Everything about The Listener, eh?

In the news: More on Canadian TV in the US, including The Listener

From John Doyle of the Globe and Mail:

  • Canadian TV writers take themselves too seriously
“The Listener (CTV, NBC, 10 p.m.) continues. It drew more than one million viewers in Canada last week, and although it got some negative reviews in the U.S., it’s certainly worth seeing as another example of a Canadian-made show that’s been picked up by an American network. I don’t care for it at all, but to each his own. And Toronna does look gorgeous in it.” Read more.

In the news: Canadian shows – along with Canadian mailboxes – on US TV

From Katrina Onstad in the New York Times:

  • Funny, You Don’t Look Canadian
“Soon television audiences will be seeing a lot more red mailboxes, as shows created in Canada infiltrate the American broadcast networks. NBC just introduced “The Listener,” about a telepathic paramedic; ABC has picked up “Copper,” described as “Grey’s Anatomy” with rookie officers; CBS has scheduled another police procedural, “The Bridge,” as a midseason replacement next winter. All three programs are shot in Toronto.” Read more.

Reviews: The Listener

From Alex Strachan of Canwest News Service:

  • ‘Listener’ at least has some fine acting
“Listen up, now. The Listener, a new, made-in-Toronto drama series featuring Halifax native Craig Olejnik as a paramedic who can read people’s minds, is light, slight, silly summer entertainment — no more, and no less.” Read more.

From Tom Shales of the Washington Post:

  • ‘Listener’ Shouldn’t Be Seen, Let Alone Heard
“”The Listener” lists, and finally tips over. Except for some appealing qualities in its young star, Craig Olejnik, the new NBC series premiering tonight is just another loopy downer about an everyday schmo who has otherworldly powers.” Read more.

From Ellen Gray of the Philadelphia Daily News:

  • 2 new shows, 1 season opener are pleasant diversions
“The writers, while showing a certain lack of imagination in feeding Toby the voices of passers-by – no, it’s unlikely that woman who passes you on the street, guys, is thinking what they think she’s thinking – have at least invested their lead with a mildly intriguing backstory.” Read more.

In the news: Profile on Lisa Marcos of The Listener

From Rob Salem of the Toronto Star:

  • Ex-model cops new series role
“In the seven years since the remarkable Lisa Marcos gave up modelling for acting, she has travelled the typical career path of almost every new Canadian actor, starting with anonymous walk-on roles in locally shot series, generically credited as “Bar Maid” and “Waitress” (Street Time), “Concerned Nurse” (Tarzan), “Attractive Nurse” (Wonderfalls) and “Bride” (The Visual Bible).” Read more.
