Paul Anka guest judges on Cover Me Canada

From a media release:

THE STARS ALIGN FOR EPISODE SIX OF COVER ME CANADA

The star power is in full force for CBC’s COVER ME CANADA this week. With four finalists remaining, the show puts the spotlight on Canada’s world-renowned crooner, Paul Anka. The pressure is on for the finalists as they “strut their Paul Anka stuff” in front of the panel of judges – Jordan Knight, Deborah Cox and Ron Fair, as well as this week’s special guest judge, Paul Anka.

A teen idol since the ‘60s, Anka is one of this country’s most treasured singer songwriters. His numerous hits have garnered him national and international acclaim, including a JUNO Award in 1975 for Composer Of The Year and an Academy award nomination for his theme song in the movie The Longest Day. During his career he has been inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame, Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, American Hall of Fame, is a member of the Order of Canada and has a star on Canada’s Walk Of Fame. Paul Anka has a long history with CBC television, including the 1965 Chateau Laurier Presents Paul Anka and his 1972-73 CBC variety show, ANKA.

Also in the house will be former member of the band Oasis, current lead singer of Beady Eye, Liam Gallagher. Gallagher, who is married to COVER ME CANADA host, Nicole Appleton, will be an on air special guest this Sunday. Natalie Appleton, Nicole’s sister and former bandmate in All Saints, will be on hand for the show as well.

This week’s songlist is a tribute to Ottawa native Anka, with the finalists taking on their own versions of some of his most treasured songs;

Warren Dean Flandez will recreate Diana, one of the best selling songs ever penned by a Canadian recording artist. It brought Anka instant stardom.

Ali Milner will reinvent Put Your Head On My Shoulder, which was released as a single in 1959, hitting #2 on the Billboard Top 100.

Melanie Morgan will take on Puppy Love, which charted in 1959, has remained one of Paul Anka’s most beloved songs and covered by artists such as Donny Osmond and Britain’s S Club Juniors.

Whosarmy will put their own spin on Anka’s 1959 hit, Lonely Boy. Anka first sang it in the film, Girls Town, and made his acting debut in the film alongside Hollywood stars Mel Torme, Mamie Van Doren and Ray Anthony.

Tune in to see Warren, Ali, Melanie and Whosarmy kick off the show with She’s A Lady, a song Anka wrote for ‘70s singing sensation Tom Jones. Released in 1971, the song rocketed up the Billboard charts and is remembered as one of Jones’ most famous hits.

COVER ME CANADA is broadcast on Sundays at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC. Host Nicole Appleton (All Saints) and judges Jordan Knight (New Kids On The Block), chart-topping R&B sensation Deborah Cox and star-maker manager and record exec Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Black Eyed Peas, Pussycat Dolls), along with mentor-producers Hawksley Workman, Kuya and Gavin Brown, preside as the finalists perform live in a bid to win the hearts of the nation and the opportunity of a lifetime: a $100,000 cash prize and a recording contract for an original single to be released by Universal Music Canada.
