Every president of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation faces challenges, but Lacroix’s tenure was unusually crisis-filled, from a series of budget and staff cuts (in 2009, 2012 and 2014, totalling about 1,900 jobs); the loss of the NHL broadcasting contract; the Ghomeshi scandal and the ensuing revelations of a toxic workplace culture designed to placate hosts; and a conflagration within the human-resources department which sparked a series of lawsuits by former employees. Kew Media Group has acquired the Toronto-based producer Sienna Films, which is behind such scripted hits as Cardinal.

Sienna has a roster of scripted television series that includes Cardinal, which is now in production on seasons two and three and has aired on CTV in Canada, Hulu in the U.S. and BBC4 in the U.K.; Ransom, now in production on season two and has aired on Global Television in Canada and CBS in the U.S.; and Combat Hospital, for Global Television in Canada and ABC in the U.S. There’s also Diamonds, for CBC in Canada and ABC in the U.S. Continue reading.

Canadian film and TV leaders are acknowledging that sexual harassment has also been a “prevalent” part of the entertainment industry north of the border and have planned a meeting to discuss how to tackle it.

In the wake of the flood of allegations against fallen Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, writer-director James Toback and others, the union representing Canadian actors, ACTRA, has had preliminary meetings with industry groups and is preparing for a broader meeting of stakeholders on Nov. 23 in Toronto. 2017 Directors Guild of Canada awards winners announced

The DGC is delighted to announce the winners of the 2017 DGC Awards. There were over 300 submissions this year in both film and television from across the country. 

The Awards were presented at the annual event on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the historic Carlu in Toronto. Hosted by Mary Walsh, the evening was punctuated by special presentations to director Don Shebib and Quebec DGC Member Anne Sirois. The presenters for the evening were all female directors working in the industry today and represent the diverse voices at work in Canada. 

The 2017 DGC Discovery Award was presented to emerging filmmaker Wayne Mapeemukwa for his film Luk’Luk’ I. His film was selected by a jury of filmmakers:   Stephen Dunn, Chloé Leriche, Kevan Funk, Johnny Ma and Ashley McKenzie.
