In the news: Robson Arms

John Doyle of the Globe and Mail talks to the people behind Robson Arms:

  • Robson Arms’ special qualities are apparent even during filming
“Making the series is something of a juggling act for producers. Cast members Gabrielle Miller and Fred Ewanuick are also working on Corner Gas and rarely available. John Cassini also stars in Intelligence. The shooting schedule is deftly shifted around to accommodate their availability. Amazingly, with all this juggling going on, the atmosphere on the Robson Arms set is laidback and happy. Those elusive actors want to be part of Robson Arms and the producers want them back. Everybody seems serene because they know they’re making a special kind of television – smart, heartfelt and funny, the kind of TV to savour over and over again.”

In the news: Interview with John Cassini

John Doyle of the Globe and Mail talks to John Cassini of Intelligence and Robson Arms:

  • Hey, don’t I know you from that other show?
“I was hired for Robson Arms but it took so long to get on the air that I was already doing Intelligence by the time it aired. Believe me, there was no master plan to have two great jobs in Vancouver. It gets very busy but I’m not complaining, I’d be an asshole if I complained about this situation.”

In the news: Vancouver TV production

John Doyle reports from Vancouver:

  • Live from Vancouver, where the action is
“Intelligence comes from Haddock Entertainment, as did Da Vinci’s Inquest and Da Vinci’s City Hall. All three have been made here, set here and have dealt with issues that directly reflect the reality of life in and around Vancouver. Da Vinci’s City Hall focused to an extraordinarily detailed and compelling degree on the municipal politics and street life of a major Canadian city. This fall, I understand, there will be a Da Vinci’s City Hall TV movie for CBC. I’ll be talking to Chris Haddock in the next few days about that. I’ll also be talking to John Cassini, who stars in Intelligence as Ronnie Delmonico, the key sidekick to main character Jimmy Reardon (Ian Tracey). Cassini also stars in Robson Arms as Yuri Kukoc, the superintendent of the Robson Arms apartment building. “

In the news: Leo winners

Ken Eisner of the Georgia Straight runs down BC’s Leo winners:

  • Leaders of the pack, including Douglas Coupland, crowned at Leo Awards
“Among TV productions, the goodies were also evenly distributed, with Robson Arms (supporting) and Whistler (lead) splitting the acting honours; Haig Sutherland and the ubiquitous Gabrielle Miller were named for the former, and Jesse Moss and Amanda Crew cashed in for the latter. Veteran Janet Wright got the best-performer prize for Corner Gas (which, oddly, was in a separate category from Robson Arms). In the dramatic-series awards, the ambitious miniseries Dragon Boys got nods for screenwriting (Ian Weir) and musical score (Tim McCauley), while super-popular Smallville flew off with top series and director trophies (for James Marshall).”

In the news: CTV’s fall schedule

Lee-Anne Goodman of the Canadian Press points out the lack of new Canadian shows:

  • CTV congratulates itself for U.S. shows it’s picked up for fall in glitzy launch
“The network’s Canadian shows, in fact, weren’t highlighted till midway through the launch, when Brent Butt took to the stage to promote the upcoming season of the beloved hit sitcom, “Corner Gas.” “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” “Whistler” and “Robson Arms” join “Corner Gas” on the slate of returning Canadian shows, but there were no new ones on the schedule.”

Marise Strauss of Playback notes a conspicuous absence:

  • CTV drums up drama
“Absent from the CTV schedule, however, is the homegrown comedy Jeff Ltd., which aired on Saturdays.”
