A farmer is brutally murdered and his daughter, Charlotte (Anastasia Phillips), admits to the crime. Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) doesn’t think it’s so neat and tidy however and begins to realize that there is something very strange about the usually docile and considerate Charlotte. When Murdoch interviews Charlotte’s mother and brother he realizes he needs an expert in the fledgling field of psychology to get through to the increasingly unpredictable Charlotte. Murdoch brings in the well-known “alienist” Dr. Roberts (Paul Amos) to help him determine what is happening to Charlotte. It’s only then that Murdoch uncovers the horrifying and grisly family secrets that lie at the root of her problems.

In a Masonic Temple, Victor Bernard (Kevin Dennis) drops dead during his initiation ceremony. Witnessing the suspicious death are fellow Masons Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) and Crabtree (Jonny Harris). They have to pull rank to convince their fellow members to allow Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a catholic, and Ogden (Hélène Joy), a woman, into the temple to conduct their investigation of a closed and secretive membership which includes many of the city’s movers and shakers. As the investigation proceeds, Ogden discovers that Victor Bernard harboured a stunning secret that may have been led to his murder. Murdoch ultimately discovers the identity of the killer and the tragic irony that led to Bernard’s death.

Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) is called in to investigate the murder of police constable Felix Cooper (Martin Hooper) in Toronto’s Chinatown. Findings from Ogden’s (Hélène Joy) post-mortem lead Murdoch and Cooper’s beat partner, Constable Randall Townsend (Gabriel Hogan), to investigate herbalist Feng Choy (Simon Sinn) who was paying bribes to Cooper. Murdoch suspects that Choy is being set up and that somehow his teenaged granddaughter figures in the murder. Murdoch’s dogged investigation into the fearful and mistrusting world of Chinese immigrants will lead him to expose the dark underbelly of police corruption and could prove to be both career and life threatening.

Set in 1895 Toronto, Murdoch Mysteries is a one-hour drama series that explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) a handsome young detective using radical forensic techniques, like fingerprinting and trace evidence, to solve some of the city’s most gruesome murders. The premiere episode finds Murdoch running for his life from British Intelligence agents accusing him of murder. He finds himself in Bristol, England with no memory of who he is, how he got there and why anyone would want him dead.
