CTV Orders New Comedy Pilot Dan for Mayor

From a media release:

  • Corner Gas co-star Fred Ewanuick cast in lead role
  • Pilot created, written and produced by Gemini Award-winning creative team

While politicians are stumping for votes across the country, CTV has thrown its support behind a new mayor. CTV announced today it has commissioned a new scripted, half-hour comedy pilot, Dan For
Mayor, starring Corner Gas co-star Fred Ewanuick. This is the second comedy pilot ordered in as many weeks, following last week’s announcement that CTV has commissioned a pilot for Brent Butt’s latest project, Hiccups. Dan For Mayor is created by three of Canada’s most respected comedy writers and
producers – Mark Farrell (Corner Gas, This Hour Has 22 Minutes), Paul Mather (Corner Gas, Rick Mercer Report) and Kevin White (Corner Gas, This Hour Has 22 Minutes). The pilot for Dan for Mayor is slated to begin production outside Toronto on October 20.

In Dan for Mayor, Gemini Award-winning actor Fred Ewanuick (Corner Gas, Robson Arms) plays Dan, a 30-something bartender who lives and works in the fictional city of Wessex, Ontario. Dan’s had the same friends since grade school, his most prized possession is a vintage Ms. Pac-Man game, and his last
serious relationship was with a girl who is now engaged to someone else. His life seems to be firmly on the path to more of the same… until a chance comment suddenly puts him in the running for mayor of Wessex. Dan for Mayor charts Dan’s voyage of self-discovery as he, along with best friend Jeff and ex-girlfriend Claire, stumble their way towards election night.

“Dan for Mayor is a project with an award-winning creative team behind the scenes and an accomplished comedic actor in front,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. “Dan is an easily likable character that resonates with anyone who has suddenly found themselves on a brand new career path.”

The pilot for Dan for Mayor is produced by Sad Glasses and QVF Inc. in association with CTV and The Comedy Network. Creators and executive producers are Mark Farrell, Paul Mather and Kevin White. Sue Murdoch (Doomstown) is the producer and Ron Murphy (Billable Hours, Heartland, ReGenesis) is the
director.

Farrell, Mather and White also worked together on the award-winning Corner Gas creative team. Mark Farrell was the Supervising Producer for Seasons 1 and 2 of Corner Gas and has continued to write and produce for the show, winning a Gemini Award for Best Comedy Writing last year. Gemini and Canadian Screenwriting Award winner Paul Mather was the Senior Story Editor on Season 1 before becoming Supervising Producer for Seasons 2-4. Gemini nominee, and winner of a Canadian Screenwriting Award (with Brent Butt), Kevin White
was the Supervising Producer on Seasons 5 and 6.
