The Directors Guild of Canada Honours the Best in the Business at the 14th Annual DGC Awards

The Directors Guild of Canada handed out 19 awards tonight honouring the best work created by Members this past year in a star-studded, elegant event. Three special career acknowledgments were also handed out during the evening, including the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award to filmmaker David Cronenberg.

Arisa Cox and Sean Cullen co-hosted the Awards Gala which was held at The Carlu in Toronto.  Presenters included this country’s hardest working filmmakers and actors; Megan Follows, Jerry Ciccoritti, Jason Priestley, Catherine O’Hara, Helen Shaver, Dan Levy to name just a few.

The allure of escapism: Canadian sci-fi TV series reach 10% of population

Telefilm Canada and the Canada Media Fund (CMF) today released the reach figures for Canadian science-fiction productions on the occasion of the spotlight on homegrown talent at MIPCOM, the world’s largest entertainment content market in Cannes (October 5-8, 2015). The data is based on research provided by Canadian audience measurement organization Numeris,

During the 2014-2015 broadcast year Canadian TV sci-fi series Orphan Black on CTV (4.3 million viewers*), Dark Matter on Space (3.7 million), Between on City Total and Killjoys on Space (both 3.2 million) each reached roughly 10% of the Canadian population. In addition, these shows performed above their respective channel averages in the very desirable 18-34 demographic.

During the 2014-2015 broadcast year Canadian sci-fi series also performed above their respective channel averages in the key 18-34 demographic.

Canadian sci-fi at MIPCOM
On October 5, stars of Canadian science-fiction programs will walk the red carpet for the MIPCOM Opening Gala, namely Jesse Carere and Justin Kelly (Between) as well as Hannah John-Kamen and Aaron Ashmore (Killjoys). On October 6, Telefilm and the CMF will hold the industry conference The Allure of Escapism: Engaging Millennials. Producers of Between(David Cormican, Executive Vice-President, Business Development & Production and Partner, Don Carmody Television) and Killjoys (John Young, Managing Director, Temple Street Productions), as well as cast members of those two productions, will discuss the challenges related to writing and producing sci-fi TV series and what makes this genre so appealing for millennials.

Marblemedia reveals primetime slate for MIPCOM

Award-winning content creation company marblemedia, will premiere three new development titles at MIPCOM from the company’s Primetime Scripted division, which launched last year. The projects come from their highly publicized partnerships with Cirque du Soleil Média and OutEast Entertainment and features prominent television writers Karen Walton, Jennifer Kennedy and Ian MacDonald.

marblemedia will unveil a new 13×60’ sci-fantasy thriller called Alchemy, created by the award-winning producer and writer Karen Walton (Orphan Black, Ginger Snaps). The series is the first project in marblemedia’s venture with Cirque du Soleil Média, which will see the two develop a slate of shows together. Alchemy is currently in development withShowcase (Shaw Media) and will be executive produced by Matt Hornburg, Mark J.W. Bishop and Jacques Méthé.

marblemedia is also bringing the much anticipated Thank You, Ashley Madison, written by Jennifer Kennedy (Justified) and Ian MacDonald (Punched Up). Produced alongside LA-based company OutEast Entertainment, the series centres around a mother of two who goes on a deep personal journey when she casts aside her conventional morality to start an adultery website to avoid financial ruin. The series will be executive produced by Matt Hornburg, Mark J.W. Bishop, Steven Marrs (Rogue) and Courtney Hazlett.

Lastly, marblemedia has acquired the rights to author Edeet Ravel’s riveting novel Held. The book, which was a finalist for the Next Generation Indie Book Award, centres around a woman named Chloe who is kidnapped during her vacation and placed in total isolation for several days before coming face to face with her abductor for whom she develops deep feelings.

Production begins on Season 4 of Orphan Black

Space, Temple Street Productions, and BBC America announced today that production has begun on Season 4 of the critically acclaimed original Canadian series, ORPHAN BLACK. Season 4 sees the return of the phenomenal Tatiana Maslany to her Golden Globe® and Emmy®-nominated role as multiple characters on the CSA and Peabody Award-winning series ORPHAN BLACK. The third season of this mind-bending thriller plunged into the clone sisterhood, as they came together to combat the new line of male “Castor” clones and their journey towards the truth of who, and what they are. In Season 4, Sarah returns home from Iceland to track down an elusive new ally tied to Beth’s past. Sarah follows Beth’s footsteps into a dangerous relationship with a potent new enemy, and uncovers a horrifying new facet of the conspiracy. The 10-episode fourth season shoots in Toronto on location and in studio until March 2016, and is set to premiere in Spring 2016.

This season on ORPHAN BLACK, the near constant terror pushes everyone to their limit, particularly Sarah’s daughter, Kira. Under pressure, Sarah’s old habits begin to resurface. The clones are pulled in disparate directions and Sarah finds herself estranged from the loving relationships that changed her for the better.

Returning to ORPHAN BLACK this season are fan-favourites Jordan Gavaris as Sarah’s battle worn foster brother Felix; Kristian Bruun as Alison’s incredibly devoted husband Donnie; Maria Doyle Kennedy as Sarah and Felix’s fiercely loyal and stouthearted foster mother Mrs. S; Kevin Hanchard as Art, a detective torn between being a good cop and his loyalty to the clones; Ari Millen as a new type of clone; Josh Vokey as Scott, science geek and confidante to Cosima; and Skyler Wexler as Sarah’s daughter Kira. Also returning this season is James Frain as Ferdinand, an intimidating and scheming executive; Alison Steadman as Kendall Malone, “the original” for both Leda and Castor clones; and Rosemary Dunsmore as Susan Duncan, Rachel’s adoptive mother and one of the leading scientists of Project Leda. Joining the ORPHAN BLACK cast this season is Joel Thomas Hynes(REPUBLIC OF DOYLE) in the role of “Dizzy”, an edgy, self-reliant hacker who doesn’t conform to group mentality.

Spearheaded by co-creator Graeme Manson, the writing team includes Russ Cochrane,  (ROOKIE BLUE); Alex Levine (FLASHPOINT); Aubrey Nealon (SAVING HOPE); Kate Melville (DEGRASSI); Chris Roberts and Niko Troubetzkoy (THE LISTENER). Returning to direct is co-creator John Fawcett, along with David Frazee (FLASHPOINT); Aaron Morton(SPARTACUS: WAR OF THE DAMNED); Ken Girotti (VIKINGS, RESCUE ME); and Grant Harvey (BITTEN). New to the series to direct is Peter Stebbings (KILLJOYS) and David Wellington (SAVING HOPE, QUEER AS FOLK). At the start of the season, Emmy®-nominated Canadian writer Semi Chellas (MAD MEN) consulted.
