HGTV seeks extraordinary Canadian small town to star in Hometown Takeover Canada

From a media release:

Today, HGTV announced a nationwide call for Canadians to show their small-town pride and nominate their community to be featured in the new Canadian original series Home Town Takeover Canada, set to premiere on HGTV and stream on Citytv+ in fall 2026/winter 2027.

Beginning today, Canadians can visit hometowntakeovercanada.ca to share why their town is deserving of this life-changing makeover.

Previously announced as part of Rogers Sports & Media’s slate of new Canadian original unscripted series for HGTV, Home Town Takeover Canada is the first expansion of the popular U.S. “Home Town Takeover” franchise.

Home Town Takeover Canada is on a mission to spark a nationwide small town revitalization movement, starting with one special town. Inspired by the success of three seasons in the U.S., the new Canadian series will shine a light on a Canadian small town facing real challenges and give it the boost it needs to get back on its feet.

“We’re excited to celebrate and showcase the resilience, heart and deep sense of community rooted in small towns across our country,” said Kale Stockwell, Head of Original Programming, Rogers Sports & Media. “Home Town Takeover Canada will not only revitalize one special town but also share the stories of the people who make the selected town so unique.”

Home Town Takeover Canada will see support from HGTV stars Ben and Erin Napier (Home Town, Home Town Takeover) along with fellow Canadian designers and builders all contributing to make a big impact.

HGTV is looking for a Canadian small town that has a population of 20,000 or fewer and is asking for submissions to include photos and videos of the areas in the community that need the most love, whether it be public parks, main streets, gathering places or changemakers’ homes.

Home Town Takeover Canada is produced by RTR Media and will begin production in 2026. Selected location, host and broadcast details to be announced in the coming months.

  1. In August nine communities on the northern shore of the northern Avalon Peninsula were decimated by wildfire. Over 200 structures were lost many of them homes, historical landmarks and Infrastructure. Our post office, several community centres and elementary schools are gone. Western Bay and Ochre Pit Cove took the brunt of it but so many beautiful old structures are gone throughout the region. This would be an ideal place for your program while also keeping other eyes on our area. Many houses lost have no insurance (estimated to be 79%) and most of them are either seniors or new families. Please consider usl

  2. Hello ,

My name is Simone Donaldson and I am a Realtor in North Western Ontario, serving the Marathon and Manitouwadge Communities. We all live in a magical area surrounded by the Boreal Forest and thousands of lakes.
This area has world class fishing and hunting opportunites. We also have excellent employment prospects. Marathon Ontario is located on the shores of Lake Superior and offers new comers the chance to explore the pristine wilderness that surrounds us.

Manitouwadge is a small town further inland, know for it’s friendly community and extremley affordable housing.

For those looking to relocate and those that cannot afford housing in the big cities, this is a wonderful option.
Marathon is a booming community with all the ammenities needed for health care, schools, recreation and outdoor activities.

Manitouwadge also has the same ammenities just on a smaller scale.

Many downsizers, retirees, first time buyers and those looking for a bargain, love our area and what it has to offer.
For a change of pace and a new lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle, this is the place to be!

Please consider our communities in your search. We have affordable housing, friendly communites, recreation, schools and all the ammenities needed for comfortable living.

I would love to chat further about our communities and am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Kindest regards
    Simone

  3. Hi there,

Kirkland Lake needs this desperately. It’s a small old mining town with so much history. It consists of very old buildings and houses. Currently, theres a mine in town that provides employment for many people in town that work hard to provide for their families. Mining is a difficult job that has taken many lives in this town and puts many at risk. House and building fires frequent this area and quite a few houses and buildings are abandoned. However, when this little town experiences extreme upsets, the community comes together to support one another. Children grow up together, people become friends and join teams/sports together. This isnt my hometown, but it feels more like home than my original hometown. Please consider this town and visit sometime.

    1. Yes pls keep Kirkland Lake in mind. The mine is looking to hire many more people and are looking to increase oh r population by a lot. Finding housing is already an issue. We need to be able to safely accommodate many new families.
Kirkland Lake is an incredible community that work together to make things happen.
It is a privilege to have been part of this community since being a child and having raised our now three adult sons. Northeastern Ontario is such a beautiful place! We would also love to be able to increase tourism in order to share the beauty of this area.

      1. I agree with the 2 ladies above! Kirkland Lake and surrounding area has produced/generated billions in gold, forestry and other resources for over 100 years, yet…the money leaves, like countless other resource-rich communities. We are a perfect fit for this project, with a population of just over 8,000 (est.). The Mayor, Stacy Wight, recently announced a commitment to putting the town back on the map by promoting The Arts, developing the Tourism Industry, focusing the Town’s re-development on more than hockey and mining. In case you know the joke, I play left wing…

As Co-Chair of the only theatre within 100 km, The LaSalle Theatre dreams of being an anchor facility for the Performing Arts and a reason to come live and visit the “true North”.

With a strong, active and thriving Arts community, Kirkland Lake would be a fantastic canvas for your team to inspire Canadians looking for a great community, desperate for realistic real estate to see what small-town spirit is all about.

Come discover the Canadian Shield, the beauty of it’s harshness and healing qualities only found in pure nature.

Kirkland Lake was once booming and vibrant. People from all over the world have come to earn a living, hone a skill, get out of city chaos.

Please come! We welcome your talents and vision with open arms!

  4. Our little seaside town of Grand Bank was built on the fishery. From fishing schooners,to trawlers,to a fish processing plant Grand Bank has proven to be resilient. However, making a life from the sea has come with many hardships. For centuries ,the sea’s bounty has provided many with a good living. But, the unpredictability of these waters has brought many brave men to their watery graves. Grand Bank was once a thriving community with a population of 5000 . Today, we are a mere 1000 residents. We continue to take much pride in our fishing history as we navigate a secure future for our families. What a great opportunity this would be to be a part of your show!

  5. PORT DOVER ONTARIO NEEDS YOUR HELP.

PD is a small town that needs help. We are loosing our nightlife our community feeling our gathering place for locals to come and enjoy each other and this beautiful port town.

  6. On September 24,2022 my beautiful hometown of Port aux Basques was devastated by Hurricane Fiona.. myself and hundreds more families were affected. Homes were lost, businesses were lost, our lives were changed drastically. The entire atmosphere of the town changed overnight. It’s been 3 years and trying to rebuild the town has been slow. This town is the “gateway” to Newfoundland being the port for the marine Atlantic ferry from the mainland. I love this town and the people in it. Newfoundland is rich with history, culture, and filled with the nicest people on earth. I would love to see our town revived and be more welcoming and vibrant to all who visit. Our beautiful beaches , mountains and forests deserves to be celebrated!

  7. Whitney Ontario. Gateway to Algonquin Park. Where the people are always friendly and not much changes. You are never a stranger just friends that have never met. The beauty of Algonquin stretches far past the East Gate into the perfect little town in need on an update. Somewhere I am proud to say is my Hometown.

  8. Teulon Manitoba could use this facelift! It is a small town in the heart of the Interlake between Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg. Our downtown area is in dire need of TLC. There was a recent fire in the middle of town that left a vacant lot which is an eyesore, and the business fronts could use some colour and beautification.

    1. Yes to Prince Rupert! Look at their website! They are in desperate need of a makeover!!
3rd deepest natural harbour in the world with cruise ships coming in and the tourists see nothing but a sad town.

  9. Our beautiful little town of Gimli, MB, located along the shores of Lake Winnipeg, could use a little lift. There is never enough money in the coffers for the extras that come with beautification of a town. We have a lively harbor that hosts many bands on the summer weekends. We have a pavillion that is the center stage for a lot of our celebrations but it is very run down and in great need of assistance in order to bring it back to the thriving hub it once was. A place where dances were a weekly event in the summer and weddings were held often. Our town is lovely but it could definitely use a little lift to bring it back to where it should be. Thank you for your consideration.

  10. Owen Sound, Ontario used to be a beautiful place to be. We are surrounded by waterfalls and there is so much history here. Our downtown used to be beautiful and a place people used to want to come and see. It’s changed a lot over the years and despite community efforts, downtown just isn’t a place anyone wants to be anymore. It seems to be beyond repair and people have given up, which is a real shame as this place truly can be and was so beautiful. Our population is a little over what you’re looking for but really, any of our communities in the Grey/Bruce area could really use this. Another small community with a ton of history that is just starting to lose it’s beauty is Kincardine, ON. There have been great efforts to keep it up there and it is one of the nicest places I have ever been. I almost feel bad suggesting it as I know places like Owen Sound could use the help much more but so much could be done there to take a load off the community and help them out as well. The only reason I do want to mention them is because they do in fact care a lot and the help would be appreciated and I know they would try to keep up with it after and not let it fall back into pieces.

  11. Dundalk, Ontario
Small town , population is growing but could use a nicer park for children or something for a night life … it’s a pretty quiet town much not much things to do, everything closes early …

I’m not sure the population as of 2025 but according to google the population as of 2021 was 2,803

  12. Nominating Wheatley Ontario
Wheatley is a quaint town that is known for being a fresh water fishing village. Or at least it was now it is known as the town that blew up and had a fire at its water plant. Right now Wheatley has lost a good chunk of its downtown core due to explosion and the water distribution plant is not operating but with a temporary station and some help from neighbouring town of Leamington. Would love to see what Hometown Takeover could help our little town with.

  13. i would like to nominate Neil’s Harbour. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
there was a storm a few years back and the lost a lot , like homes and roads.

  14. Mattawa, one of the most historical places you can find in Canada. Since the early 16 hundreds, explorers have been using the Ottawa River system to access all points westward. The aboriginal people and the early explorers did a whole lot of fur trading here at the Hudson ‘s Bay post in Mattawa. It would be our pleasure to share our history with both of you and hopefully you may be able to help with our community. Thank you for allowing me to seek your assistance with our small town.

  15. Chalk River is a small, tight-knit community tucked along the beautiful Ottawa River in Ontario.
Our history is unique—we’re home to Canada’s pioneering nuclear research facilities and a proud military presence that has supported national defense and scientific innovation for decades.
Despite our big contributions, we remain a small town with a population of only a few hundred , surrounded by forests, rivers, and incredible natural beauty.

  16. Hornepayne ON, is the perfect town for this amazing opportunity!!
We are located just 5 hours away from Thunder, Bay ON. The town of Hornepayne is a rural yet prosperous town! Hornepayne is home to one of the most beautiful provincial parks: Nagagmasis. The lakes and woodland aspect of this town is remarkable! The beauty of this town is incomparable! The town had to close the main source of community (the town mall). Aside from this closure there are only 4 other franchise businesses (gas station, bank, grocery store). The town is booking with beautiful entrepreneurs and dreamers. This town has so much potential. I really appreciate the time to portray Hornepayne????

  17. Hi HGTV, be would love you to renovate in Noelville, Ontario Canada. We are located just north of the French River with lots of trails and nature all over. We have fishing, camping, snowmobile trails and so much more but our local grocery store could use some loven along with our 1 restaurant in town. And a lot of our homes need some repair and I believe my community is an aging one on limited incomes. Please consider us. Thank you

  18. The heart of B.C Canada, Vanderhoof!! It’s a very small town that has a loving and supportive community. We could use some extra help as most of our small business are locally owned. This could help Vanderhoof become more popular and known for being the heart of B.C.

  19. We live In Blackfalds Alberta a very vibrant community 2 hrs east of Rocky Moutains. Our town really needs some senior living accommodations as there is none here. Thanks ??

  20. Markdale ON or Paisley ON. Both charming farm towns with loads of resilient people who are set on helping their communities thrive

  21. Eganville, Ontario is the jewel of the Ottawa Velley, we just need it to shine. We have a lot of natural resources for visitors to enjoy but people just drive through to get where they need to go. We need something/someone to pull them in and enjoy all we have to offer here like local artists, fishing, beautiful falls, caves, geo trail, etc. please help us be the best little town that we so need to be. Our little town has never been given a chance to be the next shiny thing that people attract to. Please give us this chance, thank you.

  22. Please consider Amherst NS. We have a small town rich with history. Booming in the past. We are a border town to NB. We are the major shopping hub for Cumberland County N.S.
We could really use a face lift/ exposure to feature our Sandstone buildings from the 1800’s.

  23. Ridgetown, Ontario. Known as ‘The Friendliest Town in Ontario, minutes from Rondeau Park, one hour from the major centres of Windsor and London, home to the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus; one of Canada’s finest agricultural universities. Beautiful buildings, tall trees, great parks. And a lot of vacant buildings on Main Street. As a resident, Realtor®, visual artist and media producer I’ve dedicated significant time and resources promoting this town. And we are making progress. Being featured on this show would definitely be a major boost in bringing awareness and investment to this town.

  24. I would like to nominate Riverside, Albert in New Brunswick. This little village has had its struggles when lost its industry. New Brunswick, is not a rich province, so therefore money is hard to come by. However, we are rich in natural resources and natural beauty. The people are the best neighbours you could ever hope to have. This area has a lot of cultural diversity. It has the beautiful Acadian History. The many dykes in the area were built by the Acadian people. This area had shipbuilding one time that employed many in the area. But, shipbuilding has faded away. There is the remains of a once thriving community, and a large grindstone and a large grindstone waterwheel are there to prove this place was a working wharf. This area is a natural habitat for shorebirds making their way from, Alaska to Mexico. They stop in our area to feast on local shrimp. People in the community are often privileged to see the “Murmuration of the Sandpipers” in middle August.
This area is so beautiful, the people welcome everybody with a smile and a open heart. Please consider our little village for “HGTV SEEKS EXTRAORDINARY CANADIAN SMALL TOWN TO STAR IN HOMETOWN TAKEOVER CANADA” Thank You.

  25. Nova Scotia Seaside Province Region of Queens south shore area. Anyone of the small communities needs a facelift from sea faring to small towns needing a main street facelift. We never get the opportunity to buy the choices of items in the neighbourhood that people living in the cities do. Choices are restricted. But we have some of the sweetest little cottages around . Try out Liverpool Mill Village and the small communities nesting by the sea

  26. I would like you to consider my small hometown St. Lawrence,Newfoundland. Although I left a long time ago it is still home in my heart, our town is small but the people are hardworking and caring individuals who will always do for others. They have suffered many hardships over the years but always bounce back with fierce determination. Rich in their history the small community could really use a facelift. A fresh look for the community.

  27. Sunderland Ontario – the Toronto / Nipissing Railway over 150 years ago became the Grand Trunk Railway and eventually the Canadian National Railway – the town is replete with historic buildings, Blue Rodeo has played here yearly, Tragically Hip video used our bank. This is a town with a proud people and history with old fashioned values yet also rainbow sidewalks – we are farmers, newcomers, and yet inclusive!

  28. Cottam, Ontario …is a beautiful small growing town , surrounded by farming communities, ..some historical houses from the 1800’s,
The community is feeling the hits from the tariffs , job losses and could use a facelift and would love to have the help of Hometown to revive it !!!

  29. Liverpool Nova Scotia! Beautiful town in need of a serious facelift. There are a lot of vacant commercial properties on Main Street in need of love. And even a large old hotel which is now served as apartments which is in need of a lot of repair. So much potential in this little town! Let’s make Liverpool new and inviting again!

  30. Crowsnest Pass in Alberta is a GEM in the Rocky Mountains. A complex of 5 tiny towns that are home to not over than 6,000 people total. We are 2 hours south west of Calgary and we have a lot of history here.

Frank is one of the towns and it’s home of the Turtle Mountain which holds a tragedy that happened in the beginning of the 20th century, the Frank Slide.

The town of Coleman is the home of the history of Run Runners. There’s a restaurant with the same name and the Crowsnest Pass Museum holds a lot of history about the prohibition period. Also in Coleman, there’s the Roxy Theatre. One of the only THREE theatres in Canada built in a rare Quonset hut-style. It’s currently closed since the 70s/80s after a fire. Locals volunteer doing fundraisings and hold a project called Revive The Roxy. But there’s still a lot to conquer.

In the town of Bellevue there is an old Mine that is open to public to explore a tour with forehead flashlights in a pinch black one kilometre guided tour.

In Blairmore we have our own little ski hill. In the middle of the town. There’s also an old cool movie theatre that doesn’t work and needs a new roof. No one was able to buy it and renovate it because of the costs. The downtown Blairmore is like stepping back in time. Sometimes it feels like walking at the Heritage Park” in Calgary.

The town of Hillcrest has not many resources, if any. It’s home of the late Hillcrest Mine, which was the Canada’s worst mine disaster and killed 189 people. The mine closed in 1939. But Hillcrest is the calmest of all towns. It’s tucked in away from the highway and the residents can appreciate breathtaking views.

The Crowsnest Pass has a LOT to offer and not too much investment. Younger families have moved in a lot in the past years because of the job offers at the EVR mine (previously owned by Teck Resorces) in Sparwood-BC, our neighbour town. Even with more people, there has not been a lot of growth. We still only have a small grocery store, a tiny hospital that doesn’t support all the resources needed and not much to do in the winter, unless you are really into ski and snowboarding. The numbers of kids and teenagers are growing but they need more to do too.

I vote for the Crowsnest Pass to be considered. We are beautiful and we deserve a lot more.

  31. Please consider Indian Head , Saskatchewan. The Grand Theatre could use some upgrades to remain a hub for movies and live events in this lovely prairie town.
