All hail Queen Paras, winner of Big Brother Canada Season 6

In an epic battle of good versus evil, it all came down to the last two women standing in the Big Brother Canada Season 6 finale, as Paras Atashnak of Vancouver, BC, claimed the final prize. Following a season that saw 16 houseguests face the depths of hell and the peaks of paradise, social gamer Paras and comp beast Kaela Grant faced off on BBCAN judgement day, with Paras winning in a landslide vote of six to one.

As the winner of #BBCAN6, Paras sits on cloud nine with a grand prize of $100,000, a European dream vacation for two courtesy of Air Transat, and a $30,000 home furnishing makeover from The Brick.

On her big win, Paras said: “I can’t put it into words! I’ve been a fan of the Big Brother franchise since I was 11 years old. I’ve been watching this show [Big Brother Canada] for five years. I dreamt of it every single day, and to be standing here is such a dream come true. Thank you Big Brother Canada for giving me a chance.”

In the first of three gruelling HOH competitions, Paras, Kaela and Derek faced off in a battle of strength and precision as they collected and stacked three sets of 20 coins on a revolving altar. After multiple failed attempts by each houseguest, Paras defeated comp beasts Daela to take the first win.

Then, in the next round, Derek and Kaela had the ultimate showmance showdown in a challenge where they had to build a staircase of blocks by matching photos of houseguests with clues about their respective games. Kaela edged out Derek with a faster time and sealed her place in the final HOH challenge.

In the last round, Paras and Kaela competed for the last HOH of the season and a spot in the final two. After a heart-pounding trivia challenge, Paras beat Kaela in a sudden death match taking the all-important HOH. With the win in hand, Paras evicted Derek, cementing the first all-female final two in BBCAN history.

As their game came to a close, Paras and Kaela made their heated pleas to the seven-person jury, answering questions about their game play, strategy and why they each deserved to win. Following passionate speeches from both, the jury voted six to one, crowing Paras the winner of Big Brother Canada.

Global announces 14 houseguests for Season 6 of Big Brother Canada

Following last night’s hell of a twist, Global is revealing the remaining 14 new houseguests entering the gates of the Big Brother Canada house on Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. ET/PT. The Season 6 houseguests will feel like they’re walking on cloud nine upon arrival, but dark and fiery twists could be around the corner for some unlucky surprises.

This season’s cast includes a variety of angelic and devilish characters hailing from coast to coast, including a self-proclaimed fiery Latina from Vancouver; a business-minded socialite by day and party planner by night from Saskatoon; a type-A beauty who’s not afraid to speak her mind from Guelph; a self-professed “troll” and super-fan from Calgary; an athletic wine ambassador from Saint John; and a softy single dad oil rig worker from Trepassey, Newfoundland.

With this season’s houseguest revealed, fans will need to choose wisely among the four gate crashers vying for a spot in the house. About: A self-proclaimed fiery Latina with humble beginnings, Ali is a strong, self-made woman who is ready to crush the competition but still make some authentic connections along the way.

Andrew Miller
Age: 36

Occupation: Small business owner
About: A big man with an even bigger personality, Andrew knows he won’t be able to blend into the background, but he’s confident his athletic prowess and sharp mind can take down the competition.

Derek Kesseler
Age: 27
Hometown: Beaumont, AB
Occupation: Clothing brand owner and server/bartender
About: It’s easy to spot Derek’s resemblance to heart-throb actor Zac Efron, and he’s hoping to use that and his authentic charisma to draw in unwavering alliances…and most likely a steamy showmance that is sure to fog up a screen or two.

Cameras rolling on Mr. D Season 6 in Halifax

Principal photography on Season 6 (10 x 30) of Mr. D – the popular CBC series starring comedian Gerry Dee – is now under way in Halifax. The new season will premiere this fall. 

Exploring the staff and student dynamics at a private school, Mr. D is based on the stand-up comedy act of Dee, who was a teacher for nine years before transitioning to a career in comedy. The series revolves around the eponymous Mr. D, an under-qualified and unmotivated teacher trying to fake his way through work – and life. 

The current season picks up from the hilarious Season 5 finale, in which Gerry and principal Lisa Mason (Lauren Hammersley) got hitched in a drunken haze following a disastrous fun fair at the elite day school.  

Season 6 storylines include Gerry teaching in a prison to earn extra cash; Robert (Jonathan Torrens) fulfilling a few of his lifelong dreams; and Simon (Mark Little) and Nisha (new principle cast member Emma Hunter) slowly exploring their complicated relationship.  

Mr. D also stars Bette MacDonald (Trudy), Naomi Snieckus (Bobbi), Darrin Rose (Bill), Wes Williams (Paul), Suresh John (Malik), Kathleen Phillips (Emma), and Bill Wood (Frank). Guest stars this season will once again include Youtube sensation Madison Tevlin, reprising her role as feisty Ricki, and other surprise guests to be announced later. 

As well, Sandra Rogers, the winner of CBC’s Mr. D Favourite Teacher Contest, will be heading to Halifax for a walk-on role later this summer. A teacher-librarian at Garth Webb Secondary School in Oakville, ON, Rogers was nominated by one of her students, 15-year-old Ishmam Tanveer. 

Mr. D is produced by Topsail Productions Limited and Gerard ADHD Entertainment Inc., in association with CBC, and is distributed worldwide by Entertainment One Television International Ltd. The series shoots in studio and on location in and around Halifax until mid-August.
