing and took home the title of CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, preliminary data from BBM Nielsen Media Research confirms. More than two million viewers watched all or part of the broadcast and with an average audience of 957,000 viewers, the season finale was the most-watched episode of the season, up 31% compared to the season-to-date average. Winning its timeslot at 8 p.m. in total viewers and the key A18-34, A18-49 and A25-54 demos, the episode was the most-watched program on Canadian television last night for A25-54 and the key female demos F18-49 and F25-54. Additionally, CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL was also the #1 reality show of the night, delivering more viewers than a simulcast of BIG BROTHER on Global (943,000).

Encore presentations of last night’s finale air on Star! and FashionTelevisionChannel, tonight at 9 p.m. ET; on MTV, tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET; and Sunday, July 19 on ‘A’ at 10 p.m. ET. Following her spectacular journey on the show, Meaghan is immediately being thrust into the forefront of the fashion world. Now represented by world-renowned modelling agency Elmer Olsen Models, this week is chock-full for Meaghan with a FASHION Magazine editorial spread, Elmer’s Boot Camp to Big Time – where she’ll meet with international agencies – and a promotional shoot for Capezio Shoes. And of course, Meaghan will be the face of Cover Girl campaigns across the country as she is the proud new owner of a $100,000 beauty contract from P&G Beauty.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at final judging on CTV’s CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. After weeks of challenges, trips, and photos shoots, Meaghan, 19 from Winnipeg, outlasted 11 eliminations to become the last model standing and win the title of CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. Host Jay Manuel and the judges, FASHIONTELEVISION’s Jeanne Beker, supermodel Yasmin Warsame, Montreal native and A-List photographer Mike Ruiz, and photo shoot Creative Director Nolé Marin, all agreed she had what it takes to win the competition and become Canada’s next model sensation. “Every emotion is pouring through my veins right now,” Meaghan said immediately after being named Canada’s Next Top Model. “I want to travel. I want to do as many photo shoots around the world as possible. I want to make it all happen. It is official – Meaghan Waller is a model.”

Although immensely talented in her own right, Linsay from Edmonton was edged out of the #1 spot. While the judges said she’s stunning and takes great photos, they didn’t think that she had enough international appeal. The judges maintained that Meaghan’s look is current, she had fantastic photos throughout the competition, and had a spectacular presence at the final fashion show.

Here’s a quick recap of how three became one: The top three girls had a try at a FASHION Magazine cover try where they all produced gorgeous photos. But when it came time for three to become two, the judges grew tired of Nikita’s self-deprecating attitude and sent her back to Calgary. The final two, Meaghan and Linsay, stomped it out in a fierce fashion show for designers The Blonds in their final challenge. The judges agonized over their final choice, but in the end, meek Meaghan rose above and took the title of CTV’s Canada Next Top Model.

• Modelling competition fails to produce a real winner
  “Even by the standard of TV talent contests, those overhyped and tearful exercises in humiliation and jubilation, Top Model is pretty nasty. The American show on which this franchise is based has been widely criticized both for humiliating its contestants with painful critiques and skimpy costumes, and for the bitchy behaviour of the young women themselves. The Canadian show is also full of bathing suits and underwear, but the judges generally know how to criticize without demolishing: Host Jay Manuel sets the tone here, and while he may look like an alien from the planet Aryan, he is a cheerful sort who is pleasant with all comers. It’s the women themselves who were behaving like vindictive school girls last week in an incident that had embarrassing undertones of racism.” Read more.

It all comes down to this. The top three dive into a high-stakes cover-try photo shoot for Fashion Magazine. The best two advance and continue to compete – and the worst goes home in a mid-show elimination. The final two models then enter the final challenge of the competition – a walk-off in a heel-to-heel runway fashion show. In the end, only one will be named CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL.

Maryam Moves On and it’s Down to the Top Three on CTV’s CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL

After a challenging week of drama, ripped dresses, tears, and bickering, Maryam was cut loose on tonight’s CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL on CTV, leaving the top three competitors to model-it-out in next week’s season finale. The journey has been difficult for Maryam who struggled with a language barrier and passport issues throughout the competition. And while she was disappointed not to be CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, she wasn’t devastated and she’s not giving up. “I really wanted to win this, but I also really wanted to have the experience too,” Maryam said on her departure. “It’s not like this was the only way that I could go. I have a scholarship; my average was ‘A’ in school. I guess I’m going to go back to school and I’ll send my portfolio to the agency and see what happens.”

Now, it’s Alberta vs. Manitoba as Linsay (Edmonton, AB), Nikita (Calgary, AB), and Meaghan (Winnipeg, MB) vie for the title of CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL in the Season Three Finale, premiering Tuesday, July 14 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV (visit www.CTV.ca to confirm local listings).

On tonight’s episode, the Top 4 had to nail a Cover Girl photo shoot under the watchful and critical eyes of Nolé Marin and Mike Ruiz. Then Top Model icon Miss J. provided some much needed advice for walking the catwalk. The girls immediately took those lessons into the next challenge as they were wrapped in Cashmere Bathroom Tissue and tasked with strutting a tricky tabletop obstacle course. Unfortunately, the ultra-fragile garments needed dexterity and delicacy and one dress was badly ripped; first by Maryam and then by Linsay. In the end, it was Maryam who moved out of the penthouse.

In next week’s CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL season finale, the Top 3 dive into a high-stakes cover-try photo shoot for Fashion Magazine. The third-place finalist is sent home in a mid-show elimination. The final challenge of the competition is a fashion show walk-off. It’s a high fashion pressure cooker as the competitors hit the runway with the industry elite in the audience. At the final judging ceremony, the panel struggles to find a winner in the most heart-wrenching decision to date. In the end, only one oozes “total package” and becomes – CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL.
