HGTV Canada’s superstars team to create the ultimate Home to Win

Superstars assemble! Take 20 HGTV Canada contractors and designers, drop them onto a property in dire need of renovation and what do you get? Home to Win, the network’s biggest giveaway ever, and a showcase for homegrown talent.

Hosted by ET Canada‘s Sangita Patel and debuting Sunday at 10 p.m. ET, Home to Win is a who’s who of demolition and design talent, including Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, Sarah Richardson, Scott McGillivray, Mike Holmes, Tiffany Pratt, Samantha Pynn, Paul Lafrance, Kate Campbell, Sebastian Clovis and Danielle Bryk. Basically, if they appear on an HGTV Canada series, they’re participating in Home to Win. It’s a smart move: it’s all hands on deck in the first episode as the participants search Canada for the ideal property to make over. But can so many artistic people with differing style ideas all get along?

“Bryan and I had a lot of questions,” Baeumler says during a press junket at Corus headquarters alongside Pratt and Pynn. “How do we get these 20 people together, align the schedule, make sure we all work well together … it just seemed like a huge feat. It took about an hour of thinking about it, and Bryan said, ‘This will work.'” It certainly does. It’s easy to assume these folks all get together on a regular basis to quaff and beer and talk shop, but that’s not the case. With busy production and business schedules to juggle, pros like Pynn and Lafrance would never have met and collaborated, let alone be featured in a series together.

“We all have our own different areas of expertise,” Pratt explains. “We all have our different arenas, so for all of us to come together and put it into one space, it’s really spectacular. It’s good times with everybody.” Unlike many renovation shows, there are no firm deadlines and no winner or loser. The group is working together over 10 episodes to create a beautiful space full of, as Baeumler says, stories, memories and connections.

“I knew that it would be a lot of fun,” Pynn says. “I knew there would be a lot of work, but it doesn’t feel like work. And the end reveal is just everything. It was an amazing experience.”

At the end of that experience, one Canadian will win the home and all of the furnishings. Auditions are open now and couldn’t be more simple: after giving the standard name and address information, you must record a one-minute video telling the casting team, “What makes a house a home?” Three contestants chosen will compete in Home to Win‘s finale.

“You have 20 people repeating the words ‘dream home,’ so you can’t not have a dream home, period,” Pratt says. “Everyone here and at home want to tune into that final episode and say, ‘Holy … Oh my God!'”

OMG. I would love to enter my husband in this challenge. He is a farmer but I call him my jack-of-all-trades. I don’t know what heart palpitating challenges you will give him, but I’m sure my heart will be palpitating watching him do these challenges. Please consider him as a contestant. (P.S. – We love to watch HGTV.) —Joan

Murdoch Mysteries‘ showrunner explains heartbreaking episode

Maria, when did you start watching the show? Julia cannot have children, due to a past and painful abortion. My only solution would be for the Murdoch’s to have a surrogate; but, that was the early 1900. No surrogate then? I believe before the season finale, they will have a child. We now know that they are open to adoption, so anything now is possible and acceptable with Julia and William. —Joanne

Joanne, thank you so much for clarification. I watched all the seasons (not in order though) and most certainly I missed that information. One episode, however, sunk in my memory and made me think that it is possible for them to have a child. This was when Det. Murdoch went to the so called “Future Showing” show and got somewhat hypnotized inside the machine. In this episode, he could foresee his future (10 to 12 years from the present time) with Julia and (must be) their son. This story made me think that it is possible for them to have a son, maybe even an adopted one. But it really doesn’t look like anymore. How sad. —Maria

We arguably did have a Downton Abbey. It was the 90s period drama Road to Avonlea, a Canadian story set in Canada with a large ensemble of great characters with great writing and great acting. It got great ratings on both sides of the border and it holds up rather well today, unlike many shows which become corny with time. That being said, its been a couple decades since the show ended and Emily of New Moon failed to live up to its predecessor. I wish we could get something else; none of the networks really seem to embrace the idea. —Alicia

You think it is respectful disrespecting a B-25 bomber war grave on your show? Rooting through it like vultures; you should be slapped for your ignorance of the men that lost their lives and their families. I believe that is a protected war grave and I hope you are reprimanded. —Bill

20 Stars, 20 Room Renovations: Home to Win debuts April 24 on HGTV

This April, HGTV Canada launches Home to Win – its biggest, most interactive, multiplatform series yet. For the first time in the network’s history, 20 HGTV Canada stars including Mike Holmes, Bryan Baeumler, Scott McGillivray and Sarah Richardson come together under one roof to buy an average home and renovate it from top to bottom for one lucky Canadian. Starting today, Canadians can visit HomeToWin.ca to audition to be one of three Canadians who will compete to win this ultimate property. Throughout the series the house is revealed on-air and online, with HomeToWin.ca hosting a closer look after every episode. Hosted by ET Canada’s Sangita Patel, Home to Win premieres April 24 at 10pm ET/PT on HGTV Canada.

In the series premiere, HGTV Canada stars hunt for the ideal property to buy and renovate for one Canadian to call their own. In each episode, fan-favourite builders and designers work together to renovate and revamp the home room-by-room. With 20 major renovations to complete, there’s no shortage of work for this powerhouse cast and the results are extraordinary. Once the house is complete, three Canadians compete in heart-pounding challenges to see who will be victorious and claim the keys to the house.

By visiting HomeToWin.ca, Canadians can now submit an audition video for the chance to compete for the ultimate home, which will be awarded during the Home to Win finale on June 26. To participate in casting, Canadians must enter their email address on the site by June 5 at 11:59pm ET and follow the directions emailed to their inbox. The application is as easy as submitting a video, up to one minute in length, introducing themselves and answering the question, “what makes a house a home?”

Leading up to series launch, HomeToWin.ca transforms into a fully immersive digital experience where fans can explore design content, photo galleries and the interactive Design a Room feature. The Design a Room tool puts the audience in the driver’s seat as they design six different rooms inspired by the Home to Win house. Throughout the series, as the house is renovated on-air, Canadians get an in-depth look at every stunning detail through a captivating virtual tour with hotspots allowing them to shop the look. Canadians also get a taste of life on set through behind-the-scenes videos and can watch full episodes after they air.
