- Longinus Fernandes, choreographer of the Academy Award®-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, choreographs for the first time on a SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE stage
Longinus Fernandes, the world-renowned choreographer best known for his work on the Academy Award®-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, brings Bollywood to the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA stage tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET on CTV (visit dance.ctv.ca to confirm local broadcast times). This marks the first time Fernandes has choreographed for a SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE franchise, giving Canada the opportunity to highlight Bollywood with the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA Top 18. The competitors will open tomorrow night’s Results episode with the group number, before one guy and one girl are eliminated from the competition.
Mumbai-based choreographer Fernandes has been performing and choreographing for over 15 years. Fernandes recently received the prestigious 2009 Filmfare Best Choreography Award for Best Film Choreographer (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane). The Filmfare ceremony is one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India and has been referred to as Bollywood’s equivalent of the Oscar®. Fernandes also received the 2009 Astaire Award for Slumdog Millionaire. No stranger to dance competition series, Fernandes gained widespread popularity when he was named the runner-up on Jhalak Didhhla Jaa, the Indian version of Dancing with the Stars. Prior to his work on Slumdog Millionaire, Fernandes choreographed dance routines for numerous Bollywood films including Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008), Mera Dil Leke Dekho (2006), Corporate (2006), Page 3 (2005) and Sajna Ve Sajna (2005).
