CBC announces fall television schedule

CBC Television confirmed today the season premiere dates for its primetime broadcast line-up. Anchored by returning fan-favourites and bolstered by five exciting new shows, CBC has a new way to look at smart with CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON, hosted by Jessi Cruickshank and Jeff Douglas beginning September 28; CBC Selects presents JANET KING from Australia’s public broadcaster on Oct. 5, gritty western drama STRANGE EMPIRE on October 6; gripping political thriller THE HONOURABLE WOMAN starring Maggie Gyllenhaal on September 29 and continuing September 30, and the new six-episode, Canadian-produced original space drama ASCENSION,  premiering November 25.

CBC Television kicks-off its fall season with brand new episodes of its flagship daytime lifestyle series STEVEN AND CHRIS, every Monday through Friday at  2 p.m. (2:30 NT) beginning Sept. 22. In primetime it all starts with the season eight premiere of long-running family drama HEARTLAND and the return of popular series MURDOCH MYSTERIES, THE RICK MERCER REPORT, THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES, DRAGONS’ DEN, REPUBLIC OF DOYLE, THE NATURE OF THINGS, DOC ZONE, MARKETPLACE andthe fifth estate.

TSN launches five national feeds

Beginning today, sports fans can access TSN’s newly expanded lineup of five national feeds with the debut of TSN1, TSN2, TSN3, TSN4, and TSN5 across Canada. Sports fans can choose from 300+ hours of live programming across TSN’s new five feeds, as the opening week broadcast schedule features the US OPEN, CFL, BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE, NCAA College Football, auto racing, and more.

TSN begins airing live coverage across its new feeds today at 10:30 a.m. ET with a 30-minute US OPEN preview show on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, and TSN5. Live from the TSN Studio, host Rod Smith breaks down how TSN’s new feeds give fans the choice of four different US OPEN matches airing at the same time beginning today at 11 a.m. ET.

“We’re thrilled to bring fans more sports and more choice than ever before,” said Shawn Redmond, Vice-President of Programming and Marketing, TSN. “This week alone, fans can choose from more than 300 hours of live programming across TSN – and it all starts today, with our new feeds featuring three Canadian tennis players on the first day of the US OPEN. This is an exciting day for sports fans and an historic day for TSN.”

Programming Highlights

  • Live daytime and primetime coverage of four different matches from the US OPEN, including expanded coverage of Canadian players and encore presentations of the day’s biggest matches
  • A must-see BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE clash between defending champion Manchester City and runner-up Liverpool
  • A brand-new season of OFF THE RECORD WITH MICHAEL LANDSBERG
  • The reveal of this year’s Kraft Celebration Tour grand prize winner of $100,000 in total, announced live on the 6 p.m. ET edition of SPORTSCENTRE
  • A MONDAY NIGHT BASEBALL matchup between the New York Yankees @ Kansas City, followed by OLBERMANN PRESENTS PETE ROSE: 25 YEARS IN EXILE, an hour-long special marking the 25th anniversary of Pete Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball

TVO’s Opie takes the fear out of kindergarten

Kindergarten can be a scary place for children. For most, kindergarten is the first time that five-year-olds are away from their parents and home for an extended period of time. It can be an unfamiliar place filled with strangers and loud noises.

That’s where Opie comes in. Created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Opie is the five-year-old puppet star of Hi Opie! a 39-episode series targeted at kids aged three to five that introduces them to the world of kindergarten and all that comes with it. Brightly-coloured and with a shock of yarn-like hair, Opie is a friendly fellow who interacts with young co-stars who immediately accept the puppet as a real character.

“It’s the power of a puppet who is designed in a particular way to get the attention of a child and make them feel comfortable,” says Pat Ellingson, creative Head of Children’s & Parents’ Media for TVO. “And a puppeteer [in Jordan Lockhart] who is able to make them take that leap of faith that this is a real character.”

Developed in partnership with TVO and produced by marblemedia in association with The Jim Henson Company, Hi Opie! aims to entertain as well as educate families as their little ones prepare for full-time kindergarten, something Ellingson explains was an important part of developing the series. Math, science, social skills, patience, teamwork and interaction with peers and teachers are all addressed in upcoming instalments. Ellingson says Hi Opie! has a three-pronged message aimed at children about to start full-day kindergarten, parents new to the environment and for children already in the program.

TVO is offering a sneak peek of Hi Opie! on Monday, Aug. 25, at 7 a.m. and noon ET, and Friday, Aug. 29, at 7 a.m. ET.

Meanwhile, Opie took some time out from his school preparations to answer a few questions from us:

Opie, are you excited to go into kindergarten, or are you a little nervous?
I’m really excited to start kindergarten! I can’t wait to meet new friends and play games. Doing crafts and playing with dinosaurs are my favourite.

If you are nervous, what are you nervous about?
I’m a little nervous … I’ve never been to school before and the school is really big!

What do you think your favourite part about going to school every day will be? Is it learning? Seeing your friends? Snack time?
I can’t wait to meet new friends.

What would you say to any kids that are nervous about going to kindergarten for the first time? What would you tell their parents?
I’m practicing how to introduce myself so when I meet new friends I’m going to say, ‘Hi, my name is Opie. What’s yours?’ I’ve also been practicing packing my backpack with my lunch, favourite toy and an extra change of clothes. I’m going to pack these on the first day.

City unveils Bachelor Season 2 bachelorettes
