Village on a Diet puts spotlight on Taylor, BC

From CAssandra Szklarski of the Canadian Press:

  • Tiny town of Taylor, B.C., battles big weight problem on ‘Village on a Diet
“When Dr. Ali Zentner arrived in the small town of Taylor, B.C., she found a big problem. A big fat problem. More than 60 per cent of the oil-and-gas town’s roughly 1,300 residents were considered obese — twice the national average. The community’s grocery store was a gas station. Kids were so overweight, Zentner says, that the school had to order adult-sized T-shirts — large and extra-large — for its students.” Read more.

From Erin McPhee of North Shore News:

  • Heavy stuff
“It wouldn’t be easy, but that didn’t prevent the residents of Taylor, B.C. from teaming up to lose a ton of collective weight in a mere three-month period. Their incredible journey, seeing them come together as a community and put their health first — learning how to eat well and exercise — was captured by Vancouver television production company Force Four Entertainment and the resulting 10-part series, Village on a Diet, will premiere Monday, Jan. 3 at 9 p.m. on CBC Television.” Read more.

TV, eh? podcast episode 21: CanCon Yule Logs

Episode 21: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony and Diane start with a tribute to the amazing career of Leslie Nielsen. Then it’s a recap CBC’s revised winter schedule, which moves Republic of Doyle out of the way of the World Junior Hockey Championships but not 18 to Life, Little Mosque on the Prairie, or Village on a Diet. CBC’s holiday specials include many of their scripted shows but their PR as usual conspicuously avoids mention of 22 Minutes, who have been pumping out newsworthy and well-watched episodes lately. We mock the holiday schedule of CTV for being more a collection of stuff they’re throwing on the air.

Anthony rants about MuchMusic’s thwarted desire to play homeopathic levels of music videos, and also about the comparatively high cost of content in Canada. Diane pretends to listen, as usual.
