TV,eh? What's up in Canadian television

In the news: Ratings and other lies

John Doyle of the Globe and Mail writes not specifically about Canadian television, but a reminder that ratings – especially here – can be deceptive:

  • Lies, damned lies, and viewership statistics
“My point, and I do have one today, is that statistics lie, just as people do. Nobody is going broke in the TV racket. Viewers are not abandoning TV in droves. They’re watching what they want, when they want or when they can get to it, just like me. And I’m not special. Ask anyone.”

In the news: No Opportunity Wasted interviews

From Alex Strachan of CanWest:

  • TV opportunity knocks
“To hear Phil Keoghan tell it, No Opportunity Wasted is about making the most of every moment, about taking off your suit and/or tie — ‘and maybe a lot more while you’re at it’ — and swerving off that predictable road you’ve been travelling all these years onto a strange and bumpy path, ‘that just might, with a bit of luck, get you lost.’ Not that Keoghan advocates becoming lost as a life philosophy. It’s just that, after a close brush with death while scuba diving off a shipwreck when he was just 19, he decided not just to live life to its fullest, but to encourage others to do the same.”

From the Montreal Gazette:

  • Make the leap
“‘Making a list gives you focus,’ Keoghan said during a telephone interview. ‘I hear ‘maybe one day’ so much. I say, why wait until the kids finish college? The older you get the more set in your ways you become and you fear failure. It’s good to push beyond that fear.'”

In the news: Paul Coffey on Rent-a-Goalie

From the Toronto Star (only the introduction is about the TV show):

  • Brewing in the daily grind
Coffey is on the set of Rent-A-Goalie, the Showcase comedy series which has featured former NHL greats like Phil Esposito and Darryl Sittler. The hall of fame defenceman is playing a businessman, not a stretch considering his real-life job these days as the owner of car dealerships in Kitchener and Bolton while living in Toronto with his wife and two children.”
