Link: Ascension’s Canadian mission lifts off on CBC

For veteran Canadian actor Gil Bellows, Ascension reminded him of the science fiction literature he read growing up, especially the works of Isaac Asimov and Aldous Huxley.

The CBC series, which debuts Monday at 9 p.m., is about a 100-year space mission to find a new world to assure the survival of the human race.

Bellows, 47, who has appeared in a wide variety of TV shows (notably Ally McBeal) and movies (The Shawshank Redemption), plays the Earthbound son of the brilliant scientist who dreamt up the trillion-dollar enterprise. Continue reading.

Folks worried the recent shootings in Ottawa might lead to a severe crackdown on access to the Parliament buildings should rest easy,or so says Mark Critch.

The This Hour Has 22 Minutes satirist scrambled all over the Peace Tower and Centre Block this week shooting sketches for next Tuesday’s show. The entire cast and many in the crew were in Ottawa this week for a special taping of the series Thursday nightin the Commons theatre  on the Algonquin College campus. It marked the first time in the 22 year history of the series that it wasn’t before the usual studio crowd in Halifax. Continue reading.

The Canadian Screen Awards air March 1. Will you tune in? Don’t worry: you’re not alone (we’re assuming you said no). In 2014, the CSAs earned a mere 534,000 viewers, a dip of more than 30% from the year before, when 756,000 tuned in. Somewhat appropriately, the latter figure is what you would get if you combined the average yearly viewership of the Genie and Gemini awards, which were married in 2013 to create the Screenies. By contrast, last year’s Oscars were watched by 6.1 million Canadians. It’s a jarring disparity, but an unsurprising one — and not just because ours are called “the Canadian Screen Awards.” Continue reading.
