Minister Joly Announces New Leadership at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, is pleased to announce the appointments of Ian Scott as Chairperson and Caroline J. Simard as Vice-Chairperson (Broadcasting) of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). These appointments are the result of the Government of Canada’s open, transparent and merit-based selection process for Governor in Council appointments.

Mr. Ian Scott has over 25 years’ experience in the broadcasting and telecommunications industries and in the public sector. Most recently Executive Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Telesat Canada, Mr. Scott has held a variety of senior executive roles in the telecommunications and broadcasting industries. Past executive positions include Vice President of Federal Government Relations for Telus, and executive positions in both government and regulatory matters at Call-Net Enterprises and with the Canadian Cable Television Association. In addition to his work in the private sector, Mr. Scott has significant experience in the public sector at both the Federal Competition Bureau and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. He was educated at McGill University.

Dr. Caroline Simard, PhD in law (McGill) and member of the Barreau du Québec, has extensive expertise in telecommunications and broadcasting regulation. She is currently Legal Counsel within the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, a position she has held since 2007, where she has worked on the Telecommunications Act and the Radiocommunication Act. From 2004 to 2007, Ms. Simard was Senior Telecommunications Expert with the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Switzerland, which is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communications technologies. She had previously held positions with the Centre d’études sur l’intégration et la mondialisation (CÉIM) at Université du Québec à Montréal, Verrier Pacquin Hébert Consultants Inc., Téléglobe Inc. and others. Ms. Simard was educated at McGill University, Université du Québec à Montréal, and Université de Montréal.

Mr. Scott will serve as Chairperson for a five-year term, beginning on September 5, 2017. Ms. Simard will also serve for a term of five years, effective as of September 11, 2017.

In addition to these two appointments, Christianne M. Laizner has been appointed to serve as Interim Vice-Chairperson (Telecommunications), for a term of up to one year. Ms. Laizner, whose appointment is effective as of July 17, 2017, joined the CRTC in 2010 as General Counsel, Telecommunications, and since 2013, has held the position of Senior General Counsel and Executive Director of the CRTC Legal Sector. She has held senior-level positions in other federal departments for many years. Before joining the public service, Ms. Laizner was a partner in the Chown Cairns law firm in St. Catharines, Ontario. Ms. Laizner was called to the Ontario Bar in 1982, and holds an LLB from Western University and a B.A. (Hons) from McGill University.

  • The CRTC’s senior roles are Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson (Broadcasting) and Vice-Chairperson (Telecommunications). These are full-time positions appointed by the Governor in Council.
  • A selection process for the position of Vice-Chairperson (Telecommunications) will be launched in the near future.

CBC’s new original talk show The Filmmakers celebrates great Canadian films

CBC today announced a new 11-part original talk show launching as a companion to a special Saturday night line-up of celebrated Canadian films. Hosted by journalist Johanna Schneller and featuring candid studio conversations with some of the creative talent behind many of Canada’s greatest films, THE FILMMAKERS launches this Saturday, July 22 at 8:30 p.m. (9 NT). Each half-hour episode centres on one film that will air immediately after the talk show, debuting with Atom Egoyan’s THE SWEET HEREAFTER – the first of 11 Canadian features airing Saturday nights on CBC (full schedule and broadcast times below).

THE FILMMAKERS taps into how some of Canada’s most significant films were made and why we need to watch them, through lively and surprising conversations with a diverse mix of creators, directors and artists including: Xavier Dolan, Sarah Polley, Director X, Atom Egoyan, Mina Shum, Kim Nguyen, Don McKellar, Deepa Mehta, Zacharias Kunuk and Jennifer Baichwal, as well as guest panelists Connor Jessup, David Suzuki, Stephanie Morgenstern, Cameron Bailey, Sook-Yin Lee, Edward Burtynsky, Cazhhmere and Academy Award-winner Sylvain Bellemare.

Rick Campanelli, Erin Cebula and Natasha Gargiulo leave ET Canada

Sad news out the Entertainment Tonight Canada camp today, as it’s been announced Rick Campanelli, Erin Cebula and Natasha Gargiulo are all leaving the long-running newsmagazine show.

“Heading into our 13th season of ET Canada, we are making some changes to the show,” the series announced via its website on Friday. “It’s an emotional day as we share the news that Rick Campanelli, Erin Cebula and Natasha Gargiulo will be moving on to pursue new ventures. After 12 years as co-host, Rick will be leaving ET Canada when his contract comes to a close later this summer. We are grateful for his dedication to the show and wish him well.”

“Following 12 years as our West Coast reporter, Erin is moving on to produce and host quality lifestyle and entertainment content for broadcast and new media in Vancouver,” the post continues. “And after 12 years as our correspondent in Montreal, Natasha Gargiulo will continue host and produce entertainment shows for TV and radio, and expand her lifestyle retreats to empower women. You can still catch Natasha and Erin on the show throughout the month of July, and Rick will appear until the end of August.”

“We sincerely thank Rick, Erin and Natasha for their tremendous contributions to ET Canada, and wish them every success in their future endeavours,” it concludes.

Launched in 2005 as a spinoff to Entertainment Tonight, ET Canada‘s current roster includes Cheryl Hickey, Roz Weston and Sangita Patel.

This is just the latest shakeup at a former Shaw property since Corus bought the company in 2016. Timber Kings, You Gotta Eat Here!, Income Property, Big Brother Canada, Leave It to Bryan and Real Housewives of Toronto have all be cancelled by Corus this year.

CBC announces hosts and judges for The Great Canadian Baking Show

CBC today announced the team of hosts and judges for THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW (8×60), the public broadcaster’s homegrown take on hit format The Great British Bake Off. The series will be hosted by actor and writer Daniel Levy (Schitt’s Creek, The Hills: The After Show) and actor Julia Chan (Saving Hope, A Kid Like Jake), who will keep the judges buttered up and bakers laughing even when the going gets tough. Judging which competitors measure up are acclaimed pastry chefs Bruno Feldeisen, former executive pastry chef for the Four Seasons in New York and Vancouver and a multiple James Beard Award nominee; and Rochelle Adonis, the Quebec-raised, European-trained creator of a flagship tea shop and confectionary brand in Australia. Produced by Proper Television, THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW starts filming in Toronto this week following a nationwide search for Canada’s top amateur bakers, and will premiere Wednesday, November 1 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC.

Based on the beloved British format, THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW brings together 10 amateur bakers from across the country to compete in a series of themed culinary challenges as they celebrate their diverse backgrounds, families and communities. Each episode will feature three rounds including the Signature Bake, the Technical Bake and the Show Stopper. After the bakes are tasted and critiqued, the judges will decide who will become the week’s Star Baker and who will be sent home. The final three bakers will compete for the Great Canadian Baking Show title.

THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW is presented with Robin Hood. The Robin Hood Baking Family consists of a portfolio of leading baking brands.

While waiting for the Canadian series, CBC audiences can whet their appetite with the most recent season of the British series (Season 7), which will air as THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW starting Wednesday, August 23 at 8 p.m. ET (8:30 NT) on CBC. Season 6 is available to stream now at cbc.ca/watch.

THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW is produced by Proper Television in association with CBC and Love Productions. The executive producer is Cathie James, and the series producer is Marike Emery. The format is owned by Love Productions and distributed by Sky Vision. In addition to the original British series, the format has been produced in 23 territories including America, Australia, France and Ireland.
