Tassie Cameron is a Gemini and Canadian Screen Award-winning screenwriter, who has written for television series, MOWs, mini-series, and feature films.

Cameron is currently the showrunner and executive producer on Global’s upcoming six-part series, Mary Kills People (under her new production company, Cameron Pictures, in partnership with eOne). She is also an executive producer on Global’s Private Eyes, Jason Priestley’s new hit P.I. series. Cameron was the co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner on the hit series, Rookie Blue which ran for seven seasons on Global and ABC.

Co-executive producer on the first season of Flashpoint, Cameron’s other credits include The Robber Bride, Would Be Kings, The Eleventh Hour, Degrassi: The Next Generation and Tom Stone.

Tara Armstrong is a recent graduate from UBC’s Creative Writing Program and the Canadian Film Centre Prime Time TV Program. Since graduating, Tara has written for Global’s television series Private Eyes which premiered on Global in summer of 2016, and Showcase’s Travelers.

A graduate of the Canadian Film Centre Prime Time Television program, Marsha Greene also has an Honours BA in Creative Writing from York University, and a graduate certificate from Humber College’s TV Writing and Producing program, where she was won the Brian Linehan Award for Outstanding Artistic Promise.

Marsha has lent her skills to scripted and unscripted productions for Global, CBC, Discovery Channel and Food Network. She was the Interactive Writer for the YTV/Teen Nick mystery-drama Open Heart. Marsha was a story editor on Global’s Remedy and Private Eyes, and a co-producer on Mary Kills People.

Photo gallery: First-look photos of Global’s Mary Kills People

We’ve been jazzed about the Season 1 debut of Mary Kills People since we visited the set a few months ago. Now, not only has Global revealed the drama series debuts Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, but they’ve released a handful of images too.

Executive-produced by Tassie Cameron, Amy Cameron, Tecca Crosby and Holly Dale and co-executive producer Tara Armstrong, Global describes the series thusly:

Set in the morally grey world of assisted suicide, Mary Kills People is an intense, controversial, and thought-provoking drama.  The series follows Dr. Mary Harris (Caroline Dhavernas), a single mother and emergency doctor by day, who also moonlights as an underground angel of death — helping terminally ill patients who want to die and slip away on their own terms. So far Mary has managed to stay under the radar; but business is booming, and her double life is getting complicated.  When her world starts to unravel, Mary realizes she’s going to have to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game.

Additional cast includes Jay Ryan as Joel, one of Mary’s terminally ill clients; Richard Short as Des, Mary’s trusted partner in crime; Lyriq Bent as Frank, Joel’s friend; Greg Bryk as Grady, Mary’s drug supplier; Abigail Winters as Mary’s teen daughter; and Charlotte Sullivan as Nicole, Mary’s concerned sister.

Global reveals Mary Kills People’s midseason debut

Coming off of a highly successful fall season with three of the top five new fall series, Global rings in 2017 with a robust midseason primetime lineup. The network heads into the winter season with a schedule packed with Canada’s most-watched programming including this season’s most-anticipated new and returning series.

Kicking off the New Year are two new Canadian original drama series. Inspired by the professional experiences of distinguished crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert, comes Ransom, a high stakes suspense drama premiering on Sunday, January 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on Global. Starring Luke Roberts (Wolf Hall, Game of Thrones), as Eric Beaumont, a crisis and hostage negotiator whose team is brought in to save lives when no one else can, the series moves to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT starting January 4 and Saturdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT beginning January 7.

Then, Global’s compelling, new character-driven drama Mary Kills People joins the schedule Wednesday, January 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Set in the morally grey world of assisted death, the special six-part event series stars Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal) as Dr. Mary Harris, an overworked single mother and ER doctor, who also moonlights as an underground angel of death – working outside the law to help her patients slip away on their own terms.

Production begins on Global’s original drama Mary Kills People

Leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne) and newly minted Cameron Pictures Inc., alongside Canadian broadcast and production partner Corus are pleased to announce that principal photography has begun on Mary Kills People, the provocative new Global original series starring Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal, Off The Map, Wonderfalls). Created by Tara Armstrong, Mary Kills People is executive produced by Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue, Flashpoint, The Robber Bride). Directing the series is award-winning Holly Dale, whose previous credits include The Americans, Dexter, Castle and the critically acclaimed series Durham County. 

The six-part one-hour drama shoots in and around Toronto through the summer and is set to premiere on Global in Canada in early 2017.

Also announced today are additional cast members joining Dhavernas in the series. Jay Ryan (Top of the Lake,Beauty and the Beast) has been cast as Joel, one of Mary’s terminally ill clients, but a mutual attraction blurs the lines of their doctor-patient relationship, while Richard Short (Vinyl, 666 Park Avenue) has joined as Des, Mary’s trusted partner in crime. Rounding out the cast is Lyriq Bent (Book of Negroes, Rookie Blue) as Frank, Joel’s friend who worries he’s getting in too deep with Dr. Death, Greg Bryk (Bitten, A History of Violence) as Grady, Mary’s drug supplier, Abigail Winters (Between, Saving Hope, Rookie Blue) as Mary’s teen daughter who learns that the people closest to her are not what they seem and Charlotte Sullivan (Rookie Blue) as Nicole, Mary’s concerned sister.

Mary Kills People is produced by eOne and Cameron Pictures Inc., in association with Corus Entertainment, and with the financial participation of the Canada Media Fund, the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit. eOne handles international distribution for the series. The series is executive produced by Tassie Cameron, Amy Cameron, Tecca Crosby and Holly Dale. Tara Armstrong is Co-Executive Producer. Tashi Bieler serves as the Executive in Charge of Production for eOne and Norman Denver is Producer.

Corus announces Global and specialty schedules

The media releases from Corus today make me fear for their advanced caffeination levels and I can’t bring myself to print them verbatim but among the Canadian series news are these tidbits with the superlative adjectives edited out:

Global

Ransom – As announced yesterday, Global, together with TF1 France, green lit new original suspense drama Ransom, starring Luke Roberts (Black Sails, Game of Thrones), with CBS joining as a broadcast partner for the series. Production on Ransom will begin later this summer.

Mary Kills People – Also in production this summer, Global’s new original drama Mary Kills People has cast Caroline Dhavernas(Hannibal) as the series lead. The six-episode series follows Dr. Mary Harris (Dhavernas), a single mother and emergency doctor, who also moonlights as an underground angel of death – helping terminally ill patients who want to die slip away on their own terms. So far Mary has managed to stay under the radar; but her double life gets complicated when the police start to close in, forcing Mary to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game.

Big Brother Canada – After its most successful season yet, with an average audience of almost 1.2 million viewers per episode (2+) – growing audiences with total viewers and key demos A18-49 and A25-54 versus Season 3, Big Brother Canada, returns for a fifth season of competing, scheming, and household chaos. Based on Endemol Shine Group’s worldwide franchise and commissioned by Corus Entertainment Inc., Season 5 of Big Brother Canada is produced by Insight Productions in association with Corus Entertainment Inc.

Specialty Top Chef Canada from Food Network Canada makes its return with an All-Stars edition slated for early 2017. Real Housewives of Toronto promises an intimate look at the luxurious lives of the city’s wealthiest women, from their extravagant day-to-day escapades in Toronto to grandiose getaways at their exclusive colossal cottages in Muskoka, Canada’s playground for the rich and famous. A different kind of haute couture continues in the new Slice™ original Style Factory with a behind-the-scenes look at how fashion and beauty products are made. W Network is set to launch the first ever version of The Bachelorette Canada this fall. Bryan Baeumler, Scott McGillivray, and Mike Holmes all return to HGTV Canadawith new series this fall. Bryan Inc., Moving the McGillivrays, and Holmes and Holmes each give a deeper look into the personal and professional lives of the network’s biggest stars.

HISTORY treks north to Edmonton International Airport in the new, original series Airport: Below Zero. The series takes Canadians behind-the-scenes at North America’s most northerly big city airport. Joining HISTORY in Spring 2017, a team of crack investigators search for billions of dollars worth of treasures stolen by the Nazis in Nazi Treasure Hunters. Finally, CMT (Canada) brings host Billy Bretherton north of the 49th parallel in the original series Billy Goes North. The series chronicles Billy’s adventure with Canadian pests, critters, and gnarly animals other exterminators can’t handle alone.
