Loving those Mohawk Girls

I’ve really liked this show from the beginning. The characters all seem real and relatable and the writing is actually fairly good at times with several truly funny moments, which is saying a lot because there are so many unfunny comedies on TV right now. There are a few rough spots in the writing and acting but I think that’s just because they are giving less experienced writers/actors a chance to learn/grow which is a good thing. —Alicia

Hating Bachelor Drew

I could not stand Drew and the possibility of him being on The Bachelor Canada would repel me from watching the show. How could you possibly even contemplate such a thought? He is self-centred, egotistical and a real douche. Since Day 1, when he was introduced and kept winking at the camera I have had a hate-on for the guy. Who does he think he is, he is such a jerk. If Mike (firefighter, paramedic) does not get chosen by Jasmine I think he would make a great Bachelor Canada. —Irene

The only way ratings will go down is NOT due to Drew’s departure…it will be because she let Thomas go….Drew is so full of himself!!!! —H

Who would want to see any more shows with this fake person on it? I cannot even believe that offer would be made to a person who acts like him, particularly his obnoxious performance when he was eliminated. Nobody wants to watch THE DREW show, except maybe DREW. Just an all around bad human being. At least the show will warn people off him and not allow the fake salesman into their lives. —Bev

Bachelorette Canada preps for hometown visits with tearjerker in Morocco

In the last week before hometown dates, the final five bachelors laid it all on the line for Jasmine as The Bachelorette Canada heads toward the finish line.

Kevin P. didn’t waste any time on his first-ever one-on-one date with Jasmine in Morocco, ironically discussing the rocky relationship he has with his mother after the pair successfully climbed a rock face. After hearing Drew’s patter for six weeks, it was refreshing to listen to Kevin and Jasmine be brutally honest with each other and come to the same conclusion: he wasn’t for her. Where Kevin wants to live a transient lifestyle full of excitement, Jasmine is ready to settle down and I totally respected both of them for talking so openly on primetime television.

Host Noah Cappe got some major screen time in Tuesday’s episode as he met with Jasmine to discover where her head was at prior to the group date with Mike, Mikhel and Benoit. Jasmine had already experienced a stunning one-on-one with Kevin W. that included milking cows, making bread and Kevin looking like Aladdin on steroids and cemented their strong feelings for each other. By the time she was done chatting with Noah, Jasmine had made her decision: she nixed the market group date in favour of meeting with each one on one to ask more questions before the roses were handed out.

Of the three conversations, Benoit’s was a bit stilted. That was, in part, due to Mike showing up but also because, for the first time, Benoit got serious with Jasmine about his feelings. They managed to get some more alone time, and it was then Benoit dropped the funny guy routine and told Jasmine he wasn’t willing to reveal his family to her unless she was really serious about them being a couple. Jasmine decided she didn’t want to jeopardize that and Benoit was sent back to La belle province.

Shocker: The Bachelorette Canada eliminates a contender

And just like that, one of the early favourites to win Jasmine’s heart has been eliminated from the competition. Yup, the man known as Sexual Tongue on Night 1 of The Bachelorette Canada—a.k.a. Thomas—got the short end of the stick at the closing of a dreaded two-on-one date with Mike. Thomas’ only crime was having a gypsy lifestyle full of international modelling gigs and Jasmine couldn’t figure out where she fit with that.

Instead, the rose went to Mike, who offers a more stable life for Jasmine and something she’s craving. I was sad to see Thomas go; not only was he a good-looking dude with a sense of humour, but he had a thought in his head too. But I was happy Mike remained and has a real chance of being around until the end.

Meanwhile, the next Bachelor Canada could very well be Drew. After not receiving a rose at the cocktail party, he went on an expletive-filled rant, calling Jasmine an idiot and vowing the show’s ratings will tank once he’s gone. He did, however, express interest in starring in The Bachelor Canada.

Frankly, the rest of Tuesday’s episode in Marrakesh, Morocco, was a bit of an emotional let-down. Benoit, the frenetic Frenchman, had his first-ever one-on-one date with Jasmine and was given a rose, but that wasn’t a surprise, really. Jasmine has liked him from Day 1 and her only worry going into tonight was whether or not Benoit had any concrete plans for the future. Once he assured her he was in for the long haul, she handed him the coveted flower.

Of course, no episode of The Bachelorette Canada would be complete without Drew acting up and he didn’t disappoint. The V.P. of sales boasted about the attention being on the program would get him and that it will lead to business deals. He also opined he’d like to score some acting gigs. Ug.

A rainy day tea date wth Drew, Kevin W., Mikhel and Kevin P. went well enough and they learned how to do the tall pour. Kevin W. reacted badly to sharing Jasmine with the others and Drew spent a lot of his time with her … talking about himself. When Kevin W. did get some one-on-one time with Jasmine, he admitted she was the only thing worth sticking around for. By the time the tea had gone cold, Jasmine had handed a rose to Mikhel.

The rose ceremony was a flurry activity, with Drew stealing Jasmine away immediately … to talk about himself. Kevin P. used his time wisely, lowering some emotional walls and collecting his first smooch of the season. Kevin W. hates cocktail parties almost as much as group dates and made that known before complaining Mikhel was given a rose instead of him. It was very interesting to see Jasmine put Kevin W. in his place and explain he wasn’t any more special than the other guys.

By the time the dust had settled Kevin P. and Kevin W. got the final two roses, bringing Drew’s reign of terror to an end. I only wish had stuck around long enough to see it.

The Bachelorette Canada crushes hearts in Quebec

With just eight guys left on The Bachelorette Canada, Jasmine’s job is getting tougher. And, with Quebec City as the backdrop, she got a lot closer to her final decision.

As the episode began, Chris announced to producers that he wasn’t going to focus on his differences with Drew, but his connection with Jasmine. Smart move, considering Chris isn’t vying for Drew’s affections.

But it was Mike—and his eight-pack abs—who landed the first one-on-one date of the episode, with the two taking to the skies in a helicopter. (I’m hoping Mikhel gets a helicopter date so he can show off his skills.) The fact he’s a firefighter scored Mike points, and their connection over parental loss did too. The in-sky smooches sealed it, and he nabbed the first rose of the night, though the fact he’s not able to relocate—at this point, anyway—could cause some problems.

As for the first group date, Mikhel, Chris, Kevin P. and Thomas donned plaid lumberjack shirts and headed outside to hammer nails and chop and carry logs around in the woods. It was a physical date designed to spotlight prowess and determination, and some did better than others. Thomas (speaking in third person, no less) and Chris started off strong, but Chris faltered in the end and the former construction worker turned international model was tops in the competition. Not only did he get free time with Jasmine in a horse and carriage but they discussed the differences between Tom and Thomas, and what they do to get freaky. Kudos to Thomas for letting his guard down and singing—into a Two Oceans wine bottle—to Jasmine because he was rewarded a rose for it.

Second group date was reserved for Benoit, Kevin W. and Drew. Drew announced he was playing it coy with Jasmine, with fingers crossed she’d be intrigued by his mystery and seek him out. Speaking of fingers, everyone’s got a workout at a spa where massages and other spa treatments were doled out. The hook? Jasmine was blindfolded and had to guess who was touching her. Drew went first, running his oily fingers all over Jasmine, and that upset Kevin W. quite a bit. Benoit and his vibrating things performed a sensual manicure, and upset Kevin W. too. When it was his turn, Kevin W. took control of the pedicure and got Jasmine all hot and bothered. Jasmine successfully guessed who had performed what and, after fending off Benoit’s tongue, got serious with Drew and talked dogs, outside fireplaces, apple trees and his mom. Kevin W., meanwhile, was surprised by the jealousy he was feeling and showed it by giving Jasmine a bit of a cold shoulder. He was rewarded by … Drew receiving a rose.

After a surprisingly low-key episode compared to last week’s fireworks, Jasmine doled out the remaining roses to Mikhel, Kevin W., Benoit and Kevin P. Unfortunately, despite wanting to focus on Jasmine, she wasn’t interested in Chris, his lyrics … or kissing him. That led to the most awkward moment of the season, Chris’ demise, and a tearful exit.

“Just another broken dream,” he said, wiping away tears.

The Age of Abundant Consultation

The CRTC heard what consumers wanted; they simply ignored what consumers were saying. The CRTC proved once more that it walks in the shadow of the regulated industries. The “BIG BOYS” dictated the terms and conditions of their “surrender” to consumer demands for a skinny cable package. The CRTC dutifully responded by making these the terms and conditions of their package. It did not take long for consumers to realize that after all of the CRTC’s hype about choice, they had been had. Once more, the CRTC proved to the public that they are not a credible regulatory agency who will place the interest of consumers above those of the “BIG BOYS.” J.P. Blais is largely responsible for this outcome. —Eamon

Chris was respectful and asked Jasmine if she wanted the hear the goods on Johnny (Drew). If she wanted to just keep on going blindly and make her own decisions she should not have said yes. Maybe I don’t think like the rest of them, but it took guts from a guy who never really had any one-on-one time with her to let her know not to be fooled by a rat who’s in it for the game or the win while Chris himself seems more to have her best interests at heart not wanting to see her heart crushed by a player. I lost respect for the bunch of them. —Lori
