Production underway on original HGTV Canada series with Mike Holmes

From a media release:

When it comes to home renovation decisions, is it always ‘like father, like son’? HGTV Canada may have the answer. The network has proudly commissioned a brand-new, Canadian original series with Canada’s most trusted contractor, Mike Holmes, and his son Mike Holmes Jr. (MJ). Holmes and Holmes follows the unstoppable pair as they transform MJ’s modest bachelor bungalow into the perfect first home for MJ and his girlfriend Lisa.

Production is currently underway on the six, hour-long episodes and the series is scheduled to premiere this fall on HGTV Canada.

While Mike and MJ share a last name, a strong work ethic, and a desire to help others, they don’t always see eye to eye.  Their different approaches provide the foundation for unexpected moments of humour and drama – though they always vow to build it right. In addition to seeing the newest materials and building techniques in Holmes and Holmes, viewers will get a glimpse into the personal lives of the Holmes men.

Scott McGillivray goes On Vacation with Income Property

You know what you’re going to get when you tune in to Income Property. Not only will Scott McGillivray entertain as he renovates a couple’s home, but he educates folks on how to make the most money out of their investments. It’s a formula that’s worked for 10 seasons on HGTV and I’m frankly surprised it’s taken this long for a spinoff.

Debuting Wednesday with two back-to-back episodes, Income Property: On Vacation is exactly what it sounds like as McGillivray leaves the big city in his rear-view mirror to aid people in adding value to their vacation properties. In the first, McGillivray helps musician Justin Rutledge turn the lakeside shack on his in Prince Edward County land into a money-maker. It isn’t easy, but then anything McGillivray tackles rarely is. Wall-to-wall wood paneling, outdated appliances, a burgeoning mouse and raccoon population, black mould, expired avians and moisture throughout has Justin stressed, but the flop-haired contractor sees lots of potential.

After checking with local building codes, McGillivray—as he does with Income Property—presents Rutledge with two renovation options. I always get a kick out of McGillivray’s reactions to things as the demotion portion of the project gets underway and Wednesday’s debut of On Vacation is no exception. Let’s just say some questionable wiring leads to a funny scene in the old shower. Then, after days painting, rerouting plumbing, replacing rotting floors and intense renos, Rutledge’s new cabin is ready to hit the market, and bring in a tidy little profit for the singer-songwriter too.

Watching the team work to the proposed plan is fun and informative, but I constantly wonder why this series isn’t made up of hour-long episodes. Until that happens, I’ll have to be content with Income Property and this great spinoff, On Vacation.

Income Property: On Vacation airs Wednesdays at 10 and 10:30 p.m. ET on HGTV Canada.

20 Stars, 20 Room Renovations: Home to Win debuts April 24 on HGTV

From a media release:

This April, HGTV Canada launches Home to Win – its biggest, most interactive, multiplatform series yet. For the first time in the network’s history, 20 HGTV Canada stars including Mike Holmes, Bryan Baeumler, Scott McGillivray and Sarah Richardson come together under one roof to buy an average home and renovate it from top to bottom for one lucky Canadian. Starting today, Canadians can visit HomeToWin.ca to audition to be one of three Canadians who will compete to win this ultimate property. Throughout the series the house is revealed on-air and online, with HomeToWin.ca hosting a closer look after every episode. Hosted by ET Canada’s Sangita Patel, Home to Win premieres April 24 at 10pm ET/PT on HGTV Canada.

In the series premiere, HGTV Canada stars hunt for the ideal property to buy and renovate for one Canadian to call their own. In each episode, fan-favourite builders and designers work together to renovate and revamp the home room-by-room. With 20 major renovations to complete, there’s no shortage of work for this powerhouse cast and the results are extraordinary. Once the house is complete, three Canadians compete in heart-pounding challenges to see who will be victorious and claim the keys to the house.

By visiting HomeToWin.ca, Canadians can now submit an audition video for the chance to compete for the ultimate home, which will be awarded during the Home to Win finale on June 26. To participate in casting, Canadians must enter their email address on the site by June 5 at 11:59pm ET and follow the directions emailed to their inbox. The application is as easy as submitting a video, up to one minute in length, introducing themselves and answering the question, “what makes a house a home?”

Leading up to series launch, HomeToWin.ca transforms into a fully immersive digital experience where fans can explore design content, photo galleries and the interactive Design a Room feature. The Design a Room tool puts the audience in the driver’s seat as they design six different rooms inspired by the Home to Win house. Throughout the series, as the house is renovated on-air, Canadians get an in-depth look at every stunning detail through a captivating virtual tour with hotspots allowing them to shop the look. Canadians also get a taste of life on set through behind-the-scenes videos and can watch full episodes after they air.
