Motive, Blood and Water and This Life top Leo Award nominees

CTV’s Motive, Omni’s Blood and Water and CBC’s This Life are among the top vote-getters for the upcoming Leo Awards. The program salutes television and film projects filming in British Columbia.

Motive is up for several awards, including Best Program, Direction, Screenwriting for Dennis Heaton, Sarah Dodd and Julie Puckrin, and Lead Performance Female for star Kristin Lehman. Blood and Water is nominated for Supporting Performance Male for BC Lee and Supporting Performance Female for Elfina Luk. This Life gets the nod in Screenwriting for Rachel Langer and Supporting Performance Female for Lauren Lee Smith.

In the Music, Comedy or Variety Program or Series, Letterkenny receives three nominations for Program and Performance, Kim’s Convenience for Screenwriting and Performance, Crash Gallery for Program and The Beaverton for Performance.

The winners will be announced during a three-day event and gala in Vancouver on May 27 and June 3 and 4.

Wynonna Earp, Letterkenny and X Company top WGC Screenwriting Awards

Writers for Wynonna Earp, Letterkenny, X Company and Degrassi: Next Class were among the winners at the 21st Annual Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards in Toronto on Monday night.

The event, held at the Telus Centre for Performance and Learning’s Koerner Hall, celebrated the country’s screenwriting talent in television and film. Wynonna Earp writer Alexandra Zarowny (pictured above) won Best Script from a Rookie Series for her Season 1 script “Bury Me With My Guns On,” and thanked her fellow writers and fans for their support.

“There is an entire writing room behind this award,” she said. “This goes to James Hurst, Brendan Yorke, Caitlyn D. Fryers and Emily Andras. I love you, Em, and as the last five years have shown, I’ll follow you anywhere. And to all our social media fans, Wynonna Earp is the little engine that could and I’m so proud of this little demon-hunting show and the LGBTQ community was a huge, fierce, loud and proud part of that. They got a second season made.”

Letterkenny‘s Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney won the TV Comedy for their Season 1 script, “Super Soft Birthday,” while X Company‘s Stephanie Morgenstern and Mark Ellis took home a trophy for the Season 2 episode, “August 19th.”

Comedian and writer Laurie Elliott hosted, getting the night off on the right foot. “To all the writers in the room, look at us in our outside clothes!” she began. “This is a fancy party to celebrate writers.”

Andrew Wreggitt was the recipient of The Denis McGrath Award for his service to the Writers Guild of Canada, Aaron Martin was given the Showrunner Award, Diana Frances the Sondra Kelly Award and Daniel Whidden the Jim Burt Screenwriting Prize.

Murdoch Mysteries, Letterkenny and Tatiana Maslany win big at Canadian Screen Awards gala

Murdoch Mysteries, Letterkenny, Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany and Kim’s Convenience‘s Paul Sun-Hyung Lee were among the winners at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards gala on Sunday night at Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Murdoch Mysteries executive producer Christina Jennings made the fans’ night by revealing Season 11 has been ordered by CBC.

“The writing room started last week,” Jennings said in the media room following the show’s Golden Screen Award for highest-rated drama or comedy. “We’ve got 20 episodes, and that takes us to 170 hours of television.”

Host Howie Mandel kicked off the night with a funny skit where he inserted himself into nominees Vikings, Kim’s Convenience, Schitt’s Creek and Race. And, instead of asking the celebrities who they’re wearing, Mandel grabbed a camera guy and asked about his jeans and t-shirt.

The Academy Icon Award was delivered to Just for Laughs; comedian Dave Chapelle was there to deliver the statue to JFL founder Gilbert Rozon and chief operating officer Bruce Hills. Christopher Plummer was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Tantoo Cardinal received the Earle Grey Award. Natasha Negovanlis of Carmilla captured the Fan’s Choice Award.

Canadian Screen Award Winners in Digital and Immersive Storytelling

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is pleased to announce that 10 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS and 1 Social Innovator Award were presented tonight in digital & immersive storytelling categories. This Canadian Screen Awards Gala was hosted by Chris Robinson at The Great Hall, Toronto.

Yolanda Gampp is the recipient of the newly minted Canadian Social Innovator Award. This award is decided by fan votes. Voting closed on Tuesday, March 7 at 12 pm EST.
