Original entertainment productions for Bell Media’s English-language services announced

Bell Media confirmed today the new and returning original prime time entertainment series, documentaries, and specials fueling its English-language services and produced in partnership with independent production partners.

Bell Media’s English-language original programming is some of the most watched and most awarded in the country:

  • THE AMAZING RACE CANADA is not only last year’s #1 Canadian series, but also Canada’s most-watched summer program for seven years straight in the A25-54 demo. The fan-favourite series won six 2020 Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Reality/Competition Program or Series.
  • TRANSPLANT quickly became the most-watched Canadian drama during its first season on CTV, while JANN was the #1 new Canadian comedy of 2018-19, and received three 2020 Canadian Screen Award nominations, including Best Comedy Series.
  • CORNER GAS ANIMATED reigned as the #1 series on CTV Comedy Channel last broadcast year and won three 2020 Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Animated Program or Series.
  • Discovery hit DISASTERS AT SEA was named Best Factual Series at the Canadian Screen Awards, while HEAVY RESCUE: 401 is a Top 5 series for the channel among total viewers across all seasons.

Among today’s announcements:

  • CTV announced today along with NBCUniversal International Studios that a Season 2 renewal is underway for TRANSPLANT, the #1 Canadian drama and Top 20 hit from Sphere Media, hot on the heels of NBC’s earlier acquisition of the series’ first season.
  • As well, hit comedy series JANN, starring Jann Arden, has been renewed for Season 3 ahead of its second season premiere this fall on CTV, announced earlier today.
  • The CTV Originals slate also includes the previously confirmed comedy CHILDREN RUIN EVERYTHING from the producers of LETTERKENNY; new paranormal series THE SURREALTOR from the producers of SPINNING OUT and VAGRANT QUEEN; music documentary series THIS IS POP, recounting the most pivotal moments in pop music history; the newly retitled series HOLMES FAMILY EFFECT; and new seasons of CORNER GAS ANIMATED, THE AMAZING RACE CANADA, and WYNONNA EARP, along with the special all-star edition of MASTERCHEF CANADA: BACK TO WIN.
  • In addition to a strong roster of original documentaries (see below), Crave confirmed today that fan-favourite series LETTERKENNY is returning for Season 9.
  • Discovery Networks adds MUD MOUNTAIN HAULERS (working title) from the producers of returning hits HIGHWAY THRU HELL and HEAVY RESCUE 4O1, as well as two additional new series marking a new partnership between fishing adventurer Cyril Chaquet and Discovery. A new season of DISASTERS AT SEA is also set to return.
  • Plus, Bell Media confirms new documentaries BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE: POWER IN THE BLOOD and HOWIE MANDEL: BUT, ENOUGH ABOUT ME, along with new Crave Original documentaries THE NEW CORPORATION, the unfortunately necessary sequel to 2003’s THE CORPORATION; THE GRIZZLY TRUTH about the former NBA team the Vancouver Grizzlies; and INCONVENIENT INDIAN, based on the stinging bestseller by Thomas King.

  • THE SURREALTOR – New Series
    In THE SURREALTOR, realtor Nick Roman and an elite team of specialists handle the cases that no one else can: haunted and possessed houses that literally scare would-be buyers away. Researching, investigating, and “fixing” the things that go bump in the night, the team works to create closure – and closings – even as they struggle with demons of their own.   • TRANSPLANT – Season 2
    A second season renewal is underway for TRANSPLANT, the most-watched Canadian drama. The series will continue to follow Dr. Bashir “Bash” Hamed (Hamza Haq, THE INDIAN DETECTIVE), a Syrian doctor with battle-tested skills in emergency medicine who made the difficult decision to flee his country with his younger sister Amira. Together they build a new life in Canada, as Bash rebuilds his career in medicine at York Memorial Hospital. IMDb TV acquires U.S. rights for CTV’s smash-hit Corner Gas franchise

CTV and Prairie Pants Distribution Inc. confirmed today that CORNER GAS ANIMATED Season 1 and 2 will become available for the first time in the U.S. as an IMDb Original. On October 15, all 24 episodes of CORNER GAS ANIMATED Season 1 and 2 will be joined exclusively in the U.S. on IMDb TV by Canada’s most-watched live-action comedy franchise of all time, CORNER GAS, including 107 episodes of the International Emmy Award-nominated, six-season live-action sitcom, and the 90-minute feature film CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE. IMDb TV is the free American streaming video service offering thousands of premium movies and TV shows for everyday TV viewing.

In Canada, the CORNER GAS franchise is exclusively available on Bell Media platforms including CTV Comedy Channel, Crave, and CTV Throwback.

The announcement comes as CTV confirms a third season of CORNER GAS ANIMATED, building on the momentum of CTV Comedy Channel’s record-breaking year. Season 3 of CORNER GAS ANIMATED features 11, all-new episodes featuring the beloved ensemble cast starring Brent Butt, Gabrielle Miller, Eric Peterson, Fred Ewanuick, Lorne Cardinal, Tara Spencer-Nairn, Nancy Robertson, and Corrine Koslo. The Comedy Network’s #1 Original Series, Corner Gas Animated, Returns Canada Day

As Brent Leroy announced today on CTV’s YOUR MORNING, Season 2 of CORNER GAS ANIMATED arrives on The Comedy Network this Canada Day, with a special guest star appearance from Michael J. Fox. The most-watched original series of all time on Comedy, CORNER GAS ANIMATED returns for Season 2 on Monday, July 1 with two back-to-back episodes beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The new 11-episode, half-hour season sees Brent (Brent Butt), Hank (Fred Ewanuick), and Emma (Corrine Koslo) compete to make viral videos; Karen (Tara Spencer-Nairn) and Davis (Lorne Cardinal) trying to scam the town at the annual Turkey Shoot; Wanda (Nancy Robertson) going power mad during Darts Night; Oscar (Eric Peterson) launching an eyebrow-raising website for the local paper; and Lacey (Gabrielle Miller) organizing a Bachelor auction and attracting high bids for Brent.

In the season premiere, “Dream Waiver,” (Monday, July 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT) Brent recruits Wanda to help him figure out recurring nightmares about being attacked by Michael J. Fox. Then, in an all-new episode at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT entitled “Drone and Dumber,” Brent gets a new drone that he uses to terrorize Oscar. Meanwhile, Wanda and Emma set out to test a turkey’s intelligence.

As previously announced, Season 2 of CORNER GAS ANIMATED features an all-star lineup of cameos from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Chris Hadfield, Russell Peters, Jann Arden, and EPIC MEALTIME’s Harley Morenstein.

Leading up to the two-episode premiere, viewers can spend their Canada Day in Dog River as Comedy delivers a catch-up marathon featuring every episode of Season 1, beginning at 8 a.m. ET and repeating at 1:30 p.m. ET on Monday, July 1.

The first season of CORNER GAS ANIMATED became a ratings hit after debuting in Spring 2018 with the most-watched series premiere in Comedy’s history and concluding the season as the most-watched series of the broadcast year on Comedy among total viewers and all key demos (A18-34, A18-49, and A25-54). TV Eh B Cs podcast 81 — Wine and McDonald’s with Corner Gas Animated’s Tara Spencer-Nairn

Note: Unfortunately, something weird happened in the downloading of the files for Tara and my conversation. The result is some crosstalk that is, at times, super annoying. I sincerely apologize to my listeners and Tara for this. 

Tara Spencer-Nairn returns as the deadpan police officer Karen Pelly in Corner Gas: Animated—airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The Comedy Network—a role she played in the Gemini-winning, No. 1 rated CTV sitcom Corner Gas, earning a Gemini Award for Best Ensemble Performance in 2007 and two Gemini nominations in 2004 and 2006.

A graduate of the Vancouver Film School, her big breakthrough came in 1999 when she was cast in the highly acclaimed New Waterford Girl. The film screened at the Sundance Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival and received seven Genie Award nominations including Best Picture.

Spencer-Nairn appeared in the recurring role of Sandy in CTV’s hit drama The Listener. She has appeared in numerous other television productions including The Outer Limits, The Strain, Murdoch Mysteries, Waking Up Wally: The Walter Gretzky Story, Flashpoint Saving Hope and Degrassi. Most recently she could seen in the third season of Syfy/Space hit series Killjoys as a recurring guest star.

Spencer-Nairn was born in Montreal, raised in Vancouver and now calls Toronto home. The youngest of three siblings, the actor spent 12 years as a competitive gymnast. She is married and the mother of two young sons.

Corner Gas Animated becomes the most-watched series premiere in the history of The Comedy Network

In advance of its second episode airing tonight, The Comedy Network confirmed today that the series premiere of CORNER GAS ANIMATED has become the highest-rated debut in The Comedy Network’s history. With just four days of preliminary playback data for the premiere, Numeris data confirms that 360,300 viewers so far have watched the April 2 debut episode “Bone Dry”.

With final playback data still to come, the premiere episode of CORNER GAS ANIMATED surpasses the series premiere of ANGER MANAGEMENT, which was previously the top-rated series debut on Comedy, dating back to 2012. In addition to setting a record for Comedy, CORNER GAS ANIMATED was the #1 entertainment specialty program on Monday, April 2 among all key demos (A18-34, A18-49, and A25-54).

In the all-new episode “Squatch Your Language,” (Monday, April 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT), Wanda (Nancy Robertson), Hank (Fred Ewanuick), and Lacey (Gabrielle Miller) attempt to trick Brent (Brent Butt) with a Sasquatch hoax. Davis (Lorne Cardinal) and Emma’s (Corrine Koslo)  obsession with the fantasy TV show THRONE STRIFE forces Karen (Tara Spencer-Nairn) and Oscar (Eric Peterson) to spend time together.

CORNER GAS ANIMATED is an inter-provincial co-production produced by Prairie Pantoons (BC), comprised of Brent Butt and David Storey from 335 Productions; and Moving Mountoons (ON), comprised of Virginia Thompson and Robert de Lint from Vérité Films, in association with Bell Media, Canada Media Fund, Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit, Ontario Computer Animation and Special Effects Tax Credit, Film Incentive BC Tax Credit, Digital Animation, Visual Effects and Post Production Tax Credit, Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit. Animation is produced by Prairie Pantoons, Moving Mountoons, and Smiley Guy Studios.
