Everything about Cracked, eh?

Ratings: Winter premiere week numbers

From Bill Brioux of TV Feeds My Family:

  • Murdoch Mysteries lifts CBC’s premiere week
Premiere week is over. How did CBC do? The first week of January is a big one for CBC as the public broadcaster tries to take advantage of a more-or-less down week in network television to sneak on its 2013 series premieres. The network headed into the beginning of the year behind the 8 Ball with Hockey Night in Canada off its schedule due to the prolonged lockout, although the good news is the CBC’s most-watched broadcast returns Jan. 19. Add in budget cuts, the loss of popular supper hour driver Jeopardy! and other slings and arrows and its a wonder CBC managed to keep the lights on at all last fall. Read more.

Cracked examines shades of grey

From Scott Stinson of the National Post:

  • The head cases of Cracked
This exchange, from the premiere episode of Cracked, nicely sums up the nut of the new CBC drama: a police procedural about a fictional Toronto police unit — Psych Crimes and Crises — that pairs detectives with psychiatrists, the series has a natural tension between the cops and non-cops. In the opener, Detective Aidan Black (David Sutcliffe, Gilmore Girls) thinks the Rosedale murder might simply be a botched robbery. His partner, Dr. Daniella Ridley (Stefanie von Pfetten, NCIS), wonders if the killer has sensory or memory issues related to light. Thus the light bulb. And the crack about unicorns. Read more.

From a media release:

MAJOR CRIMES MIXED WITH MEDICAL ISSUES, CBC-TV’S ALL-NEW CRIME DRAMA – CRACKED – PREMIERES THIS JANUARY

  • Part of CBC- TV’s premiere week, CRACKED begins Tuesday, January 8 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT)

New to CBC this January, comes the hour-long procedural crime drama CRACKED, inspired by real life experiences of frontline police officers and mental health workers tackling some of the city’s most intriguing cases. Premiering Tuesday, January 8 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC Television, CRACKED is a unique combination of police procedural and medical drama, which delves into the psychological side of policing and the emotional impact on the front-line workers.

CRACKED stars David Sutcliffe (Gilmore Girls, Private Practice) as Detective Adian Black, alongside his new partner, psychiatrist Dr. Daniella Ridley, played by Stefanie von Pfetten (NCIS, Battlestar Galactica). Rounding out the cast are Luisa d’Oliveira (The Good Wife, Supernatural) as Detective Poppy Wisnefski, Dayo Ade (Lost, NCIS Los Angeles) as psychiatric nurse Leo Beckett and Karen LeBlanc (Shattered, ReGenesis) as Inspector Diane Caligra.

Detective Aidan Black, a seasoned officer dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder is reassigned to the newly created Psych Crimes and Crisis Unit. There, he’s dismayed to find his partner is not another cop, but forensic psychiatrist Dr. Daniella Ridley, who left her prominent position at a downtown hospital to partner with the police. Black and Ridley are joined in the newly-formed unit by a cynical young Detective, a compassionate psychiatric nurse and a supervising Inspector keeping a close watch over the group and its unique partnerships.

Passionate and opposing viewpoints are an inherent part of the job in Psych Crimes, and the answers the teams seek never come easy. Black’s deep insight and investigative skills combine brilliantly with Ridley’s keen ability to decipher human behavior. Learning to work cohesively, the Psych Crimes and Crisis Unit investigates the city’s most troubling and psychologically complex crimes.

CRACKED was created by writer Tracey Forbes (Flashpoint, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Toronto Emergency Task Force officer Calum de Hartog and is produced by White Pine Pictures in association with CBC.

Watch CRACKED, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) beginning Tuesday, January 8.
