Vice and Bell Media join forces for innovative new partnership in Canada

Bell Media and VICE Media announced today a new, long-term, far-reaching agreement that delivers the best of VICE programming, original VICE productions, and a new media sales relationship.

The arrangement sees Bell Media become the exclusive Canadian broadcast home to new original programming from VICE’s U.S. linear network, VICELAND, along with hundreds of hours of library VICE programming, all debuting on multiple Bell Media platforms, including CraveTV, in the fall of 2018.

New VICE programming such as the upcoming THE HUNT FOR THE TRUMP TAPES WITH TOM ARNOLD and MUNCHIES GUIDE TO will exclusively air on television on Bell Media channels. Bell Media has also acquired the TV, digital, and SVOD rights to more than 650 hours of VICE library programming, including the Emmy®-nominated GAYCATION, WHAT WOULD DIPLO DO? starring James Van Der Beek, MOST EXPENSIVEST starring Grammy Award-winner 2 Chainz, SLUTEVER, F*CK THAT’S DELICIOUS with Action Bronson, VICE GUIDE TO FILM, MY HOUSE, KING OF THE ROAD, HAMILTON’S PHARMACOPEIA, and ABANDONED.

Both companies will also explore co-production opportunities for Bell Media platforms in Canada and VICE platforms around the world. It was announced today that The Movie Network (TMN) has commissioned the sequel to the acclaimed VICE documentary DOPESICK, entitled DOPESICK2: THE FUTURE OF ADDICTION.

The two companies will also utilize their respective expertise by forming an advertising sales relationship that will see VICE and Bell Media combine their capabilities to bring innovative, multi-platform solutions to clients.

VICE programming will also be available on the upcoming CTV Super Hub and in a VICE-branded collection on CraveTV. SnackableTV, Bell Media’s new short-form video app, will become home to VICE videos like SMOKE SHOW and TEENAGE EXORCISTS.

Bell Media has previously showcased VICE programming on HBO Canada, including the Emmy-winning documentary series VICE (Fridays at midnight ET) and Emmy-winning weeknight series VICE NEWS TONIGHT (Monday-Thursday at midnight ET). VICE special reports like A WORLD IN DISSARAY are available on HBO Canada On Demand.

When Stephen McNeil’s government closed the books on the 2017-2018 fiscal year last month, it marked the official end of Nova Scotia’s film tax credit.

The final $5.3-million payout shows up as a single line item on page 297 of a 349-page document issued by the Finance Department, called Volume 3, Supplementary Information.

It’s not the Hollywood ending envisioned by Finance Minister Bernie Boudreau when the Liberal government of John Savage introduced the credit in its 1995 budget. Continue reading.

Coming this fall on APTN

APTN announced its Fall 2018 schedule today, highlighting a slate of new original series, returning favourites and thought-provoking documentaries. The new season starts on September 3rd.

Longmire, Season 5 – Sheriff Longmire finds himself caught in the cross-hairs of a wrongful death civil suit. New mysteries and cases are weighing down on Walt and his team.

Wentworth, Season 6 – Following season five’s jaw-dropping finale. Season six resumes with almost all of Wentworth’s inmates and officers stunned by the apparent joint escape of Franky Doyle and Joan Ferguson.

First Contact – Premiering on APTN, First Contact takes a group of six non-Indigenous Canadians with strong opinions and immerses them into Indigenous Canada for the first time. The participants are tested in extraordinary situations, their beliefs confronted, and their emotions pushed to the limits.

Taken, Season 3 – The hard-hitting, true crime documentary series, focuses on solving the mysteries behind Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Broadcasted in Cree and English. APTN will be co-broadcasting the third season of Taken with CBC.

Future History – Exclusive to APTN, this documentary series challenges the settler colonial paradigm while celebrating the reclamation and revitalization of Indigenous knowledge.

French language programming will also premiere on Canada’s only independent Indigenous network. Première Ligne captures the stories of Indigenous health and first aid professionals who help their fellow community members in distress. The hit documentary series, defining the standards of beauty within an Indigenous context, Princesses will be airing in French.

New Indigenous language Programming will also air on the network. From the North, Nunavummi Mamarijavut, an Arctic adventure culinary series follows Inuit families and outfitters and showcases how food is an expression of love and a means of sharing their culture. Broadcast in Inuktitut. Moosemeat & Marmalade, Season 3 will air in Cree and Mohawk Girls, Season 5 will air in Mohawk.

B.C. production sector and Netflix unveil new initiative for local screenwriters

Today organizations and leaders from across BC’s media production sector announced the launch of the Pacific Screenwriting Program. The Program is billed as an intensive training ground that will provide support and career-advancement opportunities for active and aspiring screenwriters from across BC. The initiative is the result of generous support from Netflix, Creative BC, and the Canadian Media Producers Association, as well as strategic guidance from the Writers Guild of Canada.

Launching today alongside the Pacific Screenwriting Program is its flagship training initiative, the Scripted Series Lab. Beginning in January 2019, the full-time professional development opportunity will train up to six BC-based, entry-level writers, helping them to hone their craft, strengthen their collaboration and presentation skills, and obtain a deeper understanding of the global scripted content industry. Applications for the Scripted Series Lab are now being accepted. An info night is being held on August 8th. For more information check www.pacificscreenwriting.com.

The Scripted Series Lab is the Program’s first training course, combining real-world story-room experience with one-on-one mentorship to equip writers with the skills, experience, and connections necessary to build a successful screenwriting career.
