QUESTION: WHO IS CANADA’S NEXT GREAT PRIME MINISTER?
ALEX TREBEK HOSTS THE NATION’S ANNUAL SEARCH

  • MARCH 18, AT 8 P.M., ON CBC TELEVISION

Emmy Award-winning Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek returns to his CBC roots to host CANADA’S NEXT GREAT PRIME MINISTER, Wednesday, March 18, at 8 p.m. As host of the one-hour special presentation, Trebek will lead four ambitious young candidates as they fight for their political futures in front of former prime ministers: Paul Martin, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell and Joe Clark.

“I’m honoured to take part in a show of this calibre and share the stage with this esteemed panel of prime ministers and young leaders in the making,” said Alex Trebek.

As in previous telecasts, the finalists are grilled by this highly experienced panel on current affairs, original solutions to national issues, ability to deliver a captivating political speech, potential impact on Canadian politics, charisma and stage presence. The candidates compete for a $50,000 cash prize and a coveted six-month paid internship with Magna International, The Dominion Institute and The Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program. The studio audience at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto will vote for the candidate who has the political panache to be CANADA’S NEXT GREAT PRIME MINISTER.

“This year’s finalists are faced with an interesting and tough political climate that will make for a compelling hour of political and entertaining television,” said Kirstine Layfield, CBC’s executive director of network programming.

The semi-finalists in the competition will be announced online today and proceed to boot camp where they will vie for one of four coveted positions on CANADA’S NEXT GREAT PRIME MINISTER. The identities of the final four candidates will be announced online at www.cbc.ca/nextprimeminister on March 11.

The online response has been overwhelming so far for the auditions phase of the program. The website has drawn half a million page views and continues to grow with young Canadians engaging each other on pressing issues of the day. It has become one of the largest online political debate forums in Canada.

And the conversation continues. Starting this week and every Wednesday until the broadcast, a video question will be posed online by high profile guests looking for Canada’s Next Great Answer. Digital guru Don Tapscott, author of Grown Up Digital, kicks off the 10-week contest with a provocative question. Anyone can answer it and be eligible to win fabulous weekly prizes at www.cbc.ca/nextprimeminister.

This exciting, significant broadcast is based on a popular nationwide competition originated in 1995 by Frank Stronach, founder and chairman of Magna International, in his quest to search for Canada’s best and brightest future leaders. It was created to engage young Canadians in the political process and to encourage them to think about ways to improve the country.
