Synopsis – Everest, airing Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 on CBC

An eclectic and combative mix of Canadians go to climb the world’s tallest and most historic peak. Laurie Skeslit has just lost his best friend in a climbing accident near Banff that he believes was his fault. As the expedition treks through the dramatic Nepalese countryside toward Everest the angry conflicts between the Expedition leaders do little to reassure the deep doubts Laurie has about climbing and the guilt he feels over his friend’s death.

No sooner are they on the mountain than a huge avalanche kills three of them. Two days later, a collapse of ice seracs crushes another. The media turns against them, the sponsors cut off supplies and tell them to come home. The mountain is too unstable. Half of the climbers leave. As the rest are about to go, Laurie digs deep to find inspiration and becomes convinced they must go on. Inspired by the ghosts of past climbs, deaths and triumphs, he and a small group decide to give it one last try.

Starring Eric Johnson, Jason Priestley, William Shatner, and Leslie Hope.

Coming up on TV, eh? Blogtalkradio:

August 24, producer JJ Johnson talks about the innovative kids exercise series Roll Play, which has 18 bands writing original music for the upcoming season, as well as the series Are We There Yet: World Adventure, where two sibling pairs travel to 10 countries.

In the news: Canadian Idol recap

From Sarah Millar of the National Post:

  • Canadian Idol Recap: Another Idol Goes Home
“We start with the dreaded Idol medley (boy that guy Amberly grabbed was so not into her performance, and did not rock along with her at all). After 3.3 million votes, one Idol is still going home. Ben says that Monday night the Idols showcased the best of Canadian Rock (really? I thought it was Made in Canada week). Simple Plan will perform tonight and the Idols will answer some of our questions (oh please, no – I hated this segment on American Idol, I hoped it wouldn’t move north). We meet the judges and go to Monday’s recap.” Read more.

Five Guys Remain as Amberly Thiessen Eliminated from Canadian Idol

From a media release:

All-Male Top 5 to perform Judges’ Choices from The Beatles’ songbook next week as Anne Murray rescheduled to August 25/26

It’s official: the next Canadian Idol will be a guy. Amberly Thiessen, the last female in the competition, was eliminated on tonight’s live CTV broadcast, leaving five males to duke it out for the 2008 title. Thiessen, 19, a student from Seven Persons, AB, received the fewest of more than 3.3 million votes cast last night, up 7% compared to the same episode last season. Next week, the all-male Fab Five will perform music from the songbook of the greatest group of all time, The Beatles, as selected by Canadian Idol’s four-member judging panel, Farley Flex, Jake Gold, Sass Jordan and Zack Werner. Due to a scheduling change, legendary songstress Anne Murray will now mentor and perform on Canadian Idol during Top 4 Week, August 25 and 26.
