So You Think You Can Dance Canada’s Tamina and Joey Eliminated

From a media release:

  • Fourteen are left to dance for Canada’s Vote
  • Canadian Icon Rex Harrington and Hot Tamale So You Think You Can Dance
  • Judge Mary Murphy join the panel as Guest Judges, Oct. 29 and 30

So You Think You Can Dance Canada host Leah Miller announced live on CTV tonight that after more than 1.2 million votes were cast across the country, Tamina Pollack-Paris and Joey Matt are the next dancers to leave the stage. Fourteen dancers are left to compete for Canada’s votes on Wednesday, October 29 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV (go to CTV.ca to confirm local listings).

Last night’s performances inspired guest judge and High School Musical 3: Senior Year Director Kenny Ortega to declare, “All I can say is that the last time I sat in a room with…this much talent was before any of you were born. That was on Broadway watching Michael Bennett’s A Chorus Line.”

And tonight, the results of the country-wide poll revealed that the three couples who received the lowest number of votes and had to dance for their lives this week were Kaitlyn Fitzgerald, 18 and Izaak Smith, 19, who performed the Cha-Cha; Tamina Pollack-Paris, 19 and Joey Matt, 19, who performed a Hip-Hop routine and Natalli Reznik, 28 and Francis Lafrenière, 28, who danced the Rumba. After performing their solos and “dancing for their lives,” the judges deliberated and decided that Tamina Pollack-Paris from Toronto, ON, and Joey Matt from Calgary, AB, would be sent home.

The results show opened with the Top 16 performing a breathtaking Viennese Waltz group number co-choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance Canada judge Jean Marc Genereux and his wife France Mousseau. Dressed in black and white, the competitors danced to “Old School” by Hedley, flowing in and
around a large picture frame.

Next week two new judges join Tré Armstrong and Jean Marc Genereux on the judging panel. The first is Canadian Rex Harrington, a former Principal Dancer with the National Ballet of Canada and current Artist-in-Residence for the company. The second is Mary Murphy, best know as the “Queen of Scream” on the
U.S. version of So You Think You Can Dance and guest judge during the audition tour on So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

Peterborough, Ont. native Rex Harrington joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1983 and became a Principal Dancer with the company in 1988, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. Renowned in both Canada and abroad for his interpretations of classical roles in Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Giselle and The Sleeping Beauty, Harrington’s performances established him as one of the most accomplished and charismatic male dancers of his era. In 2006, Harrington was appointed Artist-in-Residence with The National Ballet of Canada, was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000 and was given a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2005.

Best known for her trademark scream, infectious laugh and quirky catch phrases, So You Think You Can Dance judge Mary Murphy has helped make the U.S. show a smash hit around the world. Murphy also brought her “Hot Tamale Train” to Canada as a guest judge during the So You Think You Can Dance Canada audition tour. Murphy began her career as a professional ballroom dancer and is the Owner and Director of Champion Ballroom Academy in San Diego, CA. Murphy also runs Mary Murphy’s Chance To Dance program, which brings dance to children in underprivileged areas.
