In the news: CBC’s ‘self-destruction’

Ira Wagman writes in Geist (via The Tyee) about CBC’s change in direction in order to attracte younger viewers:

  • The Self-Destruction of the CBC
“The result of this new strategy has been as embarrassing and awkward as an old person in a Fubu sweatsuit. Reality shows such as Dragon’s Den and the recently unveiled Fashion File Host Hunt are pale imitations of programs airing on other networks, like The Apprentice or MuchMusic VJ Search. Speaking of MuchMusic, former VJ George Stroumboulopoulos delivers news with a punk aesthetic on The Hour, which consciously incorporates nose rings, stuff from YouTube and contests sponsored by Doritos. Another example of product integration, Kraft Hockeyville, united Canada’s hockey-crazy communities and the purveyor of ‘KD,’ a prized Canadian foodstuff.”

In the news: Degrassi’s return to form

Joel Rubinoff of the Waterloo Record talks about the Degrassi season finale (see second item):

  • Series finale may mark end of Stiller’s reign
“Years after compromising its integrity for a shot at the more superficial U.S. market, Canadian-made Degrassi: The Next Generation (9:30 p.m. Monday on CTV) — oft-cited as the greatest teen show on the planet –makes a welcome return to form with a season finale that trades, not in the high school stereotypes it has lately relied upon, but on a tempestuous same-sex romance that mines real emotions with poignant dramatic effect.”

In the news: No Opportunity Wasted recruitment

Bill Harris of Sun Media talks to Phil Keoghan about goofy pitches and recruitment for the Canadian version of the reality show:

  • Reality show wants to help Canucks
“Phil Keoghan was asked to identify the goofiest pitch he ever has received for his TV show No Opportunity Wasted. ‘We had a guy who wanted to climb a Mayan pyramid in high heels, dressed in drag, and scream at the top of his lungs, “I am woman, hear me roar,”‘  said Keoghan, best known as host of The Amazing Race.”
