From Robson Arms writer David Moses:

  • Robson Arms “Season Three” Sneak Peek After American Idol
“What does a “sneak peek” mean? In the news: The celebrity of a Canadian actor

From Jay Stone of Canwest News Service:

  • Homegrown actors don’t get to live on celebrity
“They shot a Canadian movie recently called Love and Other Dilemmas, and the cast included three actors who are in the TV sitcom Corner Gas, three from the sitcom Robson Arms — two of them are in both series — plus two from Godiva’s, one from Smallville and one from Stargate: Atlantis. ‘It’s what you need to do as a Canadian to pay the bills,’ says Fred Ewanuick, one of the Corner Gas/Robson Arms people.” Read more.

The year in TV

Alex Strachan of CanWest News Service lists the best of TV, including Intelligence, Corner Gas, and Robson Arms:

  • Cheer up, television has never been better
“Good grief. So that was the TV year that was. A writers strike. Catfights, celebrity spats and family feuds — and that was just The View. Here’s a look back, through the prism of the stages of grief, as defined by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author of On Death and Dying.” Read more.

Joel Rubinoff of the Waterloo Record isn’t as optimistic about the state of TV, and gives Falcon Beach and Whistler the dubious distinction of being among the worst of 2007, while Degrassi is one of his best:

  • TV’s Year of Living Dangerously
“Degrassi: The Next Generation (CTV): The greatest teen show on the planet rediscovers its mojo with a same sex romance between control freak Paige and teen rebel Alexa. The year’s most compelling — and bittersweet — love story.” Read more.

Rob Salem of the Toronto Star includes Little Mosque on the Prairie in his best of 2007:

  • We’re crazy about TV’s Mad Men
“A provocative premise, a terrific cast … and, however unlikely and unprecedented, a large and loyal Canadian audience. (Runners-up: Durham County, Across the River to Motor City.)” Read more.

The Globe and Mail names Zarqa Nawaz of Little Mosque on the Prairie one of their people of the year:

  • Arts Person of the year runners-up
“The public broadcaster gambled that Little Mosque would be the breakout hit it so desperately needed. Turns out, it placed the right bet. In its first season, roughly 1 million viewers tuned in weekly. This season, the average was 785,000 — a respectable turnout for a show that managed to lure away two top writing guns from its comedic rival, CTV’s Corner Gas, the most-watched Canadian comedy on TV.” Read more.

CTV Strikes iTunes Canada Deal

From a CTV media release:

Hit programming from CTV and its specialty channels The Comedy Network and MTV are now available from the iTunes Store in Canada (www.itunes.ca). iTunes becomes the next digital platform for CTV’s original Canadian series, in addition to The CTV Broadband Network and Rogers’ CTV on Demand service. The iTunes deal represents for CTV yet another opportunity for viewers to catch up to episodes already broadcast on CTV.

CTV programs for purchase include Canada’s most-watched comedy series, Corner Gas, international hit Degrassi: The Next Generation, critically-acclaimed series Robson Arms and Gemini Award winner Instant Star.

“I’m very excited about Corner Gas being on iTunes,” said Brent Butt, star of Corner Gas. “Initially I was excited because I thought it meant Corner Gas was going to be turned into a musical. But it turns out I was confused. The show will be available on iTunes just the way we made it, which is also awesome.”

iTunes’ CTV content will allow viewers to catch up to previously-aired episodes and purchase just-broadcast episodes the day after their television premieres:

CTV

  • Corner Gas: previously-aired episodes from Season 4 and the current Season 5 are available today. New episodes from Season 5 will be available the day following their television premiere on The Comedy Network.
  • Robson Arms: the complete second season is available immediately. New episodes from Season 3 will be available the day following their television premiere on CTV.
  • Degrassi: The Next Generation: the complete sixth season is available immediately. New episodes from Season 7 will be available the day following their television premiere.
