Tonight: Marketplace, Fifth Estate

Marketplace, CBC – “Juicy Secrets”
Marketplace bites into breakfast and puts premium orange juice and popular take-out breakfast sandwiches to the test. About two-thirds of us have bought premium orange juice in the past six months, many convinced by claims of pure and natural juice, which make it seem like oranges fall off the tree into the carton. But that’s not the whole story. In Juicy Secrets Tom Harrington talks to juice lovers and an expert who wrote the book on OJ, revealing just how much it is processed – from storage in vats for months at a time, to how the companies ensure consistent flavour. We reveal what the labels don’t tell you. Plus, just about everyone’s trying to make healthier choices in the New Year. So MARKETPLACE is digging into breakfast-on-the-go, a booming business with restaurants hungry to win you over. Erica Johnson joins the morning commute in Toronto, serving up breakfast sandwiches. We crunch the numbers on the trendy take-out meals, revealing sodium, fat and calories – and better ways you can start your day.

Fifth Estate, CBC – “Mr. Big Stings: Cops, Criminals and Confessions”
It’s one of the most controversial police investigation techniques and it’s homegrown. Illegal in many other countries, including the U.S. the RCMP’s “Mr. Big sting” has recently had serious limits imposed by the Supreme Court of Canada. Cops get murder suspects to confess by posing as a criminal gang, befriending suspects and gaining their trust through odd jobs and payment. Eventually, suspects meet the crime boss, “Mr. Big” who says he can help them with any charges they have – but only if they confess first. The creator of Mr. Big, who acted as the crime boss in dozens of stings, appears on camera for the first time to defend his technique, while top defence attorney Marie Henein raises concerns about the RCMP’s methods. the fifth estate looks at three of Canada’s most infamous cases in light of the new rules and tries to find out where the truth lies when you mix Cops, Criminals and Confessions.

Omnifilm Entertainment and Emily Andras adapting Nora Roberts’ latest book trilogy

Omnifilm Entertainment has secured the rights to bestselling author Nora Robertsʼ latest trilogy from Berkley Books, The Cousins OʼDwyer. Lost Girl Executive Producer Emily Andras will write the television series adaptation, entitled “Blood Magick”, the title of the final book in the trilogy.

Blood Magick is a contemporary genre continuing series set in Ireland, featuring sorcerer cousins Iona, Branna and Connor OʼDwyer as they face off against the ancient evil of the dark sorcerer Cabhan.

The series begins as American-born Iona Sheehan arrives in Ireland, where her ancestorsʼ blood and magic have flowed through generations – and where her destiny awaits. She tracks down her cousins, Branna and Connor OʼDwyer, and since family is family, they invite her into their home and soon she joins their mission to defeat Cabhan.

“We at Omnifilm Entertainment are delighted to be in business with Emily Andras, the very talented Executive Producer of Lost Girl, as she adapts Nora Robertsʼ thrilling Blood Magick trilogy for television,” said Paulo de Oliveira, Omnifilm SVP Scripted Programming and Executive Producer. “Nora Roberts is an author of unparalleled popularity, and we look forward to seeing her wonderful work realized for the screen.”

All three books in the Cousins OʼDwyer trilogy – Dark Witch, Shadow Spell, and Blood Magick - debuted at #1 in both paperback and e-book categories on the New York Times bestseller list. Nora Roberts is the bestselling author of more than 200 novels with more than 500 million copies of her books in print worldwide. Every Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb title released in 2014 hit the New York Times bestseller list, keeping up a streak started in 1999.

“Iʼm very excited to bring Blood Magick to series television,” said Andras. “These characters are so passionate in their fight to protect their home and each other, itʼs easy to be drawn into their dangerous quest. Set in Ireland’s enchanting County Mayo, the books detail a haunting and sensual world. With Noraʼs stories guiding us, we look forward to bringing Branna, Connor and Iona to life for the millions of Nora Roberts fans throughout the world.”

The project is being structured as a Canada/Irish co-production and will be pitched in the coming weeks.

Clara Hughes’ epic road trip documented for CTV’s Big Ride

clara_hughes

From a media release:

Bell Media announced today the debut of the new original documentary CLARA’S BIG RIDE as its anchor program for the fifth annual Bell Let’s Talk Day. Premiering in primetime on Bell Let’s Talk Day, Wednesday, Jan. 28, the one-hour documentary will be available on demand all day on CraveTV and CTV.ca, before airing at 7 p.m. ET/PT in super-simulcast on CTV and CTV Two and live-streamed on CTV GO. CLARA’S BIG RIDE is a powerful documentary directed by multi-award winning filmmaker Larry Weinstein (Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, Our Man in Tehran, TSN’s THE 13th MAN), chronicling an unprecedented 11,000 km bicycle journey across Canada by six-time Olympic medalist and Bell Let’s Talk spokesperson Clara Hughes. Throughout the journey, Hughes spreads a hopeful message designed to break the silence surrounding mental illness and helps create a stigma-free Canada.

Part catalyst for change, part epic road movie, CLARA’S BIG RIDE is a rousing documentary that tackles the profound conversation on mental health and the stigma surrounding mental illness. Crossing every region of the country, the documentary features brave stories from Canadians whose lives are touched by Hughes’ historic ride.

In the spring of 2014, Hughes embarked upon an exhilarating journey on her bicycle in an effort to unite Canadians in a much-needed conversation on mental health, and to spark positive changes in the way mental illness is perceived. The documentary recounts the epic 110-day journey through 105 communities and 235 events in varied and often extreme weather conditions.

Over the course of the documentary, CLARA’S BIG RIDE captures the voices of a group of heroic young Canadians as they tell their stories of living with mental illness. These voices include: Stacey, a teacher from Lindsay, Ont.; Marisa, a Media Relations Coordinator from Montréal; Antigonish, N.S. student Dexter; University of Prince Edward Island student Alanna; Dorothy, who runs a community program called “Going Off, Growing Strong” in Nain, a remote town in Northern Labrador; Sally, a practicing artist from Dawson City; Royal Roads University student Megan in Victoria; Canadian Armed Forces Veteran Terry; and Pascale, an outspoken teen and mental health advocate.

One of the greatest amateur athletes in Canadian history, with six Olympic medals in cycling and speed skating – two distinct sports crossing Summer and Winter Games – Hughes’ athletic prowess brought her national recognition, including the Order of Canada, and, just as she completed the ride, the Meritorious Service Cross. While cycling across the country, Hughes shares her own story of battling depression on the heels of her Olympic success.
