Link: Rookie Blue’s Erin Karpluk eyes a happy ending

From Bridget Liszewski of The TV Junkies:

Rookie Blue’s Erin Karpluk eyes a happy ending
Being the new kid on the block is not something Erin Karpluk was used to during her four seasons starring on Being Erica. However, this season she’s had to jump on board the well-oiled machine that is Rookie Blue as Officer Juliet Ward, 15 Division’s newest cop who also had a pretty big secret that she was keeping. While such a situation may lend itself to some pitfalls, in reality “it was one of the easiest transitions into a show I’ve ever had,” Karpluk tells The TV Junkies. Continue reading.

The Romeo Section rolls into production

Sounds like something I’ll like to watch as I like the premise and cast. Both of CBC’s new fall drama series sound great but I’m a tad worried about The Romeo Section’s timeslot—Thursday is such a packed night. —Alicia

The Amazing Race Canada roars out of the gate

I enjoyed the premiere. It was really surprising/fun to have the team that currently lives in Toronto not know what TSN was, plus another team with a rather lacklustre water Roadblock performance still managed to get 3rd and 2nd place respectively. Duthie’s face while they fumbled the script was good too.

With this and Big Brother Canada going strong, I wonder why we have’t had a Survivor Canada yet? But then I realize we don’t really have a good place to play it. Putting people in Nunavut is isolated enough but they’d always be huddled around a fire and if the crew tried to place a Hidden Immunity Idol the players could just follow the footprints in the snow. —Dan

Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, Degrassi nominated for Primetime Emmys

Congratulations to Tatiana Maslany, who was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her extensive work on Orphan Black.

“#CloneClub & #clonesbians, this bud’s for you. Thanks buddies :)” Maslany tweeted to her 207,000 followers minutes after the nominations were announced for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Maslany plays Leda clones Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Helena, Rachel and Krystal on Space’s sci-fi series, which just wrapped up its third season. (One could argue Maslany should have a category all her own, but how would we choose a favourite clone!?!) She faces off against Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Claire Danes (Homeland), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) in the category.

The Saskatchewan native was nominated for a Golden Globe for Orphan Black, and has won a Canadian Screen Award, two Critics’ Choice Awards and a Gemini Award for the roles.

Meanwhile, Degrassi garnered a nomination in the Outstanding Children’s Program category. The long-running drama, which is jumping from MTV Canada to Family Channel for 2016, is nominated alongside Alan Alda and The Actor Within You, Dog with a Blog, Girl Meets World and Nick News with Linda Ellerbee.

Calgary’s Semi Chellas was nominated for her fifth Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series on Mad Men and Edmonton’s Michael J. Fox received an Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for The Good Wife. Jeff and Mychael Danna are nominated for two awards for music for an episode of Tyrant and Jeremy Podeswa is up for a directing award for his work on Game of Thrones. Jonathan and Drew Scott received a nomination in Outstanding Structured Reality Program for Property Brothers.

Here’s a complete list of the Primetime Emmy nominations.

Production begins on Season 2 of CBC’s X Company

From a media release:

CBC and Temple Street Productions announce the start of production on season 2 of original series  X Company, an emotionally driven adventure drama set in the thrilling and dangerous world of WWII espionage and covert operations. Returning this season is the international ensemble cast including Evelyne Brochu, Jack Laskey, Hugh Dillon, Warren Brown, Dustin Milligan, Connor Price and Lara Jean Chorostecki. Season 1 of X Company premiered on CBC Television February 18, 2015 to more than one million viewers.

Season 2 begins with the team on the ground in German-occupied France, two men down, virtually cut off from all communications with Camp X. Tom (Dustin Milligan) has been shot, leaving Aurora (Evelyne Brochu), Neil (Warren Brown) and Harry (Connor Price) to deal with the chaotic aftermath of Alfred (Jack Laskey) being captured by the Gestapo.

The team is reeling, scrambling to recover. Aurora is devastated by Alfred’s capture, Harry blames himself for exposing the entire team to an enemy agent, Neil’s ability to fight is compromised by having to kill a German friend and Tom’s life is hanging in the balance. Alfred, with his perfect memory, was always a perfect target for the Germans, and was never supposed to be taken alive. Why didn’t Aurora take the shot when she had the chance? Meanwhile, back at Camp X, Sinclair (Hugh Dillon) realizes he’ll have to take unprecedented risks to get Alfred out before he breaks under torture. And Krystina (Lara Jean Chorostecki), fighting to control the damage, learns that the timing could not be worse: the Allies are depending on their secret agents to help lay the groundwork for an invasion of Occupied France.

Season 2’s 10-episode, one-hour drama shoots on location in Budapest, Hungary until November 2015, and is set to air on CBC in early 2016.

Review: The Amazing Race heats up in Chile

Having a specialized skill can really help during the marathon that is The Amazing Race Canada. That was certainly the case for Nic and Sabrina and Dujean and Leilani, who might have found themselves at the back of the pack if not for knowledge they brought into the Race.

Dujean and Leilani seemed destined for a total meltdown during the show’s second Leg in Santiago, Chile, when the exes resorted to screaming at each other while attempting to locate five specific outdoor paintings and take selfies in front of them. I admit I’d have lost my cool if someone kept yelling, “Come on, come on, come on,” at me like Dujean did, but deciding to just stop running in protest à la Leilani? Not cool. The pair were lucky the Motion part of Wednesday’s Detour involved dancing, something they both grew up doing. The result? A fifth place finish.

Nic and Sabrina’s prior skill set came into play as well. Their knowledge of language—something host Jon Montgomery told me about last week—came into play with everyone they met in Santiago, from cab drivers to the Emotion part of the Detour: reciting a poem by Gabriela Mistral. As Nic said in the cab on the way to the Pit Stop, they banged out that challenge in half an hour. The duo were also cagey during the art-inspired Detour: instead of running around the neighbourhood they used their cab. I wasn’t sure if that was allowed and half expected Montgomery to assess them a time penalty, but it was all good and they finished in fourth place.

The other high point of the second Leg was the revelation the Express Passes were coming into play. Hamilton and Michaelia were the first to complete the Road Block at the community centre and chased down the Express Passes at Patio Bellavista. The engaged couple quickly used their pass at the Motion Detour when Hamilton admitted the dance costumes were too skimpy for his transgender body. At first I was frustrated they’d used the Express Pass so quickly to advance to the Pit Stop at Cerro San Cristobal, but as Michaelia pointed out, other teams would play nice with them to score that second pass. And at least they used the pass, something other duos have failed to do and been eliminated.

Speaking of eliminated teams, Susan and Sharnjit fought to improve on their weak standing last week, but a bad cab driver and getting lost finding the artwork spelled doom … unless it was a non-elimination Leg.

Alas, it was not.

Here’s how the teams finished:

  1. Hamilton and Michaelia (used Express Pass)
  2. Brian and Cynthia
  3. Nick and Matt
  4. Nic and Sabrina
  5. Dujean and Leilani
  6. Neil and Kristin
  7. Dana and Amanda
  8. Brent and Sean
  9. Simi and Ope
  10. Gino and Jesse
  11. Susan and Sharnjit (eliminated)

Notes and quotes

  • Hey TARC producers, how do you decide what time teams will leave on the next leg?
  • “I already feel like I smell like B.O.” — quote of the night from Sean
  • I understand that sponsors need to be given props, but having someone say they’re paying for their flight with their “BMO Cash Back World Elite MasterCard” is still a little over the top.
  • I love it when the local taxi drivers get into the vibe of the Race and want to see their fares do well.

The Amazing Race airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV.
