In the news: Fans don’t heed Canadian Idol producer’s rant

Bill Brioux of the Canadian Press dissects the aftermath of Idol producer John Brunton chiding fans for eliminating Toronto contestants:

  • ‘Idol’ producer fed up with T.O.
“Brunton’s complaint flies in the face of the first law of television: the audience is always right. It also exposes “Canadian Idol” to a more troubling – if not exactly shocking – charge: even the producers see the show as more of a regional popularity contest than a true talent search.”

In the news: The Week the Women Went, and more

John Doyle of the Globe and Mail talks to producer David Paperny:

  • Meet a pragmatist whose success mirrors B.C.’s
“Right now, Paperny and his partners, Audrey Mehler and Cal Shumiatcher, are preoccupied with The Week the Women Went, a reality series to air on CBC in early 2008. The premise, which originated with the BBC, has all the women leaving a small town for a week, forcing the local men to cope with everything their wives or partners might normally perform. Paperny got the call to make the series for CBC and chose the small Alberta town of Hardisty, population 743. The filming was done in June and, according to Paperny, the show is both bizarre and entertaining. ‘I think this is the sort of populist programming that CBC wants to do right now. And I think it will be a hit. The footage of the women – they went to Canmore to enjoy themselves – is utterly fascinating.'”

In the news: Canadian Idol results

From CTV.ca:

  • Judges’ picks line up with votes in Top 18 elimination
“Both Sass Jordan and Zack Werner forsaw the departure of rock goddess Naomi-Joy Blackhall and Toronto belter Scarlett Burke when asked at the beginning of the show which women they would send home. When asked which male singers would be on their way, judges Jake Gold and Farley Flex both named B.C. crooner Clifton Murray, but missed the mark when they chose Halifax rocker Dwight d’Eon – who landed in the bottom four, but did receive few enough votes to be eliminated. Also ending his Canadian Idol run was Sarnia singer-songwriter Andrew Austin, who wowed the judges during this week’s performance (the first-ever where a competitor on the show accompanied themselves with an instrument) but landed in the bottom four for the second week in a row.”

From CanWest News Service:

From Leah Collins of the Victoria Times Colonist:

  • Victoria teen stays in Idol hunt
“Clifton Murray, originally of Port McNeill, was given the heave-ho on last night’s episode of Canadian Idol, along with three other contestants. This makes Victoria 17-year-old Liam Styles Chang the Island’s only Idol.”

From Tina Comeau of the Yarmouth Vanguard:

  • Dwight d’Eon survives another week on Canadian Idol
“D’Eon is one of two Nova Scotians left in the competition. Like d’Eon Tyler Mullendore of Cape Breton will be among the Top 7 males to perform Monday night. Naomi-Joy Blackhall of Halifax was one of the two girls voted off during this week’s results show. Also voted off the show this week were Scarlett Burke, Clifton Murray and Andrew Austin.”

From Teresa Latchford of Yorkregion.com:

  • Woodbridge Idol hopeful advances
“Mila Miller from Woodbridge was among the bottom three female competitors but earned enough votes from Canadian views to return for next week’s round.”
