In the news: BC productions celebrated at Leos

From Playback:

  • Geminis trump Corner Gas at 2007 Leos
“It might be a little after-the-fact buttering up, but judges handed the best music, comedy or variety program Leo to the 21st Annual Gemini Awards, which was broadcast from Vancouver Nov. 4, 2006, the first time the event has been hosted outside of Toronto. That left local favorite Corner Gas’ tank almost empty, a ‘big surprise’ noted Walter Daroshin, Leo Awards president, during the Saturday night gala at the Westin Bayshore, attended by 400-plus industry people.”

In the news: Shaw demanding Television Fund changes again

Grant Robertson of the Globe and Mail reports on the new challenge to the Canadian Television Fund:

  • Shaw demands ‘radical change’ in CTF
“Mr. Shaw has said the money could be put to better use. Though it has spawned some Canadian success stories, such as Trailer Park Boys and Little Mosque on the Prairie, which received $2.8-million and $2.5-million respectively last year, much of the money is being wasted on ‘shows nobody watches,’ he has said.”

Patricia Bailey of Playback talks to the head of the CTF:

  • Shaw attacks CTF, again
“‘The letter is a major surprise,’ [Douglas] Barrett tells Playback Daily. ‘We are doing our best to operate on a status quo basis pending the results of the CRTC review. Those bylaw amendments are all housekeeping. Nothing substantial is changing. Our procedures and practices are the same now as in previous years.'”

In the news: CTV’s fall schedule

Lee-Anne Goodman of the Canadian Press points out the lack of new Canadian shows:

  • CTV congratulates itself for U.S. shows it’s picked up for fall in glitzy launch
“The network’s Canadian shows, in fact, weren’t highlighted till midway through the launch, when Brent Butt took to the stage to promote the upcoming season of the beloved hit sitcom, “Corner Gas.” “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” “Whistler” and “Robson Arms” join “Corner Gas” on the slate of returning Canadian shows, but there were no new ones on the schedule.”

Marise Strauss of Playback notes a conspicuous absence:

  • CTV drums up drama
“Absent from the CTV schedule, however, is the homegrown comedy Jeff Ltd., which aired on Saturdays.”
