From a media release:

This January, Showcase unveils a schedule packed with new series, new seasons and new episodes of the season’s hottest dramas. Showcase travels through time and confronts the ultimate battle for human salvation in the new sci-fi drama 12 Monkeys. Season two of the hit series Helix explores a terrifying life or death struggle with a deadly new virus, and the critically acclaimed series Broadchurch returns to the schedule with a highly-guarded plot that fans will be speculating about. Also featuring new seasons of Royal Pains and Rizzoli & Isles, the shocking mid-season finale of Lost Girl, and cable premieres of Hollywood’s hottest hits, the winter schedule launches January 5, 2015.

Inspired by the classic blockbuster film, 12 Monkeys explores the provocative story of a time traveler from a decimated future. Using a dangerous and untested method of time travel, he journeys from 2043 to the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will annihilate the human race. Starring Aaron Stanford (Nikita, X-Men: The Last Stand), Amanda Schull (Suits, Pretty Little Liars), Kirk Acevedo (Dawn of Planet of the Apes, The Black Donnellys), Noah Bean (Nikita, Damages) and Canadian Emily Hampshire (Rookie Blue, Cosmopolis), 12 Monkeys premieres Friday, January 16 at 10pm ET/PT.

Showcase’s hit series Helix returns for a second season on Monday, January 19 at 10pm ET/PT. In the aftermath of the explosion that destroyed the Arctic Bio Systems base, season two of Helix follows the CDC team as they look into a deadly outbreak of a new disease on a Windjammer cruise ship. The investigation leads them to an island inhabited by a cult who hopes to create a utopian society. Steven Weber (Wings, Murder in the First, Dallas) joins the Helix cast as Brother Michael, the charismatic leader of the cult and a first class geneticist. Also new to the cast is Matt Long (Mad Men, Jack and Bobby) who appears as Dr. Kyle Sommer, the newest member of the CDC team.

Coming this January, the #1 specialty drama of last summer*, Broadchurch, returns. Starring David Tennant (Doctor Who, Gracepoint) as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Detective Sergeant Olivia Coleman (Hot Fuzz, The Iron Lady) as Detective Ellie Miller, season two explores how the town copes after the tragedy of Danny Latimer’s murder.

In addition to new series and new seasons, the first half of Lost Girl’s epic final season continues in January with new episodes, including the mid-season finale on Sunday, January 25, at 9pm ET/PT. Sexy succubus Bo’s story will wrap up later in 2015 when the second half of Lost Girl season five returns to Showcase.

Comments and queries for the week of Oct. 17

I loved Dark Angel, which has become a reference point for Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, but I need Bo and the Lost Girl gang. We need strong, independent women and sensitive, nurturing men. We need, in these dark political times, a glimmer of hope. We need the voices that say, “I make my own choices.” Please help the millions of fans who didn’t know they could vote. Bring Bo back!!–Karen

Thanks for your support for Lost Girl, but our poll wasn’t to bring the show back, just which Canadian one you’d go into a cage match for. Production has already wrapped on the final season.

Hey Max & Shred, I’m a big fan of your show! Love, your biggest fan.–Andrea

Thanks for the note, Andrea. You can reach the boys via @JonnyGrayy, @JakeGoodman9 or @maxandshred.

Will UpTV be showing the new season of Heartland? I am in the Miami area and so far I have just seen repeats.–Patty

Hey Patty, thanks for writing in. UpTV is a little behind the CBC here in Canada: Season 7 is currently being broadcast with no plans for Season 8 yet.

I am disappointed in how the interesting scripts that deal with horses of all kinds was taken over by people drama on Oct 12th. I loved Heartland up until now, but my family members agreed that we missed all the beautiful horses this time with their stories. Something was missing in this episode and it was the horses! The part that we love! We also love the people, but everyone was having stress and problems … too much for one episode of a family show.–Andree

Lost Girl to end after five seasons

It’s the end of the road for the Bo and her friends. Lost Girl lead Anna Silk broke the news Monday that the upcoming fifth season of Showcase’s sexy fantasy series will be its last.

“After five incredible seasons, we have decided that it’s time for Bo’s journey to come to an epic conclusion,” Silk said during a YouTube message to the show’s fans on Monday morning. “And while endings are always sad, this one comes with a tremendous gift.” The actress detailed Season 5 will be a super-sized 16 episodes that will be broken up into two parts.

“The massive popularity of Lost Girl is a testament to the inventive and hard-working team at Prodigy Pictures, the magnetic and talented cast and the most devoted and passionate fan base in Canadian television,” Barbara Williams, senior vice-president, of content for Shaw Media, said in a press release. “We’re so proud that Showcase has been the home to this landmark series and we look forward to sharing these final 16 episodes with the show’s fans.”

The news comes following the announcement that Lost Girl showrunner Emily Andras  had departed the series at the end of last season; now it’s up to new boss Michael Grassi to sail the ship into the sunset.

“Being a part of the Lost Girl family has truly been a gift,” Silk stated in the video. “And you guys have been here since Day 1.”

Lost Girl debuted in 2010, and focused on a succubus named Bo (Silk). Silk’s co-stars include Kris Holden-Ried, Richard Howland, Zoie Palmer and Ksenia Solo, who captured a Gemini Award for her role as Bo’s buddy Kenzi, who was killed off at the end of Season 4.
