In the news: Kalan Porter back after mom’s illness

John Kennedy of CanWest News Service interviews the second winner of Canadian Idol:

  • Post-Idol Kalan puts mom first
“By the time Porter was crowned Canadian Idol in 2004, previous winner Ryan Malcolm was already on his way to being the answer to a trivia question. “I think sometimes people assume that it’s going to be a guaranteed career,” says Porter, “and I think it’s just sort of that foot in the door, that jump start to a possible career.” But Porter had better luck than his predecessor. His multi-platinum first single, Awake in a Dream, propelled his debut album, 219 Days, to the top of the charts and sparked a virtually sold-out 65-stop tour. Porter earned three Juno nominations and a MuchMusic Video Award. Still, Porter says he had mixed feelings about Idol.”

In the news: Canada’s Next Top Model winner has drive to succeed

From Tara Merrin of Sun Media:

  • Top Model’ winner aims to succeed
“After so much being made of the new look, feel and calibre of City-TV’s CNTM this season, the only surprise was seeing a girl so similar to last year’s winner, Andrea Muizelaar, take the title. Both are from Ontario. Both have red hair. Both come from low-paying jobs. And both were deemed the least “pretty” of the Top 10. Still, Hardy says there is one big difference between her and her predecessor — drive.”

In the news: Little Mosque-like show to air in the US

From Bill Brioux of the Canadian Press:

  • U.S. show like CBC’s ‘Mosque’
“A U.S. network comedy – The CW’s “Aliens In America” – bears a striking resemblance to CBC’s hottest show in years. Like “Little Mosque,” which premiered to 2.4 million Canadian viewers last January, “Aliens In America” is a fish-out-of-water story about a Muslim who finds himself living in a community of white North Americans in a Midwest, heartland setting.”
