In the news: Canadian shows – along with Canadian mailboxes – on US TV

From Katrina Onstad in the New York Times:

  • Funny, You Don’t Look Canadian
“Soon television audiences will be seeing a lot more red mailboxes, as shows created in Canada infiltrate the American broadcast networks. NBC just introduced “The Listener,” about a telepathic paramedic; ABC has picked up “Copper,” described as “Grey’s Anatomy” with rookie officers; CBS has scheduled another police procedural, “The Bridge,” as a midseason replacement next winter. All three programs are shot in Toronto.” Read more.

Frank Cassini in The Bridge

From a media release:

frank-cassini-headshotVancouverite Frank Cassini heads back to his roots for the CTV/CBS Series THE BRIDGE

Local boy Frank Cassini is set to entertain the public when he heads back to his hometown of Toronto to star in the cop drama THE BRIDGE next month.

Cassini, a first generation Canadian of Italian descent, born in Toronto, is thrilled at the opportunity to return to his roots to play Staff Sergeant Bernie Kantor as part of the ensemble cast.

The Bridge is based on the insights and real life activities of a Police Union Head, highlighting the struggles street cops face as they do double duty battling crime and their own insiders, in order to protect society and ultimately themselves.

The series will be in front of the lens from mid-April for three months, and should give Cassini an opportunity to see what’s changed since his departure many years ago. Cassini’s journey’s had him venturing to NY, LA and ultimately winding up in Vancouver to pursue his acting career, which has seen a flurry of activities, most notably his role in the recent big screen blockbuster WATCHMEN.

Often playing the role of cop, Cassini feels right at home with his character, and knew when he was shooting the pilot last summer that this series had the potential to be a hit.

“The whole process of working with the incredible cast and crew was exciting. I felt then and there that this pilot and the producers and directors involved had the potential to create something even bigger. Alan Di Fiore’s writing is fantastic. I got a taste of Alan’s work when I did a few episodes of Da Vinci’s Inquest in which he was one of the principle writers. I’m sure that the role of Kantor is going to be fully realized because of the type of writer he is and the kind of show it is.”

CTV and CBS are rumoured to be airing the two-hour pilot in mid July, while the series will still be in production.

In the news: Canadian shows offer cheap alternative for US nets

From Andy Fixmer of Bloomberg:

  • CBS, NBC Buy Canadian TV Shows to Save on Costs as Ads Shrivel
“U.S. networks have made shows in Canada for years to gain tax benefits. Now they are buying dramas written and produced for Canadian TV and set north of the border. CTV, the nation’s largest private broadcaster, is sharing costs and will air shows at the same time. The results are licensing fees for new dramas that are about half the typical $1.6 million per episode.” Read more.
