In the news: Geminis tonight

From Alex Strachan of Canwest News Service:

  • Adding insult to artistic injury, networks take a pass on Geminis
“Tonight offers a rare occasion to sing the praises of our nation’s culture. Canadian-born actor-turned-director Jason Priestley hosts the 23rd Annual Gemini Awards, TV’s answer to the Genies. This year, there were some 96 categories in all — but don’t worry, only 14 are being presented today.” Read more.

From Brian Gorman of Zap2It:

  • Canadian TV awards a modest affair
“Canada’s Gemini Awards for the television industry have never been what you might call a high-profile event for the general public. This year, the people behind them are trying a new broadcast strategy, which you could call the preaching-to-the-converted approach.” Read more.

Defying Gravity ‘sexy, dramatic, accessible’

From John Doyle of the Globe and Mail:

  • Grey’s Anatomy in space? What a relief
“But Defying Gravity is going to employ some talent. The 13-episode series – called “science-fact, not science-fiction drama” by one of its producers – is a fascinating production, not only because of the premise, but because it’s a creature of the new economic reality in the TV industry.” Read more.

Canwest announces new pilot

From a media release:

Building on the drama pilot slate announced last month, Canwest announced a fifth commission today.

Joining forces with acclaimed Canadian show runner Andrew Wreggitt (Mayerthorpe, Shades of Black, One Dead Indian), are producers Virginia Thompson and Robert de Lint of Vérité Films (Corner Gas), and Jeff Beesley (Borderline Normal); Canwest has commissioned the one hour pilot The Dealership.

The Dealership is a darkly funny, one-hour drama series about the dysfunctional world of Harrison Luxury Auto Gallery, a family-owned used-car dealership. Market collapse, credit crisis, the shrinking global economy – everything is conspiring against Rachel, Jack and Frank Harrison. But this main street family isn’t going down without a fight and will do whatever it takes to make the sale and live for another day.

“Andrew Wreggitt’s script is simply one of the most original we have seen” said Christine Shipton, SVP Dramatic and Factual Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “Adding to that, the team of Virginia, Robert and Jeff? It was a very easy call for us and we cannot wait to get started.”

Casting, Directing and additional production development announcements will be made shortly.
