Preview: Scott McGillivray puts his money on the line in HGTV’s Buyers Bootcamp

Scott McGillivray has made a career out of buying houses, renovating and then reselling them. Through his longrunning Income Property, McGillivray has renovated properties for homeowners so they could bring in money to help them offset their mortgages and other bills.

Now McGillivray puts his own money into properties alongside first-time house flippers in hopes their combined sweat equity pays off bigtime.

That certainly adds an amount of personal drama to the 10-episode run of Buyers Bootcamp with Scott McGillivray, debuting this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada. The affable investment property specialist is at his TV best when he’s swinging a sledgehammer at walls, having bugs rain down into his perfect hair and dispensing quips with potential homeowners. There is certainly a lot of that in Buyers Bootcamp, along with a treasure trove of information for viewers who might be interested in taking some notes from the man.

There is a whiff of reality show to Buyers Bootcamp, as McGillivray—in each episode—meets with two property owners and assesses the viability of each before choosing just one to throw his knowledge, team and money into. First up are Craig and Lindsay, a young couple hoping to turn their 1878 Victorian home purchase into a big bag of cash. Stunning tin ceilings and original wood floors are definitely selling points but evidence of water damage and a specialty market for the size of the house are worries. Next are brothers Kenson and Charles, and their multi-level duplex. A beaten-up main floor and moss growing in the bathroom have McGillivray worried, but the second floor shows more promise as does the siblings’ expansion plans in the backyard.

What really sets Buyers Bootcamp apart from other McGillivray projects are his homeowner co-stars. It’s up to them to not only pitch their properties to the veteran flipper but themselves too. This is going to be a partnership, so they have to sell their enthusiasm and vision in hopes he jumps on board.

After ruminating on the risks and payoffs to both properties, McGillivray makes his decision and the real work begins. Gutting rooms, taking down walls and peeling up floors always reveals unwanted or exciting surprises and Sunday’s debut is no different. But thanks to some generous friends and luck no major costs throw off the budget. The final reveal is simply stunning.

If you’re already a fan of McGillivray you’re going to love Buyers Bootcamp. If you’re not, but are thinking that house flipping might be in your future, tune in. The man has made a living doing this and you can learn a lot from watching him work both on and off the work site.

Buyers Bootcamp with Scott McGillivray airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada.

Scott McGillivray goes On Vacation with Income Property

You know what you’re going to get when you tune in to Income Property. Not only will Scott McGillivray entertain as he renovates a couple’s home, but he educates folks on how to make the most money out of their investments. It’s a formula that’s worked for 10 seasons on HGTV and I’m frankly surprised it’s taken this long for a spinoff.

Debuting Wednesday with two back-to-back episodes, Income Property: On Vacation is exactly what it sounds like as McGillivray leaves the big city in his rear-view mirror to aid people in adding value to their vacation properties. In the first, McGillivray helps musician Justin Rutledge turn the lakeside shack on his in Prince Edward County land into a money-maker. It isn’t easy, but then anything McGillivray tackles rarely is. Wall-to-wall wood paneling, outdated appliances, a burgeoning mouse and raccoon population, black mould, expired avians and moisture throughout has Justin stressed, but the flop-haired contractor sees lots of potential.

After checking with local building codes, McGillivray—as he does with Income Property—presents Rutledge with two renovation options. I always get a kick out of McGillivray’s reactions to things as the demotion portion of the project gets underway and Wednesday’s debut of On Vacation is no exception. Let’s just say some questionable wiring leads to a funny scene in the old shower. Then, after days painting, rerouting plumbing, replacing rotting floors and intense renos, Rutledge’s new cabin is ready to hit the market, and bring in a tidy little profit for the singer-songwriter too.

Watching the team work to the proposed plan is fun and informative, but I constantly wonder why this series isn’t made up of hour-long episodes. Until that happens, I’ll have to be content with Income Property and this great spinoff, On Vacation.

Income Property: On Vacation airs Wednesdays at 10 and 10:30 p.m. ET on HGTV Canada.

Scott McGillivray takes control of his Property

Scott McGillivray has built an empire with a handful of shows surrounding home renovation and property investment. Now he’s adding another segment to his realm with his own production company, McGillivray Entertainment. The longtime host of Income Property figures this was the natural evolution of his brand. After increasing involvement in the HGTV hit—he’s been an executive producer for the last four seasons—McGillivray decided to start McGillivray Entertainment not only to manage new projects starring himself, but fostering new talent as well.

“You become this conduit,” he says from behind the wheel of his truck. “I’ve got this great group of talented individuals that I’ve been working with and there are a lot of possible opportunities. I’m always looking to fill that opportunity gap. When you have a brand, and a branding team and you have sponsors, it’s a lot easier to get a show. And when you have your own production company, it’s easier to spin that out to people as well.” McGillivray has already got two projects put to pilot by HGTV in the U.S. and a third project in development. And while that trio is still in the beginning stages, McGillivray Entertainment’s first series is already filming.

“It’s not the Kardashians.”

Moving the McGillivrays—set to air in 2016 on HGTV Canada—spotlights Scott, wife Sabrina and daughters Myah and Layla as they not only build a dream home for themselves but he constructs a home for a family in need. Cameras are currently rolling on Episode 2 of the 10-parter. Die-hard fans of McGillivray can get a regular dose of Sabrina and kids via his YouTube series Good to Grow, but a television show is a totally different beast. Just ask Bryan Baeumler’s wife, Sarah, who has acquired a fair number of detractors who don’t like the way she acts in the House of Bryan series.

“Sabrina has been hands-off on the television thing since Day 1,” he says with a laugh. “We’ve been in our current house for eight years and have seen a lot of change during that time with having kids. I said, ‘We could make a show about this!’ and she said, ‘Please don’t.'” She relented, but McGillivray stresses Moving the McGillivrays will be authentic and show who his family really is (“It’s not the Kardashians,” he says.). McGillivray notes anything he posts showing his private life garners a lot of attention from fans, so the project is a logical move. And with the success of series like Income Property, All American Handyman, Canada’s Handyman Challenge and Holiday Battle on the Block, his popularity doesn’t show any signs of erosion.

Next up following Moving the McGillivrays is a full season of Income Property: On Vacation. Something he’s been wanting to feature in the mothership series for ages, On Vacation shows people who own getaways how to make a buck from them.

“I grew up with a cottage and you’re just a different person when you’re there,” he says. “Even if you’re working, it’s not the same as being in a basement in the city during a snowstorm.”
