In the news: Movie channels producing Canadian dramas

Tamsen Tillson of Playback points out that Canadian drama is alive and well … on channels not many Canadians get:

  • Scripted Cancon alive and well on TMN
“Of the series that have resulted – among them Slings & Arrows, G-Spot, Terminal City and ReGenesis – some have been more successful than others. The critics loved Slings & Arrows, which, in its third and final season, bagged three Geminis. ReGenesis airs in (count ’em) 110 countries (and is the highest-rated series on France’s ARTE, according to Marion) and recently won an International Interactive Emmy for its online version. Their latest offering, Durham County, premiered in early May to enthusiastic reviews.”

In the news: Durham County’s writer

Brendan Kelly of the Montreal Gazette profiles Durham County creator Laurie Finstad Knizhnik:

  • A bright side to the dark side
“Durham County has garnered rave reviews from TV critics across the country. The gritty drama will make the segue to non-pay-TV next year when it airs on Global, and there is talk that the producers might shoot another six episodes next year. Finstad Knizhnik is also preparing to write a novel focusing on the same characters.”

Critics love Durham County

From Marise Strauss of Playback:

  • Critics cheer Durham debut
“The buzz about Durham County has been sudden and very positive. “Visually sumptuous and adult,” decreed John Doyle in Friday’s Globe and Mail, throwing in “grim,” “compelling” and “deeply disquieting” for good measure. Its “complex characters are painted in subtle shades of grey,” says Rob Salem at the Toronto Star, and, according to blogger and Blood Ties writer Denis McGrath, it is “maybe the best drama series Canada has ever produced” in English.”
