Also on hand to receive an award during the ceremonies were Paul Gross, recipient of the NBC Universal Canada Award of Distinction, Victor Garber, recipient of the Cineflix Award of Excellence and CTV presented the Sir Peter Ustinov Award to Mark McKinney.

Earlier today the Alberta Film Awards Lunch also provided the opportunity to recognize outstanding contributions by individuals and companies to the television industry. Shaftesbury Films received the Lionsgate/Maple Pictures Innovative Producer Award; DVS Digital Video Systems accepted the Deluxe Outstanding Technical Achievement Award; Lionsgate Television was honoured with the Variety Outstanding Achievement Award and Trina McQueen received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Two new series go into production in Vancouver this summer

Corus Entertainment’s W Network, Canada’s #1 specialty channel for women, announced today that it will be producing two new series this summer. Working with Vancouver’s Worldwide Bag Media, Anna & Kristina’s Style Bag (working title) will go into production this July and the docu-soap The Cupcake Girls, from Vancouver-based Force Four Entertainment, will start production later this month.

Family Channel and Playhouse Disney announce Canadian productions

Family Channel and Playhouse Disney Canada announce slate of Canadian original productions

Astral Media’s Family Channel and Playhouse Disney Canada today announced the commissioning of six new and returning Canadian original productions. New series for Family Channel include half-hour comedies Angel on Campus (Temple Street Productions) and Baxter (Shaftesbury Films), which join new seasons of returning series including the second season of Connor Undercover (Heroic Film Company/Shaftesbury Films) and the third season of Overruled! (Shaftesbury Films). Playhouse Disney Canada has commissioned two new animated series for younger audiences, Stella and Sam (Radical Sheep Productions) and Justin Time (Guru Studio), which join the previously announced new seasons of popular series The Secret World of Benjamin Bear (Amberwood Entertainment) and Franny’s Feet (Decode Entertainment). Production begins in Toronto for all series in late summer/fall 2009, with broadcast premieres slated for 2010 and 2011.
