Review: Dan For Mayor episode “Claire 2.0”

From R. Lackie of The Signal:

  • Dan For Mayor, “Claire 2.0? (2.04)
I have to say, the show is improving on a weekly basis. I like that the show has set up a few situations possible when Dan gets involved: Dan has selfish intentions and wins out, but realises he was wrong. Dan has good intentions and loses out. Review: Dan For Mayor episode “Awkward Speedoo”

From R. Lackie of The Signal:

  • Dan For Mayor, “Awkward Speedoo” (2.03)
This week, Dan For Mayor didn’t necessarily elicit much in the way of laughs, but they’ve definitely started to find a way to use their cast in a way that isn’t frustrating. New tonight: Dan for Mayor on CTV – “Claire 2.0”

Dan (Fred Ewanuick) jeopardizes his popularity when he proposes a property tax hike and runs late for his stint as a celebrity judge at a spelling bee. His tardiness doesn’t go unnoticed and Dan forgets to go “off the record” with an overzealous student journalist, resulting in a larger story in the Wessex Herald highlighting Dan’s extraordinary spelling skills. Meanwhile, Mike (Ben Ayres) finds himself upgrading on the girlfriend front.

Though Dan For Mayor is still about as funny as it was last year (which is, sad to say, not very much), it’s improved very much in another sense: the show is finally as charming as its lead actor. Fred Ewanuick was always winning as Dan, even when the writing made him a purposeless doofus, but we never had a significant reason to root for him. While running for mayor, he never really wanted it, and was completely unqualified, so his journey was not something I wanted to watch. His lack of self awareness also bugged, because he doesn’t work as a Michael Scott-type character. Read more.
