From the Canadian Press:
CBC-TV’s edgy drama ‘Strange Empire’ cancelled after single season
CBC’s dark western “Strange Empire” has been cancelled. The public broadcaster says the rookie series, which premiered last October, is ending, but gave no further details. The network is set to announce future programming plans later this week. Continue reading.

I can’t say I’m really disappointed. Strange Empire was never the show I hoped it would be. “Dark and edgy” is never a real selling point for me. I loved the premise, the pilot was great and I really liked the characters of Kat Loving and Rebecca and Ling but I was hoping for more of a sweeping period drama full of adventure and romance.
And that was not a story the creator of Durham County would have ever done. CBC knew what they were getting into – whether audiences did or not is another question. But the ratings make this not a surprise. The consolation is that other than the very end, it stands as a fairly self-contained story. Let’s call it a long mini-series.
