In the news: Canadian series have strike advantage

From Marke Andrews of the Vancouver Sun:

  • Canadian productions get boost from U.S. strike
“The U.S. writers strike has given Canadian producers a higher profile south of the border, because Canadians are still making drama and comedy. In addition to The Guard and Insight’s projects, Canadian series jPod, The Border, Sophie and MVP are filling CBC TV’s primetime schedule.” Read more.

In the news: CBC Ratings

From Marise Strauss of Media in Canada about last week’s ratings:

  • Sophie, jPod do well for CBC
“Sophie, the English-language version of a hit Quebec sitcom, premiered to a sound 630,000 viewers on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., following the mid-season debut of Mosque. The antics of the residents of Mercy, Saskatchewan drew 804,000 viewers, up from the second season debut of 750,000. (All times Eastern, all ratings 2+ unless noted.) Total viewership of jPod (pictured) trailed with 472,000 on Tuesday at 9 pm, the time slot formerly held by The Tudors. However, among viewers 24-54, the new one-hour series based on Douglas Coupland’s bestselling novel exceeded CBC’s highest rating ever for this demo. Of the 472,000 viewers who tuned in to the offbeat comedy on its Tuesday night debut, 62% (293,000) were in the highly-desired 25-54 group.” Read more.

From Denis McGrath at Dead Things on Sticks, about this week’s ratings:

  • CBC Hangs On
“Little Mosque did 910 000. Sophie, at 8:30, did 625 000.” Read more.
  • Not a Lot of Pod People
“As it ran smack into the juggernaut that was the return of American Idol, the numbers tumbled from a 472 000 start to 250 000 for Episode 2.” Read more.

In the news: ‘Fresh’ new CBC season

Jason Chow of the Ottawa Citizen:

  • New CBC shows are something to write home about
“The usually staid, boring and risk-averse CBC launched four new midseason series last week — The Border, jPod, Sophie and MVP. It’s unlikely the CBC will undo Canada’s addiction to hammy David Caruso anytime soon (CSI: Miami remains the country’s top-ranked show and routinely pulls in more than two-million viewers each week) but the network has finally created a primetime schedule that is actually watchable, and at times fresh and slightly sexy — adjectives that have rarely been associated with the network in recent years.” Read more.

In the news: CBC’s cliched comedy

From Bill Brownstein of the Montreal Gazette:

  • Radical rethink at CBC coughs up some seriously clichéd comedy
“Audacious, yes, and for that we give the CBC bonus points. But coherent, clever, comic? Not so much. And let’s just say jPod stars Alan Thicke (yes, that Alan Thicke) and Carol Jarlewski will never be confused for Californication’s David Duchovny and Weeds’s Mary-Louise Parker, although they are cast in similar roles. And that Natalie Brown, playing the mercurial talent agent in Sophie, will never, ever make us forget the most fab Jeremy Piven, playing the mercurial talent agent in Entourage.” Read more.
