CBC TELEVISION ANNOUNCES 21 RENEWALS, EXPANDED SEASONS OF HIT SHOWS, AND NEW TITLES FOR 2013-14

CBC Television, currently in year two of a three-year plan to manage funding cuts, today confirmed a number of new and returning shows for 2013-14, including a brand new season of BATTLE OF THE BLADES, expanded (full) seasons of MURDOCH MYSTERIES and REPUBLIC OF DOYLE, a mini-series based on the award-winning Canadian novel THE BEST LAID PLANS (PDM Entertainment), and a television movie adaptation of THE BOOK OF NEGROES (Conquering Lion Pictures).

The following favorites have been renewed and will return to the programming schedule:

Bo, Dyson and Kenzi go undercover at an urban camp to catch a serial killer Fae who preys on at-risk youth. Meanwhile, a blast from Tamsin’s past makes an appearance, but the visit may not be purely social. Bo is given some hard to accept emotional news.

Heartland, CBC – “Born to Buck”
Amy is having trouble dealing with a roping horse that only wants to buck and Caleb, who isn’t sure he wants to ride broncs anymore.

Dragons’ Den, CBC
An entrepreneur serves up a snack fit for a king; an artist hopes her body of work will win over the Dragons; and a food entrepreneur hopes to bag a deal. Plus; a Guinness World Record holder attempts to escape the Den with investment.

Republic of Doyle, CBC – “Multitasking”
Jake finds himself juggling multiple cases while looking into attempts made on the life of his ex-girlfriend; Tinny’s relationship with her Uncle Jake is becoming strained due to her budding relationship with her father.

Lost Girl, Showcase – “There’s Bo Place Like Home”
Bo faces the daunting task of having to return to where it all started: down home on the farm. Accompanied by BFF Kenzi, Bo must face her old demons – and a new one – in order to clear the way for the path she will soon be forced to travel.

Motive, CTV – “Against All Odds”
A high-priced lawyer is discovered murdered in his home, the apparent victim of a burglary gone awry. A million dollar life insurance policy payout gives the victim’s wife motive, but Flynn (Kristin Lehman) is not biting. While she works the case, her son Manny (Cameron Bright) is arrested for vandalism, forcing her to apply some tough love on the home front.

Vikings, History – series premiere
While Vikings is filled with conflict, warfare and bloodshed – for these were extreme times – it is a family saga at heart. It follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel, The Beast), a curious, compelling man who is always looking to break through barriers and discover new worlds to conquer. A young farmer and family man, Ragnar is deeply frustrated by the unadventurous policies of his local chieftain, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment). Vikings charts Ragnar’s ambitions to discover civilizations across the great ocean to the west, as well as his inevitable conflicts along the way. With the help of his jester friend Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard, The Way Back), they build a new generation of boats – faster, sleeker and more beautifully crafted than anything else on the sea.

Heartland , CBC – “After All We’ve Been Through”
To clear his own name, Ty searches for damning evidence to prove Jeremy was behind Buckingham’s death.

Canadian Screen Awards, CBC
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT) unites its film, television and digital media awards into one gala event with the Canadian Screen Awards. Hosting the inaugural live gala is Canada’s king of comedy, Martin Short. The Academy’s new awards are a true showcase of our country’s finest talent in all screen industries in this star-studded celebration.

Each week, audiences continue to tune in to follow their favourite characters, Amy (Amber Marshall), Ty (Graham Wardle), Jack (Shaun Johnston), Tim (Chris Potter), Lou (Michelle Morgan), Peter (Gabriel Hogan) and Georgie (Alisha Newton) as they band together to get through life in both happy and trying times.

Meanwhile, Mallory goes against Tim’s advice and turns to the internet to find romance for Jack.

Motive, CTV – “Out of the Past”
The execution-style murder of a news shop proprietor with high-level military training leads Detectives Flynn (Kristin Lehman) and Vega (Louis Ferreira) to a local gang who are terrorizing the community’s residents. Further investigation reveals that the news shop owner was stalking a respected paediatric doctor and her family, leading Angie to question the doctor’s credentials and to a motive that lies in a secret past that has returned to haunt her.

Lost Girl, Showcase – “The Kenzi Scale”
The gang is forced to stage an intervention against an increasingly erratic Bo. Bo believes the only way to save someone close to her is to accept help from the person she trusts the least.

Heartland, CBC – “Lost and Gone Forever”
Ty’s future as a vet is in serious jeopardy when he’s blamed for a shocking fatality at Scott’s clinic.

Dragons’ Den, CBC
A baby product prevents a big mess in the Den; an energy idea needs Dragon dollars to help it grow; and the Dragons are given a few words of encouragement. Plus; a handy entrepreneur hopes to lock in a deal.

Republic of Doyle, CBC – “The Common Wealth”
