“I think it’s amazing and women often don’t get enough opportunity or the chances to do this, especially in this line of work. It is a show about women, yes we do have a lot of male fans, but it is a show about women. If you didn’t have women at the helm I don’t know how authentic it would be. Sometimes I’ll read a script or a description of a female character for an audition and before even looking you’re like ‘oh man, a man wrote this.’ I think there’s something to be said about women writing for women. It’s so nice when we get scripts or hear about storylines we’re like ‘oh my I went through something like that!’ Having women creating for women makes it so much more special, authentic and relatable.” Continue reading.

Mohawk Girls: Defending my turf!

Insecurities are abundant in Episode 3 of Mohawk Girls and, as a result, some very clear boundary lines are drawn: S/He is MINE is the theme, but we also see some cultural lines peppered throughout.

Bailey (Jenny Pudavick), Caitlin ( Heather White) and Luscious Leon (Dwain Murphy) all head to the city to attend James’ (Jeffrey Wetsch) art show. However, Watio (Jimmy Blais) also decides to turn up. His discomfort is palpable in the world of wine and canapes but he shadows Bailey, making it clear she is with him. Unfortunately, Watio’s presence makes a nervous Caitlin even more so; she is not ready for Kahnawa:ke to discover she is dating  Leon. Once the coast is clear—i.e. Watio and Bailey leave—a hyper-aware Caitlin defends her turf with typical Caitlin verve. There are some really fabulous Caitlin gems in this week’s episode. It is a good thing Leon is so understanding—does everyone agree we all need our own personal Leon in our lives? Caitlin is completely not herself and these two worlds keep colliding in and out of the bedroom.

Anna (Maika Harper) is torn between two Annas. The old Anna is trying to sort through her feelings for Thunder (Kyle Nobess) while the new Anna is out to take her newfound acceptance for a test drive. She attempts the latter. Her new BFF Butterhead (Meegwun Fairbrother) gives her a pep talk and sends her off again into the wilds of Mohawk dating. She tries once more, this time with Lyle (Kristopher Bowman) but after just one batch of macaroons, that too falls flat.

Zoe (Brittany LeBorgne) made it to the pink cloud. Despite feeling she has made a breakthrough with her sex addiction, her therapist points out Zoe is simply not ready for any entanglements. Undaunted, she revises her campaign platform and presents it to a captive audience at the local diner. Even the presence of her formidable mother and Chief (Tantoo Cardinal) during her impromptu presentation does not throw Zoe off her game. Impressed with her daughter’s political savvy, the Chief has encouraging words! Could Zoe really be gaining some control in her life?

Getting back to Bailey and Watio; while at the art show, Bailey felt attacked for her work at the tobacco factory. Watio comes to her defence—cue the awwwwww—but still that attack planted a seed. Now I think Bailey, in some part of her, whether she is ready to admit it or not, has realized she is “settling” with Watio. In order to  satisfy her need for adventure, she tries to find an avenue to pursue it professionally. Bailey applies for an unpaid intern position at a travel magazine, but this proves fruitless. She recognizes that, in order to compete for a job in Montreal, she needs to learn French, much to everyone’s dismay.

Now this is where we get to our mini cultural lesson—it remains a political statement by many Mohawks who reside in Quebec to deliberately speak English rather than French. Historically, the Mohawks sided with the British in colonial times, but of late this political rift stems from ongoing tensions as the Parti Québécois continues the fight for recognition of its sovereignty within Canada. This is a battle Mohawks have been fighting for more than a century: recognition of their sovereignty within Quebec and Canada. In fact, the school actress Heather White (our Caitlin) teaches at—Kahnawa:ke Survivial School—was built in 1976 in direct response to language Bill 101. For those of you old enough to remember, this was the time when French became the capital “D” dominant language in Quebec and those who spoke English found themselves at odds in their own province.

So what does everyone think? Will Team #Cailon reconcile? How is Watio going to react to Bailey taking French lessons? What the HELL is up with Anna and Butterhead? And is Zoe finally getting her head on straight? Let me know in the comments below.

Mohawk Girls: That’s just the way it is

This week on Mohawk Girls, reality is not all it is cracked up to be for our fab four. Caitlin (Heather White) realizes all of her past relationships have been dysfunctional, Bailey (Jenny Pudavick) feels Watio (Jimmy Blais) is forcing her to compromise her wedding dreams, Zoe (Brittany LeBorgne) feels she needs to dumb down her election platform in order to be elected, and Anna (Maika Harper) may not be ready to fit in at Kahnawa:ke after all. And that, folks is just the way it is. Sometimes life is not how we envision it to be.

This week, Caitlin and Luscious Leon (Dwain Murphy) went on their first dates and Leon was not sparing any romantic detail. Fancy restaurant, champagne, presents and he COOKS too—where do I sign up? Leon is definitely out to woo and Caitlin—having only dated Mohawk men like Butterhead (Meegwun Fairbrother)—is completely off balance as Leon treats her like the princess she deserves to be. Bailey and Anna seem happy for her. However, Zoe lashes out, worried Caitlin’s reputation will suffer and—dare I suggest—her own reputation by association? Despite these little hurdles, Caitlin continues on her path of self-improvement and starts her own home business with Leon’s support.

Meanwhile, Bailey and Watio are planning their wedding. Now we all know relationships are all about compromise, but given these two and their differences, are these compromises going to prove too much? Watio wants a simple wedding with a barbeque so they can include everyone, but Bailey has always dreamed of the huge fairy tale celebration. Auntie Velma (Ashley Michaels) steps in to pay for Bailey’s dream, but that causes some consternation. Watio’s pride is hurt. Eventually, he relents and Bailey gets the perfect wedding gown. After all, as Bailey’s dad Sose (Glen Gould) says: “Happy wife, happy life!” But how long can that type of happiness last?

Since Anna dropped out of school, she has found a job waitressing at the local bar. This provides an opportunity to make new friends at Kahnawa:ke, and a perfect place to start hunting for a replacement for Thunder (Kyle Nobess). But who should appear as her new BFF? Butterhead. I definitely smell trouble ahead for Anna now that she is taking advice from Butterhead; not to mention, how is Caitlin going to react to this news?

And finally, Zoe  has refined her election platform for Chief but the girls find it too highbrow for Kahnawa:ke. Determined, Zoe heads out into the community to get  some input. Left feeling defeated, Ohserase (Shawn Youngchief) rallies around her, and I think I even saw a brief glimmer of a spark. But Zoe is still taunted by her sex addictions. Can she pull off this election without stumbling back into her old naughty “good girl” habits?

As a side note, in what I like to call “our cultural lesson of the night,” this episode touched on what is commonly referred to as “white guilt.”  Ironically, it occurs in the Caitlin/Leon storyline as Caitlin suspects Leon’s kindness comes from some need to “save the Indian.” This type of over reaction or compensation is common in mainstream society. When those of the settler populations come to learn of past horrors perpetrated on Indigenous populations they oftentimes overstep and try to take over in a need to quell their guilt. In tonight’s episode, it becomes clear Leon is not at all committing this but rather is just trying to demonstrate to Caitlin how much he cares.

What do you think is going to happen next? What is going on with Butterhead and Anna? Let me know in the comments below!

Comments and queries for the week of October 28

Loving those Mohawk Girls

I’ve really liked this show from the beginning. The characters all seem real and relatable and the writing is actually fairly good at times with several truly funny moments, which is saying a lot because there are so many unfunny comedies on TV right now. There are a few rough spots in the writing and acting but I think that’s just because they are giving less experienced writers/actors a chance to learn/grow which is a good thing. —Alicia

Hating Bachelor Drew

I could not stand Drew and the possibility of him being on The Bachelor Canada would repel me from watching the show. How could you possibly even contemplate such a thought? He is self-centred, egotistical and a real douche. Since Day 1, when he was introduced and kept winking at the camera I have had a hate-on for the guy. Who does he think he is, he is such a jerk. If Mike (firefighter, paramedic) does not get chosen by Jasmine I think he would make a great Bachelor Canada. —Irene

The only way ratings will go down is NOT due to Drew’s departure…it will be because she let Thomas go….Drew is so full of himself!!!! —H

Who would want to see any more shows with this fake person on it? I cannot even believe that offer would be made to a person who acts like him, particularly his obnoxious performance when he was eliminated. Nobody wants to watch THE DREW show, except maybe DREW. Just an all around bad human being. At least the show will warn people off him and not allow the fake salesman into their lives. —Bev

Mohawk Girls — Beast of a season premiere!

WELCOME BACK to the LADIES from Kahnawa:ke! It has been 11 months and one week–not that I’ve been counting–since we last got to laugh at all of your crazy goings-on. And, finally, we learned whether or not Bailey (Jenny Pudavick) said yes to Watio’s (Jimmy Blais) proposal (She said yes!). Let’s go over everything that happened in Tuesday’s Season 4 return, “Fauxhawk.” Let’s see what it means to be a real Mohawk. Who is fake and who is real? Who is denying their true self?

We pick up Season 4 of Mohawk Girls the day following Hawi’s (Adriana Garisto) near disaster fundraiser. Zoe (Brittany LeBorgne) is skulking home following an a-rousing good night at the sex club. Despite the fundraiser’s success, no one is forgiving Zoe’s disappearing act. She takes some impulsive steps to make amends but to no avail. In yet another attempt to regain control of her life, Zoe goes to the extreme and decides, “I am running for Chief!” Now I have two questions: how do you all feel about having a diagnosed sex-addict as your Chief, and how is Zoe’s mum (Tantoo Cardinal) and current Chief going to react to the news her daughter is running against her?

Caitlin (Heather White) has her own dilemma. The oh-so adorably cute, incredibly sincere Leon (played by newcomer Dwain Murphy–welcome to the family!) is committed to a relationship with her. But his lack of Mohawk blood presents a huge problem for Kahnawa:ke. Initially turning him down, Caitlin reconsiders and agrees to a relationship with the Luscious Leon! FINALLY. I have been shipping Team Cailin for what seems forever, but I also suspect Butterhead (Meegwun Fairbrother) is not going to react well to an outsider replacing him in Caitlin’s life.

Anna (Maika Harper) is trying her darnedest to get back with Thunder (Kyle Nobess). Even though he misses her, it seems Team Thana is done because Thunder simply cannot forgive Anna for her treatment of her mother (Nadia Verucci). Anna’s only consolation? Kahnawa:ke finally embraces her and has become home. But at what expense to herself? And now that she is single, what kind of trouble is Anna going to get into with her newfound acceptance?

And finally, as I mentioned at the top, we learned Bailey said yes to Watio’s very public proposal. She is wearing his ring, but she is definitely experiencing some second thoughts. Is this cold feet, or is her heart trying to tell her this is the wrong man?

A BIG SHOUT OUT to Tracey Deer, Cynthia Knight and the entire Mohawk Girls team, including Rezolution Pictures, for a great season opener! Also a Thank you for APTN: this year we get eight episodes and they are spread out over eight weeks!

Let me know your thoughts on the season opener in the comments below! What do you think our fab four Mohawk ladies are going to get up to this season?
