  • Oakville singer and Hamilton rapper from YouTube ‘Last Chance Auditions’ move on to semifinals

Emotions ran high as the first group of semifinalists awaited their fate on Canada’s Got Talent in the first-ever, live results show on Citytv earlier tonight. In a dramatic reveal, host Dina Pugliese delivered the news that the highest vote-getter of the night was seven-member dance group Freshh – earning them a guaranteed spot in the finals. Of the remaining six acts of the evening, the judges – Martin Short, Measha Brueggergosman, and Stephan Moccio – chose opera singer Julie Lafontaine to move on to the finale and join Freshh.Canada’s Got Talent airs every Sunday night at 8 p.m. local time, beginning April 8, and every Monday night at 9 p.m. local time, beginning April 9.

Freshh (the extra ‘H’ is for hip hop) took the Canada’s Got Talent stage by storm last night, wowing both Canada and the judges with their high-energy, choreographed dance routine. The seven-member Vancouver, BC group has danced with Canadian music artist K-Os at the Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and is now the first Canada’s Got Talent act to advance to the finals.

Julie Lafontaine, classical soprano singer from Montreal, QC, showcased her larger-than-life voice in a performance of “Libiamo” from La Traviata for the grand finale of the first live performance show. Wife and mother of four, Julie put her singing aspirations on hold to focus on her family but will now have the chance to pursue her dreams in the final round of Canada’s Got Talent.

Additionally, the top two YouTube acts from the ‘Last Chance Auditions,’ sponsored by Nissan, were revealed, rounding out the complete list of semifinalists competing for both the judges’ and Canada’s votes. Joining the 37 previously announced semifinalists are: Caitlin Bell, 19 (Solo Singer), from Oakville, ON, receiving the most viewer votes, and Mathew Cathcart, 21 (Rapper), from Hamilton, ON, as selected by the judges.
